XP Home and samba
I built a small embedded samba server based on Samba 3.0.26b. I tested
it locally with XP Pro running in a vmware VM.
All worked fine, so I shipped it.
Turns out the person using it is running XP Home. Here's her note:
I have restarted the computer and waited ten minutes and still nothing.
All that comes up is the mshome under the Microsoft Windows Network.
So it looks like all

Multiple mount instead of remount?
I'm having issues trying to remount any shares using samba.
Super Short version
mount -o remount /some_windows_share creates a duplicate mount instead
of properly remounting.
Full details...
I have many shares served off of NT4 boxes, mounted via samba on a
linux box (RHEL 4).
Since long dormant (>12 hour) shares from one server in particular
always have problems for a few seconds when

tdb/tdbutil.c:tdb_chainlock_with_timeout_internal (rev_2)
I've seen more and more occurrences of the following error (other people
have different password servers) on the web.
I submitted this question before, but it was never resolved. I've even
tried changing the underlying file system (from clustered vxfs to ext3)
and I still see the error.

Roaming profiles and case sensitivity
Hi,
Yesterday I found big problems concerning my roaming profiles. They seem
to work on some computers where they are always used, on some other the
did not load properly (i.e. a default profile was loaded instead).
After some debugging with userenv.log I found the very strange problem:
case sensitivity for ntuser.dat!:

mac osx charset on linux
Hey there,
After searching for quite some time I'm finally just going to ask the people
who know :)
I'm having trouble when listing the files on a samba share that's hosted on
a Mac OS X 10.4 server. The client is an Kubuntu Dapper Linux machine.
This happens only when using smbmount (smbfs) and not when I use Konqueror
with smb:// . The problem is that files with certain characters

how to view disk labels used by a user for his/her disk shares?
I have a samba pdc.
I would like to automatically assign at next logon a disk share with a
particular letter that is the same for a group of users (such as L:\).
How can I see with samba and/or windows tools what are currently the disk
labels used by this group of users so that I can choose accordingly?
And in general, is there any smb.conf or other config option that lets me
set a unique disk

doc files with attribut r for user
Hi,
i upgraded from Debian sarge to etch, so from samba 3.0.14a-3 to 3.0.24
When someone creates/modify a file the user attribut is set to r
(instead of rwx) so the next time a user opens the file is's on read only.
What can i do so that the file keeps the attribut rwx for the owner ?
Another question : the file has the rigthts : -r--rwx--- but although
the user is member of the group

Setting up common drive w/letter?
I want to configure samba to produce a common area (i.e. /home/shared) as
an assigned drive letter to all users. Thus, in addition to users
logging into the domain and having an H: drive for their personal account,
they will also get an S: drive (for example) for a common area.
How do I configure this in smb.conf?
Thanks.

Getting Owner of Files on Mounted Windows Share
Hello everyone,
I have an obscure issue that I have been so far unable to find the
answer to. I have successfully mounted a windows NTFS file share using
samba via the following command:
mount -t smbfs -o username=<USERNAME>,workgroup=<WORKGROUP>
//winserver/winpath /mnt/win
It mounts just fine but performing an ls -al command shows my user (or
"root") as the owner of all

Moving user accounts from a domain to another - and changing their logins
Hello everyone,
I have two domains, let's call them D1 and D2.
D1 is:
- heavily modified, cumbersome, Linux RH 7.3 based,
- samba 2.2 based,
- using the old LDAP samba schema,
- implementing Unix services/Windows logon SSO via the means of the LDAP
schema with Kerberos added in the picture.
D2 is:
- stock, clean Linux RHEL4 based,
- Samba 3.0.11 based,
- using the newer Samba SAM LDAP

Samba seems to pause for a long time and do nothing
Hi,
I have a problem with Samba (although it may be my hardware, I'm not sure).
I have a Linux i386 Samba server that I use for storing music, pictures
etc in a small home network which isn't that busy. When I stream music
to my laptop I get periods of silence which coincide with periods of
network inactivity. These can last up to 50 seconds and can be seen on
both the Linux and PC

Still unresolved: adding printers as a non admin domain user doesn't work
Hello list,
I use samba-3.0.10 from RHEL4, with an smbldap-tools backend (version 0.9.2a).
Everything works fine: domain logons work OK, I can join machines to the
domain, "unjoin" them, add users (from the samba server only though, but
that's not important), submit drivers for printers as a printer admin, etc.
The only thing that does NOT work is adding printers as a non admin

net ads join without kerberos
Hello,
I'm trying to join a samba server to a w2k domain.
Now I have removed all samba and kerberos software from the machine to reset
configuration.
Then I have executed "net ads testjoin" to see what happened (I have already
joined the machine to the domain).
It returned the following messages:

Export successively displayed graphics
Hello,
I am running R version 2.4.1 on Debian.
I am using some R functions which produce several graphics displayed
successively with an interactive prompt between each graph. For example,
the plot.varest (vars) function produces such output (one graph per time
series on which the VAR model is fitted). Plots on GARCH models also
produce such outputs.
Moreover, the frontend I am using for R

libflac doesn't find more than one metadata block
Hello, I'm currently doing a little music player using libflac and libao. What
I've currently done works as it should, but I have a problem where only one
metadata block is detected, even if there are more (it doesn't have the last
attribute set to true).
This is using flac 1.3.2 on Gentoo amd64.
The main code file is attached, it mainly follows the examples given with the

mkntpasswd
Hi!
I am currently follwoing this howto:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/guide/happy.html#ch6-nss02
and i am stuck with:
(..)You must compile the mkntpasswd tool and then install it into the
/var/lib/samba/sbin directory, as shown here(...)
Where can i get the mkntpasswd sources from? Or is there a rpm package for
