Autentication against BDC first
Hi all, I have this question, I ve got a master LDAP server on a remote place and i want to install a PDC and a BDC and a slave ldap server in other place. Mi question is... may I force de WorkStations logging (read the information )against the BDC first than PDC, so the READ trafic goes to the Slave Ldap??? The problem is the network avoid READ traffic. In the Samba FAQ recomends that the:

Understanding Documentation about BDC in HowTo Collection
hi list&john, i read in the documention about BDCs: The domain SID has to be the same on the PDC and the BDC. In Samba versions pre-2.2.5, the domain SID was stored in the file |private/MACHINE.SID|. For all versions of Samba released since 2.2.5 the domain SID is stored in the file |private/secrets.tdb|. This file is unique to each server and cannot be copied from a PDC to a BDC; the BDC

PDC BDC hot failover
Hi there, I have a problem getting my Samba installation redundant. I installed a PDC and a BDC working with 2 LDAP servers. The problem is, when users are logged in and the BDC fails, the PDC does not take over the running sessions and vice versa. The clients have a hanging explorer and so on. When the failing server gets back online again, everything works, no lags anymore. Is it possible

Upgrading to Windows 2003 servers
We have samba 2.2.12 running on Solaris 9. Our PDC and BDC are windows 2000 servers running AD. Our windows admin is ready to promote a new windows 2003 R2 server to a DC. When she started DCPromo she received a warning message about older versions of windows and non-windows systems including SAMBA might not be able to communicate. Our configuration with SAMBA is not restrictive. Below is a

migrate old samba2.2.8 - smbpasswd to new samba3.0 - ldap - based
I'm just migrating a medium sambainstallation from old samba2.2.8 to new samba 3.0. The server is acting as PDC and there is no BDC. The new samba is based on LDAP and is already successfully tested. Now I need to transfer the whole old smbpasswd to the new ldap-style to convert users and machines with minimal effort. Especially I dont want to break the relations between the machines and

migrating to a new server with LDAP
Hello folks. I need to migrate from an old server still running Debian Woody to a new server running Dapper Drake. The big challenge is turning out to be who to plan out the Samba LDAP migration. The current server version is 3.0.20 compiled form source and the Dapper package is 3.0.22 and appears to include ldap support. So I don't think I need to compile or worry about version

Several samba / ldap for a pdc/bdc setup/transition questions
Greetings all, I've been researching migrating my NT4 PDC and BDC services to samba to get around the concerns we have here with NT4 no longer being patched when security holes are found. Details of my current NT4 domain... approx 300 computers, most of which can be migrated out soon either to be in no-domain or in an active directory domain approx 3000 user accounts, which need to be

samba3 upgrade misery
Greetings, all We've been running samba2 for far too long - I'd just never found the time to upgrade, and it wasn't a priority since it WORKED. Our little Solaris9/SPARC64 box happily served our few gigs of files to 20 users, and played the part of a PDC. Then I upgraded CUPS, and discovered samba2 doesn't like cups-1.2 libs, and figured it was as good an excuse to make the

"Wbinfo -u" get user account sucessfully but "getent passwd" fails
Hi everybody, I got a problem here with my Samba ADS member server. It functions as a file server and works for a long time. A few weeks ago our Active Directory domain controller failed due to power outage. We fixed it and now an employee reports that he could not use the samba file server any more. I restarted samba service and did the following testing: 1) getent passwd <thisUser>

Testing subnets with samba[Scanned]
OK before i start, this was something i was just testing while everyone was in training this afternoon. I have never had to deal with subnets before as we only have a few users, but decided to do a little bit of messing around to gain some experience. Basically we have one server (mandriva 2006) running samba, it has two 4 port ethernet cards in it but only utilitising one port from each card.

Two domains on one network?
I feel I should know the answer to this, but I wanted to verify. I have a bunch of Windows PC's running Win 2K Pro, on three subnetworks. Two of the subnets are served by Unix (FreeBSD) boxes running NATD, but all are joined to a domain being run on a Win 2K Pro server in another building on the campus. So far I haven't joined the two Unix boxes to the domain. I'd like to

[[ CD Server ]]
Hi, I'm building "cheap" print servers using old Pentium 133 (150, 200 or 233) with 32 (or 64) MB of RAM memory. Small HDs (2.1, 3.5, 4.2) GB and using Debian Sarge (3.1), with kernel 2.6, CUPS and Samba 3.0.10. The print part is ok, works fine and it is just information to the background. Now our IT team decided to put a CD and make the "cheap" print servers became
