Trying to boot a SSD of 500GB
Hi, I have a custom linux system that runs off a FAT32 usb flash disk. I use syslinux to make it bootable and load the kernel. I'm trying to boot now from a SSD SATA disk (500GB) but it's not working and I can't figure out why. BIOS show that no bootable disk were found. What I already tried (linux fdisk): 1- Creating a new DOS partition table on the SSD, a FAT32 (type b), and

deleted fat32, added linux, formated ext3 ... mount detects as fat and I get FS-panic
Hi... I decided to delete my fat32 partition (sda1, with win2k on it). I did that with fdisk and added a linux partition, then formated it with "mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sda1" ... Everything seemed to work fine... I can even mount it with "mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt" ... but there seem to be some fat32 rubbish left because when I do "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt" it seems to

SIze of reformatted USB drive
I just reformatted an 8Gb USB drive as ext3. While as FAT32, it was reported as having well over 7Gb free (did not note the exact capacity). I reformatted with mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1 Now it is reported (oh, this is with properties in Nautilus) as having 6.8Gb capacity (free space actually). Does this makes sense that ext3 has less available space than fat32?

Can create files from share but only delete as root
Fellow List Members: After upgrading our server to RHEL 6 from RHEL 5, I discovered that our linux clients could create files on the share but not delete them unless they first switch to root (su -). This is very odd to me since the share in question is mounted with the non-root user's credentials. The fstab entry is as follows: //192.168.1.2/officefiles /mnt/officefiles cifs

Reformatting a USB drive
I have a USB drive that has been formatted as NTFS. Can I reformat it? I have identified these properties about it /dev/sda1 /media/Extrnl_Bkup Not sure what to do next since the GUI will not mount a NTFS disk (expected). Todd -- Ariste Software 2200 D Street Ext Petaluma, CA 94952 (707) 773-4523

C7 + UEFI + GPT + RAID1
Hi list, I'm new with UEFI and GPT. For several years I've used MBR partition table. I've installed my system on software raid1 (mdadm) using md0(sda1,sdb1) for swap, md1(sda2, sdb2) for /, md2 (sda3,sdb3) for /home. From several how-to concerning raid1 installation, I must put each partition on a different md devices. I've asked times ago if it's more correct create the

EXTLINUX: Reading the extlinux.conf but can't find Kernel
Hi Folks, OK - I'm not entirely new to Linux but I'm certainly not great on the boot process. What I'm trying to achieve is to boot from an external USB HDD (not flash drive) using EXTLINUX. I've run an installation against the disk using a VM. The disk was partitioned as follows: /dev/sda1 = /boot (bootable) /dev/sda2 =/swap /dev/sda3=/ (i.e. root) /dev/sda4=/dos sda1 and 3

Syslinux & usb booting
Hi It looks to me there's some issues in the Linux implementation of syslinux (root ver, I don't have mtools). When I used "syslinux -sf /dev/sda1", the stick was not bootable, it showed a black screen when booted, with a ";" appearing when I pressed a button. The partition was marked active & bootable. And it was the only partition, and primary. Then I did the

question about extlinux.conf on flashstick with ext2
Hi , I ve tested the pclinux minime on usb 1Gb and later 8Gb, with fat32 and syslinux boot , works splendid in Ram , and persistant saves on stick.. Now i want to try extlinux-boot with ext2 or 3 on the usb. weird Windows profile creation
It seems weird. On 75% of my machines, it creates accounts as: c:\documents and settings\username on 25% of the machines, it creates them as: c:\docments and settings\username.DOMAINNAME These are fresh machines, so it's unclear to me where this behavior stems from. We're not using roaming profiles. Does anyone have any idea as to why this happens? thanks Chris

Ghosting Linux Partitions.
I was thinking of putting a slightly bigger HD on my Linux server and would like to know the easiest way. I know that ghost works well on FAT32 partitions, but does it work on Ext3 partitions too? Id rather not reinstall if I don't have to, so any and all suggestions are appreciated. TIA Kev

help
High all, In WinXP, I have created file "image.iso" using mkisofs, but unable to postprocess with the "isohybrid". I worked as follows: cd F:\syslinux-4.05\utils F:\syslinux-4.05\utils> isohybrid F:\image.iso and received >'isohybrid' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. What next? Thanks in advance.

Moving wine's C: drive to another file system
I have a question regarding moving Wine's C:/ drive to another file system. My hard drive is currently partitioned into 3 primaries. I have a NTFS partition that Windows is on, a Ext4 with Ubuntu, and a third, larger, FAT32 partition that I use to hold cross-OS data (music, pictures, documents ect). I have had infinite difficulty getting wine to run apps that I installed (through wine) to my

Really dumb question
Just got dovecot running inside MEPIS 3.3.2 SOHO (debian). I am impressed. It works really well and I am planning to move my mail away from my Win server and access the mail from dovecot using imap. I have copied some folders from my existing Outlook mail system into the imap mail server without any problems....so here is the dumb question: where are the mail files/folders stored on the MEPIS
