Problems joining ADS Domain with Debian
I am running a Debian Linux system with Samba 3.0.23d and the
2.6.8-3-386 kernel. I found a howto for adding a debian samba server to
an ADS domain on debian-administrator.org but when I get to the point of
actually running the 'net ads join' I get the following errors:
'resolve_name:unknown name switch type dns'
And
'ads_connect:No such file or directory'
Does anyone

upgrade 3.04 to 3.0.23d ?
Greets again, samba-users,
been offlist for quite a while now, Samba worked OK for me ...
I am currently researching a problem on a server that hasn't been
updated for years as it seems.
Suse 9.1, Samba-rpm samba3-3.0.4-5 ...
The problem is that files (that have been stored by Windows-clients via
Samba) backed up by Amanda can't be restored correctly, as it seems this
especially hits

can samba figure out the "closest" domain controller in ADS mode?
I'v got working Samba ADS servers, but "net ads info" shows most of them
are associated with Win2K3 domain controllers that are in different
sites than the ones the Samba servers are in (we have a large WAN with
DCs in every site). I'm not configuring "password server" as I want
Samba to be more fault tolerant than pointing it at one DC - when there
are many to choose

Failed to verify incoming ticket
I am running samba 3.0.23d on Gentoo. I have a particularly problematic
server that is a domain member of our AD domain.
After joining the domain, shares are available and user credentials work
just fine. Then, suddenly for no apparent reason, it stops working. And,
then again, just as quickly as the problem starts, it goes away. I have
looked at this thing as many ways as I can possibly

prevent "delete user script" to delete special Samba user
Hello,
OS: FreeBSD 6.1
Samba: 3.0.23c
What kind of exit code do the "delete user script" need, to
prevent Samba from deleting a user in tdbsam database?
I'm testing Windows "User Manager for Domain" (usrmgr.exe) and
I'm trying to convince Samba to NOT delete special users like
"administrator" etc.
Whenever I delete such a user within User Manager for

Autogenerating of operatingSystem and operatingSystemVersion attributes in AD
When Samba joins to AD, net creates 'Computer' object in target AD.
Object 'Computer' has attributes operatingSystem and operatingSystemVersion,
which automatically setup in properly value, when native Windows join to AD.
I offer a patch to utils/net_ads.c to do similar way - set up operatingSystem
to "Samba" and operatingSystemVersion to Samba version, when Samba

How to change SID in ntuser.dat?
Hello,
i try to migrate user/groups from NT4 PDC to Samba3 with LDAP backend.
There is already an NIS-Server with Samba runing, so there exists two
userlists.
I migrated the user/ groups from windows via net rpc vampire and
added/changed
the UID?s from the NIS-Server but didn?t change the SID.
A teammate told me, there could be some access problems, if i don?t
change the SID.
So i tried to change

smbtorture4 fails RAW-LOCK against 3.0.23d
I think the message title says it all. I was attempting to do 'make
test' against 3.0.23d and include the smbtorture4 tests from 4.0.0tp3
(as I read somewhere to be a good idea). Is there any reason that the
test should not work? Does it have something to do with the 'unknown
parameter'? Make test works fine without smbtorture4.
Platform is Solaris 9 on sun4u. Samba 4 was

ACL inheritance like NTFS?
Hi all,
I will migrate a windows fileserver to a Suse System with XFS-filesystem
and Samba. I will copy the files with the robocopy tool from Microsoft.
I did some test and I noticed that XFS-filesystem does not support
inheritance like NTFS. If there a solution for that problem? How did you
solve that problem?
Thank you!

svcctl - access denied
I have a samba 3.0.23a server that is a member of a Windows 2003 Active
Directory domain. I can use the Services MMC to see the services specified in
the svcctl list option in smb.conf but trying to stop/start any services gives
me an "Access Denied".
I have tried this as a normal user as well as the domain Administrator account.
I'm sure it's something I'm missing, but I

Share-level security; how does it work?
Hi guys,
I have one FreeBSD server which will run Samba, and one windows client.
I want the server to have two shares; each protected with their own
password. So once i have connected the windows client to one share, when
i click on the other a password-box should popup; with user-level
security this does not work, Windows will use the same credentials as it
used for the first share. So now i am

New book!
I've yet to see someone announce the 3rd edition of "Using Samba" from
O'Reilly came out this week. I got it on Tuesday, so I guess it shipped
Monday or Friday.
If anyone else is as addicted as I am to having a solid bank of dead
trees at my disposal for reference purposes, I hope this is useful
information.
