deleting a file
Has anyone observed this behavior when deleting a file? I had a user map a Samba share to his WIN2K machine and use the Windows Explorer delete function to delete a rather large file (600M). Windows prompted him in the usual manner: 'Are you sure you want to delete this file?' (By the way it was the actual "delete" warning, not the recycle bin warning.) In the Explorer window,

Upgrade 3.0.24-3.fc5 to 3.0.24-4.fc5 Anomaly
As part of our deployment of FC updates we have upgraded our office server from 3.0.24-3 to 3.0.24.4. We got some strange results. Shares that have the same name as the users home directory and/or the same name as their users id became inaccessible. For example, my user id is kens, my home directory is in /home/kens and there was a share of it called kens. There is also a common share

read-only share still requires domain user authentication?
Hi, I have an issue with how I have setup one of my shares. I have a file system on one of my boxes that sync's to a cygwin repository on the net. I eventually will have my internal windows workstations do a weekly (or some frequency) sync to my internal cygwin repository. When at a workstation I often do this cygwin sync by hand to make sure the user has the latest cygwin files. When I run

Valid Users setting causing crash
Hey list, Having a strange issue on a new File server. This system is running the 64-bit version of Fedora 5 running kernel 2.6.20-1.2300.fc5 and version 3.0.24-1.fc5 of Samba. This system is functioning as a backup to a primary system that is configured the same way. Same OS, hardware, etc. After moving data over and setting up the users and groups, I moved over the smb.conf file as well. In

2.2.8a and printers
I recent upgraded to 2.2.8, which went fine. When I checked smbclient -L firewall, I saw I Lost my printer share. I am using CUPS v1.1.3 for printing. When I went back to 2.2.7a it reappeared. 2 questions: 1> Why did it do this? I ./configured it --enable-cups- --with-pam_(smb) 2> Is there and advantage of upgrading such a small step? Or are there a big enough issues to warrant this

Samba with NFS
We're having a problem with a combination of NFS and Samba that I'm hoping someone here has seen before and knows the solution for. In this case, the Samba server is an NFS client, and the Samba share is actually an NFS mount to an NFS server. The problem we see is when a Windows client tries to open a file on the Samba share, the application hangs, and eventually comes back saying

Name mangling problem
Hello all, I am exporting my linux home directory to my XP machine using samba-3.0.24-4.fc5. Some of the files in my mp3 subdirectory are showing up mangled. When I try to set mangled names = no on my share, then the files stop being mangled, but the files that were mangled before are no longer accessible. The mangling is inconvenient because what will often happen is that one or two of the

Replication: long detalys
Hello everybody, I am running dovecot 2.1.7 on Debian Wheezy on two servers with replication set up, MTA is postfix. The idea is to have a redundant mail system so that when one server fails, users can continue using the other server (failover of POP/IMAP through DNS redirection). Servers are called srv06 and srv07: Below is the dovecot config, both servers have identical config, only the

Samba, CUPS and Windows Printer Queue
I've had a Samba 3.0.2 Print Server running for nearly 7 months now without too much of a hitch on RedHat Enterprise "ES" 3.0. Late last week, RedHat issued an Errata that moved Samba from the 3.0.2 base to the 3.0.4 base. So when I did the "up2date" this weekend as part of my normal maintenance, this server was updated and everything appeared to be fine. Things are

Setup Windows XP to print to CUPS printer on FC5
I am quite sure this question has been asked before but I can't find anything in the archive and Google does not turn up anything useful. I have Fedora Core 5 with an HP LaserJet 5L printer connected to the LPT port. I also have the CUPS printer queue shared. I am trying to setup up a Windows XP laptop with wlan on my home network to be able to print to that printer. I have little
