Samba as PDC and file server using ACLs
Hello sambers, i'm trying to configure a samba server (3.026a) as a PDC and as a file server using system's ACLs. 1. Where samba stores the users and groups domain information? Is in the /etc/passwd? 2. MUST i use winbind to successfully use ACLs? If the samba is the PDC, why should i have to use winbind? There is no problem to me to keep linux box user and groups accounts. 3.

3.0.24 -- Office read only issue, bizarre EAs and disappearing ACLs
Everyone, I have finally resolved the new heartburn 3.0.24 on Ubuntu Feisty was giving me and have stumbled upon some information that might help others out there. I was seeing problems with ACL entries getting mangled and disappearing, Excel making files read only and extended attributes doing bizarre things. The solution revolved around what appears to be a change in how ACLs are managed.

Copying EAs and ACLs
Hello, I am the guy behind the ext2/ext3 patches for Extended Attributes and ACLs, and I've recently been asked about ACL support in rsync by Eric. Upon investigating I found that you have an ACL patch against rsync-2.5.5 [1]. I also found some other postings to rsync@lists.samba.org concerning rsync and ACLs [3]. Are there any plans for finalizing an integrating that rsync ACL patch? I

ACLs as Standard Component in ext3?
To all: I was wondering if there was any talk regarding the possible inclusion into either kernel 2.4.x or 2.5.x of a general and standard ACL interface for file system security. I've used the ACL patch from acl.bestbits.at on ext3 & love it dearly except for the quota issues. Despite those issues I absolutely could not live without ACL's on large file servers with a few hundred or

Does Samba/Winbind not follow nested groups in AD?!?
Here's the situation: We have users who are members of groups and those groups are sometimes members of a 2nd level of groups. If a folder has permissions assigned to a 2nd level group, then the user can not access the share. Doing a "getent group | grep user | grep 2nd_level_group" also returns nothing. Samba seems to not be recognizing that a user is a member of a group under

ads_kinit_password failed: Preauthentication failed
Hi, I am have compiled samba 3.0.23b (MIT Kerberos 1.5.1) on Solaris 10. I am unable to join the ads domain. net ads testjoin returns the following output... 3.0.24 and disappearing ACL entries
I've been working at this for a few days now and I can't figure out what is broken. Google turns up similar issues from years back, but I hope this is a bug resurfacing. ACL entries are being deleted when files are saved. Here is an example: username: user1 group membership: Domain Users directory: /share/test file: test.xls getfacl /share # file: share # owner: DOMAIN+backupuser #

ACL fully functional?
I have compiled both my kernel (2.4.17) and samba (2.2.3a) to support ACL/EAs. It looks like it has gone well, but I get one message that worries me, but I don't know if it should or not. checking whether to support ACLs... checking for acl_get_file in -lacl... yes checking for ACL support... yes Using posix ACLs checking for acl_get_perm_np... no As you can see, the last line is where my

Samba Server Specifications
Has anyone posted an up to date hardware review lately? It seems clear that a RAID6 server with 300GB CHEETAH 15K.5 SAS drives will trump a P3 with a 30GB IDE drive, however, not everyone will spend the money required for the high end unit, I'm looking to build a new server & trying to make best use of funds (aren't we all). TIA

Archive bit oddities
Hello everyone, I've been scouring the web, reading documentation and experimenting with settings and I am having no luck in getting the behavior of the archive bit to be anywhere near expected. I have the file foo.txt in the personal folder that has the ADS group DOMAIN USERS with read/write capability (660). When the user jsmith (domain user) modifies the file, the archive bit is not

vfs_fruit: xattr imcompatible with netatalk
Hi. I'm testing samba 4.2.0 vfs_fruit on Fedora Server 22-alpha. I confirmed that ResourceFork and FinderInfo are compatible with Netatalk 3.1.7. However, EAs are incompatible. The character ":" in EA name is wrong. The EAs are not seen from clients. smb.conf: [test2] path = /export/test2 writable = yes vfs objects = catia fruit streams_xattr fruit:locking =

SAMBA + ACLs + QUOTAs + WINBIND = headache
Hello I'm trying to set up a samba server on linux that will have ACL capability and QUOTA control. I'm working on a customized 2.4.18 kernel patched for EAs and ACLs, and quotas I've also customized a 2.2.3a samba with acls, winbind, quotas... it's working fine from a pure unix point of vue, acl allow fine grained access control, quotas limit use of space, and so on with samba

More on the archive bit saga
Thanks to all that have helped so far. I now have a test server running on Ubuntu 6.06 and Samba 3.0.22. I also configured ACL and user_xattr on the filesystem running the shares. But now I have very strange behavior that I hope someone has a clue about. User smith can open two files (foo.txt and faa.txt) with Notepad, Wordpad and Microsoft Word. The behavior for all three is different:

2 questions: Linux filesystems that truly compare to NTFS / winbind causes Linux to lockup when connectivity to AD is lost
Hello samba gurus, I have a couple of questions regarding Linux file systems, and their ability to mimic NTFS, and the other question is regarding winbind and its uncanny ability to virtually lock up a samba AD member server once connectivity to the AD is lost. I apologize if anyone gets annoyed by this question. Environment: I am using samba 3.2 with XFS+ACL support joined as a AD domain member

hosting library (ie. PVCS) on Samba
Hello. I believe that I've done my due diligence in researching what info. is currently available on this issue. I have been jacking with this for days, & believe that I have tried all possible solutions. I am basically trying to move a [Merant] PVCS installation from an OS/2 file server to a SuSE/Samba file server. This installation consists of 'standard' source archives,

Samba 3 and Windows 2003 Active Directory
Hi all, Thanks is advance for any help you can offer - I just inherited a Samba file server in my new position, and am familiar with Samba, but no genius in it. The problem is that we need to upgrade our Windows 2003 domain, and our Samba server - version 3.0.10-1.4E won't connect to a Windows 2003 active directory. So, we have to leave a Windows 2000 DC running to authenticate to it.

Multiple problems: installing SWAT, no longer access to a restored (after deletion) share, ACL inheritance
I'm a job trainee, very new to Linux and Samba and was asked to set up a server based on OpenSUSE and Samba. The idea is not to make a production server but to investigate how and how well this works (the company is Windows exclusive at the moment) I got as far as properly installing Linux and Samba 3 with the help of the guides on the OpenSUSE website. But there are a few things that still
