Problems with print driver information stored in ntprinters.tdb
Hi Guys, I've have an issue (or perhaps more accurately a feature) with my production system running Samba 3.0.24 (Cups 1.2.9). We do not make use of server side print drivers, the reason for this is below. We therefore install drivers manually on our client systems. The issue that has arisen lately is that when a printer is added to a client workstation, Samba somehow picks up the name of

Corrupted ntprinters.tdb
Hi, we are experiencing periodic problems with our samba/cups setup: It seems like workstations which are locked but where users with the SePrintOperatorPrivilege are logged on destroy the ntprinters.tdb. This always takes place when the logrotate on the sambaserver runs the postrotatescript and restarts cups while the client is doing whatever it has to do. /var/log/messages says:

Authenticating VPN addresses: a proposal
TL;DR: a proposal for a new tinc feature that allows nodes to filter ADD_SUBNET messages based on the metaconnection on which they are received, so that nodes can't impersonate each other's VPN Subnets. Similar to StrictSubnets in spirit, but way more flexible. BACKGROUND: THE ISSUE OF TRUST IN A TINC NETWORK In terms of metaconnections (I'm not discussing data tunnels here), one of

Dragon NS 9 Standard Installation errors
Hi all, wondering if you can help me. Here is the problem I was running kubuntu jaunty a while back and finally managed to install DNS Standard 9 with wine. I don't think I did anything too special , just ran the installation disk, It worked Okay, it has to be said. It survived updates of wine, right up to 1.1.38, and an upgrade to kubuntu Karmic. However, I recently had a problem which

Administering samba locally without opening root to the net?
Hello. I'm trying to find a way to administer a (set of) standalone samba machines (3.x style) locally. Most things are now done using `net rpc' command. But this one connects to a (local) samba server over network, and hence requires auth. Another example is pdbedit tool which accesses local passdb.tdb file directly as long as user running this command has the necessary permissions.

How to repair corrupt ntprinters.tdb?
Hi, we are using samba 3.0.24 as a printspooler for 80 network printers with a 500kB ntprinters.tdb for some years now. When we recently restarted samba we noticed that the ntprinters.tdb automatically shrinked to 24kB and printing was no longer possible. tdbdump of the original tdb-file is impossible too: "Failed to open ntprinters.tdb" The strange thing about this: we can solve

kerberos issue (SPN not found) with windows Hyper-V ( samba 4.5.3 AD)
Hello, This won't be a very helpful reply, but I can confirm I've had the exact same issue. I ran into this a few years ago and could not get HyperV migrations to work with a Samba DC. I even went so far as to install a Windows DC just to prove to myself that it is supposed to work, and it does, perfectly (with ADDC it even creates all the SPNs for you auto-magically). Unfortunately at

IDriver crash on install
Hello all, I use Silkypix Pro on Wine (a licensed RAW file converter). It worked fine in the last few versions but the current one won't install: I get a popup "The program IDriver.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" the "InstallShield 1628: Failed to complete installation". A more complete log is below. Google

How to backup/restore printer settings?
Hello All, We have a problem with our samba-based print server (a redhat EL machine, running samba 3.2.8) occasionally getting corrupt ntprinters.tdb files. To combat it, I've been keeping nightly backups of the file, and restoring the latest whenever it crashes. This _almost_ works. When I restore the file, some of the printer settings - such as which driver it is using - seem to restore

kerberos issue (SPN not found) with windows Hyper-V ( samba 4.5.3 AD)
After reviewing logs I found that my previous assumption was wrong. Situation: - i'm trying to start live migration from hyper-v host A (BMSRV4-HYPERV) to hyper-v host B (BM-SRV-5) from host B (logged in as user from DOMAIN ADMINS group). Kerberos constrained delegation is set in accordnance to microsoft instructions with proper SPN's set (well, proper as in with the workaround I

multiple sql servers - loadbalancing and failover
Hi, Is there a way for dovecot to use a pool of sql (mysql) servers and load balance queries between these? Also fallback to next available sql server if connection to previous one fails. Can dovecot do such things currently? (If not this is feature request). -- Arkadiusz Mi?kiewicz PLD/Linux Team arekm / maven.pl http://ftp.pld-linux.org/

The smbd ran away with the spoon...
It seems that my smbd process got fuxed somehow. It appears to have take up all the file handles, and there were over 130 smbd processes running on the system. I'm not entirely sure what happened. My first thought is that something bad happened between the server and the Windows client that's running Kaza (with a couple hundred mid-download files) and it just spiraled out of control,

Samba - faster failover to other AD servers?
We just had an interesting experience here. One of our AD servers was down for 90 minutes due to the server being physically moved to another location. This shouldn?t be a problem since there are 5 other AD servers in that ?group? that can take over the load. However it seems Samba (when used as a fileserver) for some reason is taking quite a long time to ?give up? on the first one and switch to

Replicating printers, drivers, and settings between machines
For backup and redundancy purposes, I've been needing to replicate CUPS printer queues between two Samba servers, and came up with the following shell script. We use a fairly sizable number of CUPS printer queues printing in RAW mode, and install the printer drivers from the Windows clients, so all clients actually download the printer driver from Samba at first use. User migration issues
I've been looking throught the archives for a set of things to be done to migrate a install with samba 3.2.5 (lenny) to another server (wheezy) I can cope with the name change, that's no problem, but I'd like to avoid having to recreate the users on the new server, so far I tried this, without much success - scp the smb.conf to the new server - make hot backups cd /var/lib/samba

upgrading print server from 2.2.8a to 3.0.8
Hello. I'm having a bit of trouble with my upgrade. I installed 3.0.8 over a copy of the 2.2.8a directory, and when I went to start it up, got errors about accessing the secrets.tdb. I was able to use tdbdump to access it and created one in the new format using tdbtool, but then it's also unable to access other old-format tdb files, most notably ntdrivers and ntprinters. The only

proxy: can I use the password returned from passdb to log in to the back-end?
I am hoping to support encrypted passwords, which I know is generally not allowed in a proxy setup. However, I can return the password in clear-text out of the password database, so I was hoping for something similar to the destuser field. I have successfully used the master password functionality to support encrypted passwords (users impersonating themselves), as long as the back-end server
