Can't see samba drives in host Linux from VMWare guest Windows

Screensaver flashing instead of normal function
I rebooted my machine this morning and now instead of running normally, my
GLMatrix screen saver flashes as it repaints the screen, more and more
noticeably as the screen fills up with glyphs. I didn't change ANYTHING and
this was not happening before the boot.
Anyone have any ideas why this might be?
Thanks.

Missing samba binaries
I went to enable samba on my home machine, which has a largely plain vanilla
install of CentOS 4.4 Plus, and the smbd and nmbd files are missing. As you
may know, this makes it rather difficult to run samba. For some reason, the
winbindd binary is present, and rpm reports:
samba-common-3.0.10-1.4E.11
samba-client-3.0.10-1.4E.11
as present. So how do I retrieve the missing samba binaries/ Do

Stumped: kernel 2.6.18-8 source doesn't build???
I installed the kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.src.rpm today and went to build
it, but it fails with this error:
$ rpmbuild -bp --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec
Building target platforms: x86_64
Building for target x86_64
error: Failed build dependencies:
unifdef is needed by kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.x86_64
I double checked and this appears to be the latest kernel source rpm
on centos/5.0/os/SRPMS.

Good things about CentOS 5; problem with flash in seamonkey
I'd like to point out that overall I am quite pleased with CentOS 5,
although I am having more fun with it than I did with 4.4 and I knew
less about CentOS then (duh).
Most things seem to work fine, including a relatively smooth
installation from the DVD image I downloaded, although the number of
screensavers I can see (and this could be related to the ATI/dual head
problem) is pathetically

CentOS 5 dual head doesn't work
I just bit the bullet and installed CentOS 5 on my work desktop, and
although I have two monitors and a card that supports them, I cannot
get the display configuration to work with both as a continuous
(spanning) desktop. I have tried using the correct (autodetected)
monitor type (digital and analog), a generic LCD with 1280x1024,
nothing works. Every time I set the configuration, the X server

Looking for a good disk exerciser
I recently added a Seagate 400Gb SATA drive to my system, and it has been
behaving strangely since I put it in. for one thing, the BIOS S.M.A.R.T.
came up with a warning the last time I booted with it enabled, saying that I
should backup my data and replace the disk (!).
I still have not made any irreversible data transfers to this drive, and I
have some time yet to take it back, but I'd

Samba config for Windows on VMWare
I know this is a little off topic (not as usual, dammit!), but I figure
at least one of y'all can handle this one.
I have tried to configure my CentOS4.4 Plus desktop for samba sharing
with the VMWare Windows that runs on it. However, no matter what I've
done so far, I can't get the Windows to recognize this machine as a
legitimate network destination.
Here's my samba

Trouble connecting to CentOS 5.0 host sound device from Windows guest on VMWare Workstation 5.5.4
I am running VMWare Workstation 5.5.4 on a CentOS 5.0 host
(2.6.18-8.1.4 kernel) and I have been haiving some trouble with my
sound device on the Guest Windows XP SP2 OS. When I first had trouble
under CentOS 4.4, WS 5.5.3, it was usually when the sound device on
the host was actually busy. However, now I can't use the sound device
at all - I keep getting this error: "Failed to open sound

Strange behavior in X, esp. VMWare Windows
Last Thursday, for some reason (possibly a power failure), my work
desktop had a different video configuration than when I left Wednesday
evening. I have two 17" flat panels configured as a two-head wide
(side-by-side) single display. When I arrived on Thu, I had two
individual desktops instead, the resolution was down to 800x600, and
so on. The monitor type had been reset to generic

Another CentOS 5 oddity: reboot and the X server fails to come up
I had to reboot my work machine today, and it came up in text mode
(!). I did an init 5, but that had no effect (wrong command?). I
killed the three gdm processes, and voila, X server mode.
Where do I look to find out what is not right here?
Thanks.

Good things about CentOS 5; problem with flash in seamonkey [SOLVED]
For the interest of all concerned:
The 32-bit version of Seamonkey works perfectly with the flash plugin.
I haven't tested others yet, including the acrobat reader, but I have
much more confidence that problems encountered there will be easily
soluble.
Thanks to all who contributed, especially Jim Perrin, who gave me the
critical clue as to what was not working.

MPlayer doesn't seem to work right in CentOS 5

Screensavers for CentOS 5.0
Probably a stupid question, but here goes anyway.
Are there any other screensavers available besides the four supplied
in the release? Or is there a way to use the ones that came with 4.4
in 5.0?....
Thanks.

OT? Alt-tab flashes differently between work and home
This may be off topic, but I'm not sure where to go - been to Gnome
help and google - nada (wrong search?).
I have CentOS 5 on both my work and home machines, with Gnome 2.16.0
(default, straight out of the box, so to speak). At work I have two
17" FP monitors on an ATI FireGL V3400, at home I have one 19" CRT on
an nVidia GeForce7100gs.
When I use alt-tab to switch windows at

Page cache flushing algorithm question
I have been studying this for the last several days, and the one thing that
leaps out at me is that the page cache always flushes one page at a time.
Always.
To some extent, there is justification for this - what has to happen for
each page that gets flushed depends in part on what file system is being
written to and whether or not there is a function for that file system to
handle the pages.

Need a driver for a Canon MP160 printer
As usual, virtually every printer on the market comes with Windows, and
sometimes Mac OS, drivers for the printers, but they almost never come with
Unix/Linux drivers. This time Google was not my friend. I got a pointer to
a drivr, dommon<something>mp160.ppd that doesn't appear to exist anywhere on
the web, and there are two driver files from Canon Asia that want a lot of
