how to access public shares without password even when security = user
Hello everyone, I have always thought that with security = user , a login window will pop-up and you must insert credentials to access the shares of a samba server. Yet here I am sitting in front of a QNAP system file server, running Samba 3.5.2. When I type in the address of the samba server, I am presented with the top level shares (public or not). No login window pops up.. Then if I try to

can't connect to an Eaton Powerware 9155 over a usb-serial adapter
hello everyone, I've been testing the NUT solution as opposed to the undocumented LanSafe application to control my Eaton UPS. I am on a Slackware 13.37 system with a 2.6.37.6 kernel. NUT version is 2.4.3 . I installed the tarball by compiling it directly on my system (as a slackbuild package). The UPS is an Eaton Powerware 9155, but I don't know how to obtain the manufacturing date. The

Really small Linux and NAS
I have a really nice, old Libretto 110. Only 64Mb memory. I want to put Linux on it and have a network monitoring system and a traveling NAS. But all of the NASs have seemed to have grown beyond their original 64Mb size (FreeNAS now needs 128Mb). Only thing I have found is: http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS8289526009.html Talking about Unbutu 6.0 and the 'Server' install that can

sambaUserWorkstations (with LDAP) not working with Groups of Computers ?
Hi, I'm trying to use the sambaUserWorkstations option to allow users to log on certain computers only. This option looks great... In fact it looks now a lot better than the 'ldap filter' one than was deprecated with samba 3.0.20... The fact is, if the sambaUserWorkstations option works well with machine names, it doesn't seem to work when specifying groups of machines.

samba authenticates only against the primary group of a user?
Hello everyone! I seem to be have a bit of a problem setting up a few network folders for a my office on a Qnap storage device running Samba -v3.5.2. So I ask: when the 'write list' of a share contains ONLY groups, and a user tries to log on to that share, then samba authenticates against the primary group only of that user only?? Here is the example that fails: -the user is

streams_xattr & streams_depot
A couple of questions about the above: 1. In their respective man pages, both refer to "NTFS alternate data streams?, however they are not limited to just NTFS ADS are they? Other file systems may also use ADS (such as Mac OS?s various fs) 2. What is the essential differences and similarities between the two? From the man pages it appears that: - xattr has default prefix (which can be

How to shutdown macOS / mac OSX from Network UPS Tools client - NUT
Hi, I’ve posted my question on Superuser.com but not had any replies in 2 weeks, so I guess no-one there knows anything about NUT. https://superuser.com/questions/1441153/how-to-shutdown-macos-mac-osx-from-network-ups-tools-client-nut <https://superuser.com/questions/1441153/how-to-shutdown-macos-mac-osx-from-network-ups-tools-client-nut> I’m looking for help in shutting down my iMac on

please help with estimation of true correlations and reli abilities
Jens I'm not sure what you intend by "predefined assumptions". 1. If you merely want to conduct an exploratory rather than confirmatory analysis for the relevant paths, there are ways within SEM to do this. (In this case you could use John Fox's SEM package). 2. If you do not wish to assume multivariate normality, then you may use a variety of alternative (to maximum likelihood)

Windows file permission abilities?
I'm potentially about to deploy a samba 3.0.11 file server on RHEL 3.4 or perhaps 4.0 and before i do i'm wondering if it can do a couple things. I read the howto and googled but didn't find exactly what i was looking for. Most importantly i'm wondering if it can implement the create dir/append to file permissions. My client wants users to be able to create files on the server

Complex abilities and scoping of records
I have the following scenario. Users have various levels of ability. They can only view and edit their own records (their profile). Their managers can only view and edit their employees records. The regional managers can view and edit only the people in their regions and the corporate headquarters can view and edit all records. There are multiple regions so somebody can be the manager of the

Question on folder sync with "directory name translation"
I should describe the problem more in details, but I believe this is off topic for this list. The FolderA is named "Musica" (in Italian) because.. I like it that way.. and is in my home folder. PC # /home/gionata/Musica FolderB MUST be named "music", in my home folder on the NFS filesystem, NAS # /volume1/homes/gionata/music *because the synology media parse service only
