Avoiding transferring duplicate files
Hi All, I have a 75GB collection of data, including a lot of duplicated files, on a NTFS network drive. I want to backup that data across a DSL link to a Linux host. Currently I use cwrsync on a Windows machine to act as server to the Linux rsync client. I want to avoid transferring duplicated data, as the DSL link is a far more significant factor than computation/disk IO. I can't work

Eliminating duplicate photos
I've seen fslint and fdupes recommended for this in CentOS, but neither seem to be available as packages. Is anyone using either under CentOS-5.6? It seems that they are available in the rpmfusion-free repository, but as far as I can see this is not functioning with CentOS at present. -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of

Group Policy install MSI from Samba share
I have a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain and I need to create a group policy to assign an msi install to a computer. This has always worked fine on a Windows share, but now the install fails after moving to a Samba file server. I'm guessing it's some sort of permissions issue. Does anyone know how to make this work? James Dinkel Network Engineer Butler County of Kansas

Does Samba/Winbind not follow nested groups in AD?!?
Here's the situation: We have users who are members of groups and those groups are sometimes members of a 2nd level of groups. If a folder has permissions assigned to a 2nd level group, then the user can not access the share. Doing a "getent group | grep user | grep 2nd_level_group" also returns nothing. Samba seems to not be recognizing that a user is a member of a group under

sharing word files
hello I'm having the following problem: On a share I have a user with read-only access to word files. Another user has read-write access to these files. When the user with read-only access opens a word file and then the user with read-write access to these files opens the file, the read-write user has only read-only access. If the read-write user opens the word file first, then he has

"inherit acls" only works with "inherit permissions"
We are running a fileserver (Samba version 3.0.10-1.4E.9) on CentOS 4.4. No AD, clients are Windows XP and OS X. Linux acl's are used for access to directories and files. Each top-level folder belongs to a primary group with mode 2770. The acl's restrict access to lower level directories. We need to pass the acl's down the directory tree or else users may have unexpected access to

what OS do you use for Samba?
I'm trying to decide on a linux distro to use for our enterprise Samba server. I like that there is a deb repo for Debian from samba.org, but I'm more comfortable with CentOS (Redhat). I just want to be sure I have a well supported Samba server and I need at least the 3.0.20 version so I can use the "inherit owner" property. I also want automatic updates for bugfixes and

Removing Duplicates
Hi all, I am starting fresh with a local repository of mails, which almost certainly have duplicates in them. I am going to use maildirs, and ensure all mails are input with CRLFs. The question is: does anybody know how I can find and remove duplicates, either while injecting mail with IMAP, or afterward? I can use tools to find duplicate Message-IDs, but don't know of a way to remove

Shadow Copy Client blank, with error in logs
One computer will show the previous versions of files just fine, but every other computer I've installed the Microsoft Shadow Copy Client on will not show any previous versions. The Previous Versions tab is just blank. In the samba log, I get this: [2006/11/28 12:02:02, 0] modules/vfs_shadow_copy.c:shadow_copy_opendir(81) shadow_copy_opendir: SMB_VFS_NEXT_OPENDIR() failed for

Meaning of user.DOSATTRIB
I have the following attributes for a typical file on my redirected folders residing on my Samba4 AD/DC: $ getfattr -d "Newletters/Newsletter 2013-09.docx" # file: Newletters/Newsletter 2013-09.docx user.DOSATTRIB=0sMHgyMAAAAwADAAAAEQAAACAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPnD7jBHStABAAAAAAAAAAA= What do these characters mean? Is it possible to clone an NT ACL from one file or dir to a totally different file or dir ?
Can I use a command like this to clone an NT ACL? getfattr -n security.NTACL templateFile | sed -e 's/templateFile/realFile/' | sudo setfattr --restore=- I can see that the attribute gets copied over but when I view the ACL in Windows security tab it's not the same ACL, it's much bigger and includes all kinds of default-like stuff. --compare-dest apparently incompatible with --checksum or --size-only
I am working with rsync on Debian, package version 3.0.9-1. I am trying to use rsync --compare-dest to make a delta-copy of a directory. In my case, the mtimes are all unreliable. The data is the same, but the times are all messed up and always will be. I am trying to use --compare-dest with --checksum or --size-only and it does not work. All files are transferred and the delta copy

cross-subvolume cp --reflink
Glück Auf! I know its been discussed more then ones, but as a user I really would like to see the patch for allowing this in the kernel. Some users tested this patch successfully for weeks or months in 2 or 3 kernel versions since then, true? I''d say by creating a snapshot, it''s nothing else in the end. More then one file or tree sharing the same data on disc, or am I wrong?

Very slow changing permissions from Windows client
Our samba server authenticates to Windows 2000 Active Directory and I have ea support enabled on the share and on the file system. The OS is Debian Stable, fully updated and using Samba 3.0.23c from Backports. Now copying and accessing files is plenty fast, but when setting up permissions on directories that contain 100 GB or so of files and subdirectories takes like 60 minutes from the time I

Data De-duplication
Hi, Say I download a large file from the net to /mnt/a.iso. I then download the same file again to /mnt/b.iso. These files now have the same content, but are stored twice since the copies weren''t made with the bcp utility. The same occurs if a directory tree with duplicate files (created with bcp) is put through a non-aware program - for example tarred and then untarred again. This
