workgroup drive mapping
Hi All, I have samba serving homes and group shares in my workgroup. 30% of client systems are portables and spend >50% of their time off site. Others are fixed single user workstations. I have no need to operate a domain, however what options do I have to simplify mapping drives once local network or VPN access is restored. Is there some logon script type stuff I can use just for the

Choosing Domain vs. Workgroup
I thought I wanted to set up my Solaris file-server as domain controller for my small home network, but the more I look at it the less I'm sure. Plus I'm having trouble doing it :-). I do plan to put my primary files (and other people's) on the server, for better safety (mirrored disks, and ZFS) and backup. I certainly want the logon transactions over the network to be encrypted,

How to disable hal's polling of CD-ROM drive in CentOS 5.1?
Given that I hardly ever use the CD-ROM drive, it makes no sense to have hal constantly polling it for new media. How can I disable this polling in CentOS 5.1? Thanks.

Handling PCI/ROM space
I'm seeing oopses in probe_roms() and pci_find_bios(), apparently because those pages are not mapped under Xen. I'm not sure why I'm seeing this now and not before, but I suspect its because I enabled CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC. Anyway, I've got these patches to deal with these cases: --- a/arch/i386/kernel/setup.c +++ b/arch/i386/kernel/setup.c @@ -276,7 +276,14 @@ static

Unable to boot from USB CD-ROM on AMD Geode LX800
I'm trying to build a bootable CD for an Advantech PCM-4153 board (based on an AMD Geode LX800) that will allow to boot from USB CD-ROM drive. I've created an ISO that will load ISOLINUX (3.51) and appears to load the kernel and initrd images, but reboots the system when it tries to run the kernel. When I use either isolinux.bin and isolinux-debug.bin, the last messages I see on screen

CD-ROM virtualization
I''m new to Xen and I''m trying to scan the source codes. Anyone could please give me an overview of how the CD-ROM access is virtualized in Xen? What are the source files involved in that? OFF TOPIC: Chainloading CD-ROM boot after ISOLINUX + MEMDISK.
Hi, This is off topic for this list, but someone on this list may be able to point me in the right direction. For a couple of years I have been using ISOLINUX + MEMDISK and Smart Boot Manager to chainload a CD-ROM boot after loading a floppy image into RAM with MEMDISK. My problem now is that Smart Boot Manager does not support/detect SATA optical drives used in new hardware. Does anyonw

Help with running childrens cd-rom in Xubuntu
Hello, I'm a newb with wine and not terribly bright with linux. I am trying to get some of the kids' games to work in Xubuntu. I got wine installed, and it seems I got the hot wheels game installed, after finding that I needed to run everything as sudo. Now when I run the program in the windows window I see a low-res video of a cd-rom being inserted into a disk drive, presumably

I issue "virt-install" to start a new VM install, with /dev/cdrom containing the source files for my Centos installation I want to do. I answer all the questions "virt-install" throws at me, and when it

cd-rom drive for linux
Hi, I have a question about cd-rom for linux system. Although it is not related to samba directly, I believe many people in this group are expert about linux and may give me correct answer. I am going to buy a pc to install linux (the most recent slackware one). My question is: do I need a scsi cd-rom drive to install and run linux on the machine? is the regular one enough? -- if yes, I can
