PDC migration: printing trouble.
Hi all,
we've been moving an old Samba 2.2.x PDC install to a Samba 3.0.28 PDC
install. We copied the ntdrivers.tdb and ntprinters.tdb from to old to the new
server. After the migration, everything was just fine, except printing seemed
to be somewhat slower. As more and more user logged on, the machine got really
sluggish and printing took quite long. We figured out we've got bitten

Making nt_printer.tdb from tdbtool?
Hello All --
We are trying to consolidate our printer management from
a series of NT print servers to a series of Samba ones,
in a global network with ten offices and about 150 printers.
All printing is PostScript and goes to HP and Canon printers
over lpd through custom 'if' filters which do accounting.
To help this we're trying to automate the printer and
driver registration

PDC -> BDC Question
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering I am setting up a BDC at another physically separate
location on a different subnet, and I am currently working on what files I
need to have copied between the computers and which need to be made on each
server. The specific question I am dealing with is what TDB files I need to
replicate filesystems between the two servers. Below is a list of what the
files I

smbd wont start
My samba has been setup in its current configuration for around 9 months and
has worked without a problem, over the weekend my windows boxes were unable
to access the samba shares. Using SWAT I found that the smbd was not
starting. I have tried the following:
Trying to start smbd (as root) from the cli with:
smbd start
Seems to execute the command and gave no errors but still swat says that

Difficulty converting from RH 7.3 to Debian Sarge
I am running debian sarge 2.4.27-3-686 and samba version 3.0.14a-Debian
. The previous machine was running rh 7.3 (valhalla) 2.4.20-29.7.progeny.11, samba version unknown. I have restored all shares and directories. Most of users can access everything, however our login script will not run. For those users that cannot log in re-joining them to the domain not only works but then the login

what are *.tdb files?
In /varcache/samba/ I have several .tdb files. Like brlock.tdb,
locking.tdb, ntdrivers.tdb, etc. Excusing my ignorance, what are these
files, and what do they do? And why must they be copied when migrating
from one samba server to a new one?

Printer settings don't stick
Experienced programmer, Samba noob, CUPS noob; trying to use Ubuntu
6.06 Server as a print server for Windows XP clients on a home LAN.
Worked through the Howto and got point-and-print to work for my Canon
iP1200 (raw CUPS queue, and I used the Windows XP Add Printer Wizard
to upload the driver to the print$ share).
However, I can't persuade the printer driver to change the ink
cartridge mode

WG: PDC -> BDC Question
Hello Nick,
I do not think it is possible to just copy files like this from one to the
other samba.
You can do the copy job with rsync or scp.
I made a samba PDC and BDC with ldap master ldap slave. So on both servers
are the same users
Groups etc.
Both machines must have the same SID

edited tdb... restart samba?
I had to remove reference to some printer drivers
via tdbtool on ntdrivers.tdb.
1. Do I need to restart smbd and nmbd to make these
changes take effect?
2. If I restart smbd and nmbd will connected users get
disconnected?

New Printers with Samba 3.14 driver upload
Hello Everybody,
we got new networkprinters and set them up.
They work fine, but driverupload doesn't seem to work.
We deleted the drivers used by the printers we had before.
My question is should I also delete the .tdb files associated with printing?
I remember driverupload once worked well with the printers we had before.
Any advice would be nice.

Slow printing / print properties with CUPS and Samba sort-of-solved
I've been banging my head against some printing problems
that I've been having for quite a while. This weekend
I am migrating an old server to new hardware and a new
base OS, but the version of Samba and CUPS remain the
same. Because of this I moved all the config files
and the contents of /var/cache/samba from the old
server to the new. (Foreshadowing: this was a mistake,

Move PDC to another server
Hello,
I'm trying to move my samba server to another box.
I copied uniw and samba users, groups, machines, with the same ID
I copied samba conf files
I copied SID (with net setlocalsid and net setdomainsid)
But i can't open a session on new PDC server :(
Any idea, or tutorial to change my server without re-add all computer to domain ?
Thanks for help.

Proper use of tdbbackup
I have googled a lot, but I have found no examples of the correct use of
the tdbbackup program.
I am looking for some advice on how to use tdbbackup. I mean, I know I
can simply run "tdbbackup *.tdb", but I was looking for in-depth
information on when and how to use it, about best practices on using it,
or what NOT to do.
The Samba documentations says I should run it in my start/stop

auth samba+squid+ntlm
Hi.
I need to use the ntlm_auth module to auth. users so a group can use Internet
and other not, using squid. The users that belong to "Internet" group may use
Internet.
I've being looking for info. about this but there is no much info. in google.
Until now this is the only info. that I had found:
for squid.conf:
auth_param ntlm program /usr/bin/ntlm_auth

Automated printer driver problems
Hi,
I am having a problem with automating the download of printer drivers from
a Samba 2.2.8 server.
We used to use the server with he following options set:
use client driver = yes
disable spoolss = yes
However these options have now been removed from smb.conf.
Following the instructions available in printer_driver2.htm (supplied in
docs/htmldocs in the source), I can add a printer driver to

How do I upgrade from 2.2.5 to 2.2.8
Samba List Serve Users:
Is there a document or web link that follow that describes the steps to
upgrade Samba from 2.2.5 to 2.2.8? The documentation on samba.org the I
have read assumes that the install is a fresh install and not an upgrade.
Thanks so much,

Administering samba locally without opening root to the net?
Hello.
I'm trying to find a way to administer a (set of) standalone
samba machines (3.x style) locally.
Most things are now done using `net rpc' command. But this one
connects to a (local) samba server over network, and hence requires
auth.
Another example is pdbedit tool which accesses local passdb.tdb
file directly as long as user running this command has the
necessary permissions.
