smbd using 99.9% CPU with MS Office docs
I made a post a few weeks ago regarding this but was unable to find a
solution. This is the situation:
+ I'm attempting to upgrade from samba 3.0.23a (Fedora core package
3.0.23a-1.fc4.1) to the latest version compiled from Samba source.
+ When using the latest version (or 3.0.25b), Win clients can
authenticate & access shares fine, but attempting to open any kind of MS

Group mapping not working consistently
I'm trying to understand why my group mapping doesn't work in a
consistent fashion. I've studied "Important Samba-3.0.23 Change Notes" &
chapter 13 of TOSHARG but am still struggling. I'm on 3.0.23a-1.fc4.1
(Fedora Core 4) as a PDC, tdbsam backend.
'net groupmap list' gives this:

DNS problem?
I'm trying to join an XP SP2 PC called testpc to a test environment. Its
network settings are statically set. IP address is 10.8.3.209. I have a
PDC called gomer.mdah.state.ms.us w/ samba 3.0.26a and IP address is
10.8.3.37. On test PC I right click on my computer, properties, computer
name, change from workgroup WORKGROUP to domain ADAMSTEST.
But I get the error:

Samba unable to bind to LDAP server
I've spent the last several days trying to get Samba to bind to our
OpenDirectory server for user authentication with no success.
Whenever I try start Samba, it complains that the connection to the
LDAP server failed with invalid credentials. I am authenticating
other services against the LDAP server through NSS, so I am a bit at a
loss as to why Samba won't run. I'm also a bit at a

Samba 3.0.25b: smbd 99% CPU utilisation with opened MS Word doc
Hi I'm trying to upgrade from Samba 3.0.23c on FC4 to 3.0.25b from Samba
sources.
Everything appears to function correctly until an MS word document is
opened from a share - the file opens but the smbd process in question
rockets to 99%+ CPU, stays there & needs kill -9'ing to stop it. This
happens reliably.
I have an appropriate strace & a level 7 log but can't see anything

ACL/Excel file issue
Hi,
I've just upgraded an organisation from 3.0.23a to 3.0.25b on CentOS.
Everything went fine excpet they're having an issue with Excel files
going RO which perhaps is related to acls.
$ ls foo.xls
-r--rwxr--+ 1 mr.bogus staff 101376 Apr 8 12:59 08-04-04 foo.xls
and getfacl gives:

Winbind+nss working on one centOS 5.2 box but not another
Hi all,
I have an odd situation on my hands:
* Two CentOS 5.2 boxes both joined to an AD domain.
* Same samba version (3.0.28-1.el5_2.1) smb.conf, only the netbios names
differ
* Can enumerate users and groups using winbind -{u,g} on both.
* nss doesn't enumerate users & groups on one (same lib versions, same
conf file).

WERR_ACCESS_DENIED trying to set printer driver in samba-3.0.23d
I am having problems getting Pont and Print to work with
samba-3.0.23d, cups and ldap.
I used an XP box to install the windows drivers on the samba server by
adding the drivers in the "Printers and Faxes" section (using the
server properties tab) for the samba server. This part worked fine but
when I want to associate the driver to the printer I get an access

lazy samba server?
Hi,
I recently installed samba (3.0.28) on a linux box as a PDC. The networks
has about 20 windows xp professional and a few Linux (all Fedora 8).
Basically the server works OK but I have run into a few problems:
Initially windows roaming profile was not configured. At that time,
sometimes when a user tries to log on a windows machines, it would say
"server not found" and the user

It worked fine before (3weeks ago) and I think that problem

smbldap-useradd not creating machine accounts in correct fashion
Hi,
I have OpenLDAP working here generally without problems for a variety of
applications including the management of Samba. Functioning user
accounts can be created via 'smbldap-useradd' with the proper samba
attributes being added in LDAP, however...
Something odd is happening when I (or samba) tries to create a machine
account with 'smbldap-useradd -w test1$' - an entry is

"read error" when accessing a file on mounted samba share (Linux)
Hi all,
This is my first experience with network file sharing on Linux so I'm
looking for debugging advice. Server and client are both running FC5.
I've set up my home directory as a share on the server using
system-config-samba, everything seems fine. On the client side, as root:
# smbclient -L server.domain
Password:
Domain=[DOMAIN] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.23a-1.fc4.1]

Smba with Amanda backup --- permissions
Hi,
I am trying to create a Samba share on /media/winshare with the owner as
amandabackup instead of root. But as soon as I mount the Samba share on to
the mount point, the permissions for the owner get reverted back to root
instead of amandabackup.
Attaching a snapshot of how it looks like.

RPM reporting running two versions of Samba at the same time
I was trying to work through a PDC problem that I was having with
3.0.23a noted in bug 3964. I didn't know how to apply the offered
patch and my distro, FC4, has not offered an update yet to 3.0.23b so
I thought that I would revert to a previous version that is not
affected by this bug.
I forced an install of 3.0.23 samba, common, and client and now rpm
