Does CentOS has problems with Norton Ghost 2003 images?
Hello all
We have two very important workstations dedicated to tasks of
development and investigation. At the moment we have installed a dual
boot platform with CentOS 4.0 and Windows XP Proffessional SP2. In
order to do backups of these machines we need to create an image with
Norton Ghost 2003.
We have worked with Ghost during several years with different
platforms (Red Hat, White Box Linux,

How to use rsync for Ghost or Acronis type backup
Hi folks,
I'd like to make a full backup up of my server, about as near to a Ghost or
Acronis type of backup as is possible using programs on the server itself.
What type of rysnc script can I use for it?
I know Linux has some pseudo directories and files that are not part of a
backup, will I have to exclude from the backup, or can rsync automatically
handle them?
Does rsync have option

Block Groups and Large Filesystems
Hello,
I'm creating a large ext3 filesystem on an LVM volume, on top of a RAID1
for storing Norton Ghost disk images. Most of the files created will be
between 1 and 10 GB; there may also be occasional small files also.
I'm already going to reduce the number of inodes on the filesystem.
Probably limit it to 102400 or so.
`mke2fs --help` reports a "-g blocks_per_group" option,

Chain loading to another PXE server?
Is it at all possible to chain load to another PXE server using
pxelinux?
I'm wondering because we are getting ready to roll out a new dedicated
server provisioning system at the datacenter where I work. In the past
we've used pxelinux to network boot the Linux installations (e.g.
anaconda.) We also use it to network boot to rescue mode, memtest86,
etc.
But we are moving to a new

Samba pdc, Norton Ghost enterprise edition and joining the domain?
Hi List.
We have a Samba 3.0pre21 PDC set up here on our prim. fileserver. We use
Windows 2000 SP2 on our PC clients. We install clients with system images
from disk and than install applications from one central machine running
Norton Ghost EE.
Ghost has the functionality not only to install the software from the
"console" on the ghost server, but it is also able to make the

Ghost Create account: procedure number out of range in Samba
Hello,
I would like to clone a Windows XP workstation that's part of a Samba
domain using Norton Ghost.
In Ghost you need to create an account in the domain to be able to add your
domain to the list of supported domains by the Norton Ghost console.
When I try to add such an account, I get this error message:
Unable to add DOMAIN to the list of supported domains,

partiton resizing question
The hard disk in my server/gateway started developing bad sectors and making
very strange noises the other day.. anyway i got a new drive and copied over
the partiton containing linux (ext3) onto the new drive using norton ghost
which resized it from 500 odd Megabytes in size to 20 Gigabytes, the new
drive works great but i have a few concerns since ghost knows nothing of
ext3..

Reason for slow MS-DOS MS client writes
The low speed of writes with the MS-DOS, MS newtworking client has to do with
the limit of MAXSENDSIZE (from TCPUTILS.INI)
By default, the value is 1024, but the maximum value is 2048. If this value
is not set to the same as the Samba server's SO_RCVBUF, then performence will
suffer GREATLY.
We had a Windows system hosting Norton Ghost images, but it took a dive, and
our company has

Tape backup question.
Hello,
I want to backup my PE2800 on tape but I'm not sure how to do this.
My PE2800 has a RAID5 setup with 2 72GB SCSI disks and a Seagate DAT-2 72GB
internal tape-streamer and I'm running Centos 4.3 with the latest yum
updates.
I'm not sure if this tape-streamer is recognised by the OS properly because
it doesn't show up along with my DVD/floppy
I also recieved with the

snapshots of server state with F/OSS software
I'm looking for something (ideally) in the CentOS repo that lets me easily
take and restore snapshots of my system while powered on (similar to how
later versions of Norton Ghost work). Is LVM my best bet to do this?
(I hate to admit this, but up to this point when I've been in a pinch, I've
just powered the box down on off hours and then imaged it via some sort of
live cd)

How to use rsync for Ghost or Acronis type backup
Madison,
That sounds like a really nice backup program. I'd like to try your

Thanks.

100GB incremental backups
We've recently migrated my entire University including faculty and staff from Novell to Samba.
There's typically 700+ clients connected to the samba server at any given time and thus far there are about 400GB of client's files on the server.
Basically every Microsoft Windows user generated file (Word, Excel, whatever) of the entire University gets stored on my Samba server.

samba problem with kernel 2.6.32-279.*
Hello,
We use Norton Ghost, running in a PXE booted DOS, to
handle Windows XP images.
The images are stored on a samba share on our CentOS 6
server.
This has worked without any problems for years.
After kernel 2.6.32-279* it has stopped working.
The symptom is that if I boot in DOS, and do:
net use x: \\myserver\ghostimages
dir x:
I get an infinite loop where the first file name is

On Machine Accounts
I have a few (~20) workstations dual booted with GNU/Linux and Windows
XP. When configuration changes on these systems (about once a month)
I deploy a full disk image with UDPcast [1]. Unlike recent versions
of Norton Ghost, UDPcast have no post-deploy option to change the
machine name and/or trust account. Most of the time those systems are
running on GNU/Linux and only occasionally will two
