Ubuntu 7.10 64 Bit Server Can't Write to Shares
I'm working on bringing up a new server and decided to give Ubuntu
7.10 64 bit a try. I installed it to a vmware instance along with
Samba to test it out before hand while waiting for all the hardware to
show up.
I made my smb.conf file similar to what I have on my Gentoo server
that is working fine. My goal is to have read only shares for most
users but with ability to write by admins.

[3.4.7/Ubuntu 10.04] Can modify but not create/delete
Hello
I notice I can modify existing files, but not create/delete. I also
notice that after saving a file I modified, Samba sets its access
rights to 744.
nobody.nogroup owns /var/www, with /var/www/. as 755
Logged on from XP as "nobody".
Here's /etc/samba/smb.conf:

XP is unable to write to samba shares - Valid users?
I have a client with a linux server with samba installed and I've created
users using the smbpasswd command (user1,user2,user3...) but when I go to
the XP machines they can see the different shares but are unable to write to
the folders or create additional folders based on their user1 and password.
I want them to validate themselves to the linux server so that if their
domain goes down they

youtube.com complains about old version on 64 bit ubuntu gutsy
I read on lwn.net that swfdec has support for watching youtube.com
videos. Good work! I have not been able to get the Adobe 32-bit mozilla
plugin working under 64-bit gutsy so I figured I'd give swfdec a go.
A quick search of the archives and bugzilla turns up nothing obviously
similar to my problem.

SOLVED - Re: login to ms access db very slow on samba 3.x
Hello everybody, Hi Jorge
We have found a solution to the problem I've posted earlier to this
mailing list; see below for the full history. There was a function in our
runtime application which would rebuild all links to external access
tables each time the application was started. To keep it short, we're
checking the presence of a certain value when starting (in the windows

Cannot access server error
Hi,
I'm having a peculiar problem with my Samba server and have not been able
to figure out how to solve it. I've had this server for a very long time,
but recently the main hard drive failed and I only kept backups of the user
files. I set the server back up with Debian Wheezy and Samba 3.6.6.
My problem is as follows:
I have 4 Unix users and groups:

Samba not honouring write/admin lists on shares
I'm running debian testing, so samba 3.05 atm. As of a few upgrades ago,
which i think coincided with a library restructure or somewhat samba is no
longer honouring read/write/admin lists on share definitions. Using the
below share as an example, previously all users could access the share with
read access, and those in the ntadmins group had write access. Since the
upgrade users can only

64 bit Linux/Ubuntu memory limit problem?
Dear list,
I've recently installed R on a 64 bit machine with 8 GB of RAM. I set this computer up as a dual-boot system, with windows XP 64 and Ubuntu 7.10. I downloaded the Linux 64 bit version of R and installed it.
I'm trying to run rather large Random forest models and was running into severe memory limitations with my old windows 32 bit machines.
When I run Random Forest models

idmap limit?
Hi,
we are running a file server as member server of a windows 2012 domain.
Now we are facing the problem, that some UIDs are not mapped to the user
names by the running winbindd process. This results in "nobody"
usernames for nfs shares mounted by other clients.
When doing an "ls -l" in the homes directory on the member server (file
server), the list looks like:

Backing up individual user home dirs using user privs.
Hey All,
After RTM, web page and searching the archives, I felt it worth a shot at
mailing the list with my query.
I am looking at using rsync and various third party GUI's (rsyncX, nasbackup)
to backup our departmental desktops to our nice new multi-terabyte
fileserver.
When we run rsync in daemon mode, it of course runs as nobody:nogroup and I am
aware of being able to set that to any

Hi,
no, that's my fault. I changed the UIDs and user names in my "ls -l" to
unpersonalized/example data for my mail and didn't think about putting
these values into the range. A better unpersonalized data example would
look like:
----------
drwx------ 43 DOM\user1 DOM\group 4096 Jan 10 08:00 user1
drwx------ 5 DOM\user2 DOM\group 4096 Jan 11 08:13 user2

OS X Clients Can't Create Sub-Directories
I'm running samba on a local linux server, with a bunch of shares. Over the last several years, this has worked perfectly in our heterogenous network of OS X and Windows. All my windows clients still work perfectly - my users can mount the samba shares and create, rename, move etc files and folders.
However, recently (starting yesterday) my OS X clients are unable to rename any sub
