Auto Create user home directory
now that all permissions are right - if i create a new user on the win 2003
active directory and specify a home user under profile i will get " the home
folder could not be created because: the network name cannot be found" I
know for sure I am getting that error because the user home folder doesn't
exist yet on the samba machine - is there any way to get the user home

Kerberos and PAM
I am new to samba. I followed the docs on samba.com to configure samba as
"domain member", security = domain, and to user winbind to authenticate
users against windows 2003 AD. well, my question is the steps mentioned the
use of PAM to do the authentications against the AD but it doesn't work - do
I also need to configure kerberos for this type of installation?

Cannot create writeable share - tried many different things
Hi,
I appreciate any help that can be given. For the life of me, I cannot
create a writeable share on a specific box - a fairly new install of
Fedora Core 5. I have posted on several forums over the past 2 weeks,
but haven't gotten anywhere with the advice given, so I'm turning to
this list as my last hope.
This box runs as an NIS client, but I have had no problems with NIS.

Different shells
Hi All,
I added Linux machines to my AD domain (Windows 2000 native domain) and have
the following problems / questions:
1 - How can I set the shell per user? (I know how to set per computer on the
smb.conf "template shell = /bin/sh", I have few users that work on the same
machine and use different shells)
2 - I noticed that if you logon as root, you can do SU to each user on the

samba+ldap: Simu.- login of 2 different users => user rejected
Has anybody had this problem before? If not, where should i start digging?
I'm running Samba 3.0.24 on Debian stable with slapd-2.2.23 backend.
smb.conf is attached below.
When two different users log in at the same moment, the login process
seems to freeze for a minute and the client (win2k) complains about
missing profile or missing access to profile. A single user login works
perfectly.

access users homes share
hey list,
we are currently migrating our users from novell to samba. now we have one problem: in novell we could give e.g. user1 access to users2 home share so he could modify, delete or add files on this share. in samba we defined a global homes share that is mapped on logon. so how can we give user1 the needed rights?
here is the definition of the homes share in smb.conf:

Authentication incompatibility?
I recently compiled Samba 3.0.23d on SuSE Linux 9.0 on an i386 computer.
The software appears to work but its not compatible with other SMB /
CIFS clients. If I use the newly compiled programs on two different
machines they can login and browse each others resources using the
'smbclient' program. If I try to use a windoze computer, the Linux
kernel (2.6.16.16 built on the same

samba+ldap windows problem
Hi everybody!
I don't know if this is a samba or ldap problem, so here is the problem and
you decide.
I've installed Samba+LDAP to replace the windows solution. The workstation
in the network are w2k so the need to logon to the samba+ldap for all the
setting to be fetched. The logon is working the only trouble is that I can't
get the option for changing the password, when I press the

Migrate to Debian Etch - nogo
Hi Everyone,
I have a small project going on. I'm about to migrate Redhat 7.3 to
Debian Etch (smbd version 3.0.23d-2+b1).
I've already managed to migrate Redhat 7.3 to Debian Sarge (smbd version
3.0.14a-) without any bigger problems.
However, when I migrate to Etch I face a small problem. The last thing I
want to do before I start samba is to grant my linux/samba admin,

adding nologin shells to /etc/shells
I need to set up some (err, a lot) of user accounts for (pop) mail and
ftp access purposes. But disallow shell login access.
What I can do to achieve this - and it works well - is to create a
small script, thus:
#!/usr/bin/tail +6
#
# /etc/NOSHELL
#
# Login shell to prevent shell access for user accounts

SFTP with dummy shells
Guys,
There was some discussion a while ago on this list about making SFTP
connections for users that don't have a "valid" shell. The solution i
saw on the list was to use sftp-server as a shell.
Now, that's fine and it seems to work. However, i would like to provide
SFTP access to users with arbitrary shells, no matter if the shell exits
immediately (/bin/false) or not (some
