I've discovered that, on my SuSE 10.0, 10.1 and 10.2 PCs, samba accesses my DNS servers on internet to resolve the ip address before looking locally. This has proved no problem for me until my ISP decided to change the way it handled DNS "errors" (ie it stopped telling us customers when a lookup failed). Now samba doesn't work on my LAN unless I explicitly give it ip addresses.

I installed samba on a PC running SuSE 10.2, using the version from the SuSE 10.2 repository (3.0.23). All very nice, except smbmount is missing. As I understand it, this would seem to be because the version offered had not been compiled with the --with-smbmount option. Is my interpretation correct? And if so, how can I fix things? Do I have to download the source and do my own compilation

Hi all, I have recently changed from Suse 10.0 to openSuse 10.2 on my desktop PC, and I am having problems running the latest version of Papyrus (12.56) a Windows word-processor. I can run an older version of Papyrus without any trouble. On the same machine I can also boot into my Suse 10.0 setup and Papyrus 12.56 runs fine in that. To those of you who may be interested, to get SATA drives to work on this motherboard with Xen 3.3.1 (compiled from source) you need to set SATA to RAID mode in the BIOS, not the default IDE mode. So I can only assume that the 2.6.18.8 kernel has a problem with the VIA SATA in IDE mode, and can''t recognise it, even though the host OS (Ubuntu 8.04LTS, in my case) has no problems with it.

I am reading in a large file of data (I believe it is in ASCII format).
