Group membership
I am using Samba PDC with OpenLDAP2 and smbldap-tools. As part of my
logon.bat, I call a script called ifmember.exe. This script can list out the
groups a user is a member of. It is reporting that my root user is a member
of the group 'engr.' I don't know if this is a bug with ifmember.exe or if
it's an issue in Samba or in LDAP. Here is some relevant data:

Valid Users in Samba 3
All -
I'm having a problem with the "valid users" directive working. I have an Accounting share that only the Accounting department should have access to. However, I am unable to lock the directory down so only they can access it. I am running samba-3.0.0-2 from an RPM on RedHat 9.0. Below are details of my trials. This is a pretty urgent need, please. Thank you!

UID GID mapping with sssd no longer supported on samba 4.7.4?
I'm struggling with a permission problem on a samba server that is
configured to resolve unix uids and gids via nss using sssd. This mostly
works. The windows side sees files as being owned by SID=S-1-22-<unix
uid of user> and the group is SID=S-1-22-<unix gid of group>
This all works fine for files owned by the windows user, or files that
are world readable, but fails for

Seeking help with Samba shares & OPLOCKS & Quickbooks databases
I thought I had things figured out, but guess not. I have multi-user
Quickbooks databases that functioned fine on a Novell server but are
behaving badly on a Samba share. I have created a separate share for the
Quickbook databases, users are running Win XP Pro, latest patches, and the
Quickbooks application installed on the desktop. It is a multiuser version.
Server is RedHat ES 3, Samba

Anonymous rsync server on LAN
I'm trying to set up a back-up file server (192.168.123.3) that will
rsync files from the main production file server (192.168.123.4). The
production file server is set up to run rsync --daemon, and I know it
is doing so because on my backup server I can execute
rsync 192.168.123.4::
and get the list of modules as follows:

hi everybody
we have been reading through the archives for quite some time now, and
could not find a solution to our problem. please excuse if we overlooked
something and our question was already answered elsewhere...
we have Samba version 3.0.14a-Debian running on (you guessed it) debian
with kernel 2.6.8-2-386.
ever since our migration from samba 2.x we have speed issues with an ms

Non-determinism
Is anyone else concerned about the fact that rsync doesn't guarantee
to produce identical file copies on the the target machine?
Don't get me wrong in sounding critical because I think that rsync is
a great example of how software should be written. (I often make the
observation, as I learn more about Linux, and inevitably find myself

Printing permissions problem
OK, I just took my first non-root user live on my Samba 3.0.7 system.
Printing is via cups, with drivers stored in the print$ share. This user is
a local power user. She can add printers, or root can add them. Root can
also print from them. If this user tries to print anything (a test page
even) she gets a non-verbose error that looks like a permissions error. She
can view the queues

oplocks, QuickBooks (Samba 3)
Hi there,
Can somebody please explain to me why Samba 3 requires 'oplocks = no' on
shares for programs like Quickbooks to operate properly with multiple
users, where Samba 2 didn't?
Without this option, Quickbooks will complain about file corruption when
a second user tries to open a file.
This option, however, makes the particular share that the option is
present in _very_ slow

Group mapping, among other problems
Hopefully I can write this out so someone understands it.
We are currently running a number of Solaris servers, to which windows
computers need to connect. Currently they connect via NFS using
hummingbird's NFS client. This requires them to have a separate unix
account along with their windows account.
Our idea is to implement samba 3.0.0 to eliminate that NFS client.

MS Word unable to sense file opening by other users
Thank you for answering. I am testing Samba 3.0.1Pre1 on RH9 . MS Word 97 keeps opening already opened files without sending any warning as it would normally do when accessing W2K servers. Same program , same files behave differently with Samba and W2K. However, I found that Powerpoint is nevertheless able to sense correctly the situation by always giving such warnings - " test.ppt is

Common MS Office and samba file share issue
Hi all,
There are many posts on many lists about this issue but no definitive
answers.
For me the issue came up with a new server running CentOS 5 + samba
3.0.35c + openldap.
The recent postings I've seen always seem to have either RHEL 5 or
CentOS 5 in common with the provided 2.6.18 kernel.
The issue is .doc or .xls files saving and then producing an error about
not being able to

Joining Samba 3.0.2 vanilla to ADS
I've been looking at several posts for weeks now and finally concluded
through testing how to install Samba 3.X into the Windows Active Directory
environment. I was completely under the impression that you needed to load
Kerbos/ LDAP and a bunch of other stuff. In our case our ADS is running in
native mode and I was able to join the domain quite easily. I've tested
authentications and

MS Office crashes on files from samba 2.2.3a Server
Hi,
I use a RH7.2++ samba-2.2.3a-6, kernel-2.4.9-7 PDC configured server. If
I open a MS Office file (word/excel), the changes can be saved, but
closing the application crashes it. I'v read about oplock problems on
this list and in the net; the only solution was to update to 2.2.5 and
may be to RH 7.3++.
I set oplocks = no, level2 oplocks = no (GLOBAL), hoping that would help

MS Access and RAID
Hi,
We have been having a few problems with a M$ Access DB held on a Samba server
Samba version: samba-2.2.4-2N1
We have rebuilt a new server, and transferred the database over to the new
box, along with word/excel docs etc. Everything is working fine, except the
access database, which is running very very slowly (can be over a minute to
open a record).
Details are a little sketchy, but it

winbind lookup errors
Hello Samba folks,
I have recently begun seeing some disturbing behavior from winbind.
Winbind will fail to look up users and groups. Examples:
The machine is configured to use winbind as a nss module.
"getent passwd <username>" will yield no results.
"wbinfo -n <username>" will yield "Could not lookup name <username>"
"wbinfo -g"

Samba & LPRng: Printer Status in Windows
I know this question has been answered here a while back, but I have not been able to find the mailing with the posts on it.

I have a redhat server that I am using as a file/print server for student use. I am using samba to help the users with Windows. The problem I have is that when using printing a user can submit a print job, and it prints fine, but cannot see the
