Have I been hacked?
I'm noticing something strange on two of my machines.. They're both
4.7-RELEASE-p3 i386 and they've both been up 150 days without any
problems...
/var/log/messages on each system contains only:
Jun 9 12:00:01 in newsyslog[60291]: logfile turned over
dmesg's output is truncated.. it periodically changes, but currently
it reads:
ite.net host=6532251hfc207.tampabay.rr.com

[nbdkit PATCH] log: Allow user option of appending to log
Always truncating a log can wipe out useful history. Add an
option to change this.
Signed-off-by: Eric Blake <eblake@redhat.com>

Hmm - logappend=false enables appending. Maybe we need a common
utility function for parsing bool values (parse 0 and case-insensitive
"off" or "false" as off, all others as true, or even report values
that can't be parsed reasonably)

root prexec/postexec & login scripts
I have a perl script that I'd like to use to create windows 9x login
scripts at login time but I cannot get the process to work right. I have
RedHat 7.3 (actually the k12ltsp v2.1.0 which is a modified RH7.3) set
up as a domain controller which is working well. Manually created login
scripts run fine on the workstations at login. I'm using a netlogon
script I found at

Desperate! passwd sync problem...please help!
Hello,
I am running Samba 2.2.3a-6 on a Debian(testing) machine.
It is running as a PDC for 15 Win2K(SP2/3) systems. Everything runs
beautifully except the users cannot change their passwds. When a user
CTRL-ALT-DEL and change passwd they ultimately get a messages stating that
the old passwd is incorrect....
If I log into a shell as a user on the system and invoke smbpasswd, It

9.2-BETA2 - Problem with newsyslog
Hello,
My entry for newsyslog in /etc/crontab is:
0 * * * * root newsyslog -t \%Y-\%m-\%d_\%H:\%M
And I get:
newsyslog: Could not convert time string to time value: No such file or
directory
I try to use the newsyslog from head to to avail. This solution was
working a month ago (see Revision 248776)
My file system is zfs version 28.

[nbdkit PATCH 0/2] RFC: tweak error handling, add log filter
Here's what I'm currently playing with; I'm not ready to commit
anything until I rebase my FUA work on top of this, as I only
want to break filter ABI once between releases.

Vim-R-Plugin issue : Python interface must be enabled to run Vim-R-Plugin
I am trying to get the
Vim-R-Plugin<http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=2628> to
work with gvim and R on Windows 7.
When I open a .R file in VIM, it complains and says ""Python interface must
be enabled to run Vim-R-Plugin." I have installed pywin32 for python 2.7,
and added the following 4 lines to my _vimrc per the instructions

Logserver recommendations
Hi
I am using rsyslog to get logs to a central box and they are stored in the
format of
/<hostname>/<year>/<month>/<day>/<logfilename>
I need a solution that can trawl through these directories and pick up
exceptions like failed logons and sudo usage that sort of thing.
Has anyone got any clues as to what might help to achieve this, i am looking
into logsurfer but

/var partition overflow (due to spyware?) in FreeBSD default install
All:
I'm posting this to FreeBSD-security (rather than FreeBSD-net) because
the problems I'm seeing appear to have been caused by spyware, and
because they constitute a possible avenue for denial of service on
FreeBSD machines with default installs of the operating system.
Several of the FreeBSD machines on our network began to act strangely
during the past week. Some have started to

time segments intersection
Hi all,
Please, how could I calculate the time that two time segments has in
common? Is there any function to perform this calculation?
For instance, given four POSIXlt objects...
endPeriod<-as.POSIXlt("2008-09-30")
startPeriod<-as.POSIXlt("2007-10-01")
endProject<-as.POSIXlt("2007-05-31")
startProject<-as.POSIXlt("2006-12-01")

[nbdkit PATCH 0/8] fd leak safety
There's enough here to need a review; some of it probably needs
backporting to stable-1.12.
This probably breaks tests on Haiku or other platforms that have not
been as on-the-ball about atomic CLOEXEC; feel free to report issues
that arise, and I'll help come up with workarounds (even if we end up
leaving a rare fd leak on less-capable systems).
Meanwhile, I'm still working on my

9-STABLE -> NFS -> NetAPP:
I'm running a few servers sitting on top of a NetAPP file server ? everything runs great, but periodically I'm getting:
nfs_getpages: error 13
vm_fault: pager read error, pid 11355 (https)
errors on my screen ? not always same pid ? the annoying part is that it seems to always affect the same jail that is running .. if I shutdown all jails on that physical server, everything shuts down

--link-dest. Time to 'building file list' incrementing
I've been running rsync as a cygwin task on Windows Server 2008 for about two months now. I'm using the --link-dest option to do a daily 'snapshot' of the contents of a server containing about 10TB of data, about 13 million files, to a Linux based NAS server. Things started out great but I soon noticed that the time take to complete was slowly incrementing. It started at around

lattice and histogram
Hello again folks,
Thanks to all for the advice on getting hold of "grid"
and "lattice". I think I'm getting the hang of it.
This produces very satisfying arrays of histograms.
The typical command I am using is
histogram( ~ DATA.df$X | DATA.df$F, \
type=c("count"), layout=c(5,5) )
Now I'd like to ask a question slightly more subtle
