After a hiccup or two with Samba not wanting to restart, I opted to look for a pid/lock file and found none. Tried to correct by restarting the server and had no success with samba restarting. There are no errors in smbd.log I did apt-get upgrade. No help I did apt-get remove samba, samba and swat went away.
