Does Samba/Winbind not follow nested groups in AD?!?
Here's the situation: We have users who are members of groups and those
groups are sometimes members of a 2nd level of groups. If a folder has
permissions assigned to a 2nd level group, then the user can not access
the share. Doing a "getent group | grep user | grep 2nd_level_group"
also returns nothing. Samba seems to not be recognizing that a user is
a member of a group under

what OS do you use for Samba?
I'm trying to decide on a linux distro to use for our enterprise Samba
server. I like that there is a deb repo for Debian from samba.org, but
I'm more comfortable with CentOS (Redhat). I just want to be sure I
have a well supported Samba server and I need at least the 3.0.20
version so I can use the "inherit owner" property. I also want
automatic updates for bugfixes and

Group Policy install MSI from Samba share
I have a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain and I need to create a
group policy to assign an msi install to a computer. This has always
worked fine on a Windows share, but now the install fails after moving
to a Samba file server. I'm guessing it's some sort of permissions
issue. Does anyone know how to make this work?

sharing word files
hello
I'm having the following problem:
On a share I have a user with read-only access to word files. Another
user has read-write access to these files.
When the user with read-only access opens a word file and then the
user with read-write access to these files opens the file, the
read-write user has only read-only access.
If the read-write user opens the word file first, then he has

"inherit acls" only works with "inherit permissions"
We are running a fileserver (Samba version 3.0.10-1.4E.9) on CentOS 4.4.
No AD, clients are Windows XP and OS X.
Linux acl's are used for access to directories and files. Each top-level
folder belongs to a primary group with mode 2770. The acl's restrict access
to lower level directories. We need to pass the acl's down the directory
tree or else users may have unexpected access to

vfs_shadow and [homes]
hi,
i was able to successfully run vfs_shadow on a samba share with win xp
shadow copy client. but i think it?s currently not implemented that one
could export [homes] with this vfs object, because AFAIK each @GMT-snap
has to resist directly under the samba share. but [homes] is a virtual
share representing different shares (depending on users).
has anybody hints about using vfs_shadow with

[External] subfolders in the R folder
The "good reason" is all the tooling in R doesn't work with subfolders and
would have to be rewritten. All the package check and build stuff. And
that's assuming you don't want to change the basic flat package structure -
for example to allow something like `library(foo)` to attach a package and
`library(foo.bar)` to attach some subset of package `foo`. That would
require

Question about folder sharing
Hi,
I run dovecot (2.1.7) on debian wheezy in conjuniction with postfix,
samba4 (as ldap backend) and sogo. I configured folder sharing but have
an few issues.
With my current config users can share the inbox and other folders. If
the acl allows creatings subfolders this does work for all folders
beside inbox.
What i want to archiev is the following:
If an user shares his inbox, others

[External] subfolders in the R folder
A quick drive-by-comment: What if 'R CMD build' would have an option
to flatten R/ subfolders when building the tarball, e.g.
R/unix/a.R
R/windows/a.R
R/a.R
becomes:
R/00__unix__a.R
R/00__windows__a.R
R/a.R
? Maybe that would be sufficient for most use cases. The only thing
I can imagine is that source file references (e.g. in check NOTEs)
will be toward the latter and not the

Folder layout after Cyrus to Dovecot migration
# dovecot --version
1.2.15
We're trying to migrate a server from Cyrus to Dovecot, and we're mostly
there.
On Cyrus, the folder layout in the MUA is:
INBOX
subfolder
subfolder
...
Sent
Drafts
Queue
Trash
Users cannot create sibling folders to the Inbox, only subfolders (and
sub-subfolders, etc). We've replicated that with:

Everytime I try to create a folder under my imap-inbox, I get an error like

my inbox-folder, but I can't use it ...

Dovecot v1.2 ACL inheritance for new subfolders (aka copying ACLs)
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hello,
http://wiki.dovecot.org/ACL mentions:
"Currently there is no ACL inheritance."
However this applies to a folder inherit ACLs to existing subfolders; when
you share a folder and a non-owner creates a sub-folder within, no ACLs
are set, hence, the creator cannot access the new folder. Could the

folder hierarchies with migration from cyrus to dovecot2
Hi,
I finally migrated my IMAP server from cyrus to dovecot2. I have been
using cyrus since many years and have not much experience with dovecot
yet though.
I've converted my imap server using cyrus2dovecot (several times until
I thought it was correct) but there is one thing left which confuses
me and I'm not sure what I can or need to do to change it.
With Cyrus I used

R CMD build now removes empty dirs
Hi,
It's unfortunate that with recent revisions of R 2.13 (this
appeared in revision 54640, March 2), 'R CMD build' now removes
empty dirs in the package. People might have good reasons for
having empty dirs in their packages. For example, in Bioconductor,
we have some tools to automatically generate annotation packages
and those tools are implemented in software packages that use

Public Folder ACL Problem

I am trying to achieve ACL set in Public folders, I have public namespace in
dovecot.conf like this
namespace public {

subscriptions = no
}

Can't remove folder (no thunderbird issue)
Hi,
first of all: yes, I already dug the internet but didn't find a solution - that's why I'm asking you.
My provider uses dovecot, although I can't tell you more about the version - sorry. Mail is stored in mbox format.
My trouble:
I was unable to create subfolders and googled a bit. A proposed solution was to append a slash at the end of the folder name.
I used Thunderbird to

I have just used Squirrel web client to re organize some old emails to
subfolders. that worked OK, EXCEPT, all these emails are now in order that
I have moved them rather than original date,
is that some 'simple' way to re-sort them back by original date ?
thanks for any pointers, sorry for dumb question

IMAP Folder Creation
I am using Maildir with dovecot 0.99.14-1 and postfix.
My IMAP server was working where I could create a folder in Kmail or
Thunderbird and specify wether the folder was to hold messages or folders.
Then something changed, and I lost all my folders that contained sub-folders.
And now I cannot create folders that contain subfolders (Kmail doesn't event
give the option anymore). I can
