howto "upgrade/transfer" samba domain-user + domain-group data to a new windows 2003 act
You could do what we do - just replace the local machine policies each time you rev the policy set. They're stored in c:\windows\system32\grouppolicy. Using gpscript.exe (Google for it, don't have a specific site) you can dump the contents of either registry.pol file to text. You can also recombine textfiles back into a .pol file, and subsequently rev the gpt.ini file so your new .pol

web collaboration packages.
Hello All, Try as I might, I cannot get Zimbra 8.0.3 to install on CentOS 6.4, even with --platform override. I followed some tutorials even that show the result working and nada. Can anyone suggest a good setup for e-mails erving, calendaring, web mail? Web mail is particularly important for my wife so she can check e-mail when she is at work. Jason

spurious domian login problems
We have a few win9x workstations, that have spurious login problems. They get the message: No domain server was available to validate your password you may not be able to gain access to some network resources. The passwords are definetly correct and the problem will sometimes disappear after 5 - 10 retries, but almost always after a full restart of the win9x PC, very occasionally it takes as

apologies for duplicate posts - btw what's the real diff between gmane.network.samba.general and mailing.unix.samba?
Sorry to those of you that have received duplicates of my messages over the easter weekend. I had subscribed to the nntp server of my isp (pipex uk) and searched for "samba" it showed a few hits but "gmane.network.samba.general" showed as containing no posts but "mailing.unix.samba" showed a bit more than 20'000 so I subscribed to that and sent a slurr of

had 3 kernel panics since upgrade from 3.0.21a to 3.0.25 and 3.0.25a on CentOS 4.4
Does anybody have any ideas on this? On our server that has been running 'rock-solid' with no crashes we have now had 3 kernel panics that each appear to have been triggered by the newly upgraded samba daemon. We used to run samba 3.0.21a for 'years' with no crashes. On May 26 we upgraded to 3.0.25 June 9 10:58:28 first crash kernel panic process involved according to log

Calendar server
I recently switched to using Thunderbird for my email and installed the Lightning calendar add-on. Now all I need is a remote calendar server. I just need a simple server to support a few personal calendars and a shared calendar. Any recommendations for a CentOS / Apache based calendar server? -- Bowie

disable "fake" samba authentication error messages
What bothers me is that samba is filling up my log files with a lot of extraneous/fake entries about authentication failures. "Extraneous/fake" - because all it is is a reflection of the way the protocol actually tries to login - going through the upper/lower case mutations as configured. sample log entries: ----------------------- Jun 30 19:40:35 dolphin PAM_pwdb[26988]: 1

Upgrade 3.0.11 to 3.0.12 serious issues
Linux Samba 3.0.12 + acl (ext3) =============================== When upgrading from 3.0.11 to 3.0.12 ACL's do not seem get used anymore. We are using the inherit acls options for both maps and files. After the upgrade users are unable to create new files in directories where they used to have privileges for. The error returned is: "The file already exists. Do you want to

db vs filesystem
Hello mailinglist! We are currently building a largish community-site, where users are going to receive diskspace to upload files and share with each other. Now we have to decide whether to put these files on the filesystem, or in the db as blobs. The pros and cons we have summed up so far is: --db-- faster than filesystem (according to some) easier to separate from the webservers, since they

seeing/setting file or directory owners from win9x just like from nt/w2k
Hi All, Is there a way (speak command/wsh script) that allows a win9x workstation that is logged into a samba domain server (running onlinux for example) to see from the workstation what owner a certain file or directory has? Under win2k the "dir /q" command does this adequately. And if this is possible, is it then possible for someone to change the ownership of a file to another

Replacing my Scalix mail server
I really need to either upgrade my Scalix server or replace it. It has to be: Free Integrated with anti-spam IPv6 support optional anti-virus (processing concerns) I don't have to be able to port mail from the Scalix to the new server. Everyone can just POP their mail. I have read a bit about Zimbra, it comes as a tar for rhel 5. No rpm that I can find. I also found SME, I have a LOT

xen - 4 concurrent virtual DomU limitation - how to increae this? (centos 5 x86_64)
Is there a switch or config setting somewhere that would allow me to start up more than the default 4 xen DomU instances? I am finding that the CentOS 5 (x86_64) installation only allows me to start up 4 virtual machines at a time. (It is definetly not a lack of cpu resources, memory or disk space.) Any help or pointers, would be much appreciated. Regards, -- Urs Rau

how to get logon.bat run with Administrator rights in domain logons?
On win XP Pro workstations it would be so convenient if the domain logon script which is stored on the samba pdc could be made to run with Administrative (or System) privileges. I know that I can interactively run another security context by choosing "run as user" but how could I achieve this non-interactively and domain wide whilst a "limited account" is loggin in? Thanks
