Samba running slow
Hello everyone:
Over the past few years I have been a happy samba user, running samba on
Redhat / FC platforms. Recently I upgraded hardware, and Samba hasn't been
performing well at all.. which makes me sad :-(
The new hardware is Asus P5B board with a dual-core intel processor. This
board has an onboard Realtek RTL8111/8168B gigabit ethernet controller,
which was a hassle to setup.

opening excel sheets slow, copying fast ?
Hello all,
what is Excel doing while opening a file?
There is no delay when opening the same file localy or on a windows 2000
server. But on the samba server it needs 10 seconds. But copying the
same file (32K) has no delay at all. (With larger files things get
worse, while coping a 60 MB file takes 8 seconds)
Other mails mentioned recommended to disable oplocks, but this didn't

Dangers of oplock break wait time
Hello,
the man page is quite explicit about not fiddling with the oplock break
wait time parameter unless one has understood the oplock code.
Is there an explanation for this that doesn't require one to be fully
read up on the SMB/CIFS protcols? :) What form of errors are we talking
about? Race conditions? How dangerous is it?
The thing is that we're having a lot of trouble related to

local copy microsoft/credentials directory profile redirection
hello,
i've set up a domain controller to replace a production server.
both servers use profile redirection for all user environment directories.
my problem is that when logging onto the new domain and server, windows will
create in the %userprofile% local directory an Application Directory
containing Microsoft/Credentials/*SID*, although a copy exists on the
server.
this directory is used

Locked files stay locked - copy operation from XP to Samba fails
Hi,
When trying to copy 5000+ files from a client PC to a Samba server I have
the following problem. Halfway during the operation it hangs on always the
same file. Windows XP (SP1) gives:
Unable to copy file [filename]. Specified network name is no longer
available.
(I had to translate this from Dutch, so it is not the exact message).
When checking with smbstatus I get this:

win2k/xp clients cannot copy files after samba upgrade
I have a linux server that I'm preparing to migrate our samba services to.
It has been running as a stand alone server and I intend to set it up
as a PDC - we have another old system working as a PDC now.
Because of some problems during samba testing (quite awhile ago) I decided
to upgrade the samba version running on the server - the original packaged
samba was 3.0.20 and I downloaded

kernel oplocks 2.2.1a
Hello all,
Either the docs or the value in smb.conf.default is wrong.

ok, so oplocks: good or bad?
I have been searching for info on this and haven't found an
authoritative answer. From what I have read, oplocks are good because
they increase connection speeds, but they are bad because they don't
really work, but they actually do work, but they only work in some
cases, etc etc.
so, here's my problem and my question together: I get tons of these
messages every day (over a thousand a

Documentation / boolean fix for oplocks = command
In the documentation the "oplocks = yes" option is give in an example, as
the default for this parameter. However, I needed to turn oplocks off, and
so assumed that the command "oplocks = no" would work. It doesn't, instead I
found that "oplocks = false" does. There needs to be some boolean fixing
done, or at least documentation should reflect this strangeness.

samba and oplocks and office applications
I'm using samba version 2.2.1a on a linux RH7.2 kernel 2.4.7-10.
I'm having a lot of oplock problems, specially when using office
applications like word.
I would like to know:
1. what is the recommended configuration in version 2.2.1a (oplocks = yes/no
, level2 oplocks = yes/no , kernel oplocks = yes/no)
2. what is considered to be a stable version for oplocks usage
Thanks,

kernel oplocks
I am a little bit confused about the kernel support for oplocks.
man page of smb.conf:
----------------
For UNIXs that support kernel based oplocks (currently only IRIX but
hopefully also Linux and FreeBSD soon) this parameter allows the use
of them to be turned on or off.
This parameter defaults to "On" on systems that have the support, and
"off" on systems that don't.

SAMBA and Microsoft Access
I'm trying to use Access 2002 on a Samba server.....question, are there
special Samba parameters that need to be set so that 3-5 users can enter
data? All users have proper access (no pun intended) to the SAMBA
server.....

OPLOCKS....
Hi, I have an application under Access that is running dead slow. I've
done some testing and it appears that Access really likes to use OPLOCKS which
of course Samba does not support.
Is there any work underway to get Samba to support OPLOCKS? I know they are
difficult to implement but I'm faced with a decisions now to buy an NT box
