no frills samba server
Hi,
Since the fast track to replacing my NT domain controller didn't work
out too well I'm starting with the basics. Right now I have the
drafting office setup going from chapter two of the Samba 3 By Example
book. My smb.conf is as follows:
#########################3###################
[global]
workgroup = MIDEARTH
security = SHARE
[Plans]
path = /plans

Unable to add an xp machine to my domain
Hi there,
I've been going through the samba 3 by example book and have now
successfully replaced my NT 4 PDC with a Linux machine running samba and
an LDAP backend. Beautiful.
However, I've run into a slight problem. When I try and add a new XP
pro machine to my domain, I get the following message:
A domain controller for the domain TEST could not be contacted.

Join 2012 Server R2 as member to NT domain
I don't have anything but Server 2003, 2008 and 2012 to test with. 2003
joins the domain without issue. 2008 and 2012 will not. The registry
has been updated on both:

IPC$ and valid users
I have Samba 2.0.5a running with multiple configuration files for
different groups of users (one config file per group). In the common
config file (which does an include to load the group file) I set valid
users to a one specific group.
In the group config files, I then set valid users to include the necessary
group (and also do other stuff like restricting the interface the

Netware CIFS nlm - linux samba
Dear Gurus,
We're having bizarre problems/behaviour. Admittedly we have an unusual
set-up:
- users on linux desktops (RedHat/KDE) mounting files over SMB using
samba-2.2.5-10 -client and -common rpms.
- files are on a SAN, clustered behind 2 netware servers (6.5), wihch run the
cifs.nlm (netware guy has gone home - can't tell you the version just now)
Files are spontaneously

Windows Policies and Samba 2.0.4b - More information
Hello all,
I wrote yesterday about problems with Windows policies and Samba 2.0.4b
yesterday. Since then, I've had someone ask for a more detailed
explanation, so here it is.
Samba currently provides domain logons for a number Windows 95 and 98
clients (as well as the standard file serving). The domain logon currently
succeeds, a user's username and password is accepted and the client

htb: class 10007 isn''t work conserving ?!
I''m getting the following error/warning at some point in my config
script, and I''m not sure which class it is referring to.
htb: class 10007 isn''t work conserving ?!
I [think I] understand that htb is a non-work-conserving qdisc, and I
[think I] have configured things so that every htb qdisc I instantiate
limits the bandwidth, so I don''t understand why this

%L substitution...
Quick question for the Samba team,
Just wondering if there is a reason that a %L substitution changes the
WHOLE string after the substitution to lowercase (in standard_sub_basic)?
This was causing me a big headache as I was using a %G later in the
string, and this was being translated into a %g...
Here's the relevant section of code from lib/substitute.c:
case 'L' :

Is acts as nested set safe in a concurrent environment?
Hi I was wondering if acts_as_nested_set can be used safely with
concurrently updates? The fact that so much of the tree needs to be
rewritten on inserts concerns me. Is anyone actually using it. I
noticed that the status of acts_as_nested_set was unclear at the time
the rails book was written.

Permissions issue with CIFS mounted share

Indeed, it does seem to be backwards in compatability as apposed to backwards compatable.

kernel assertion error
I''m running 2.6.7 + (julian''s multi-path patch) + IMQ (imq2+beta6) and I
got the following on my console while doing some stress testing:
KERNEL: assertion (tp->retrans_out == 0) failed at net/ipv4/tcp_input.c
(1827)
I don''t know what I would do to try to reproduce this condition; it only
appeared once.
tcp_input.c sounds deep enough to scare me off from looking

User can't acess shares
I have one user on my network who cannot access samba shares on one of
our servers.
We have two machines running RH 6.0 (Kernel 2.2.5-15) and Samba 2.0.3.
The user in question can access shares on one machine but not the other.
The user has the same unix and samba password on both machines. Both
machines are set up to use encrypted passwords. The user logs in from a
win98 machine. Other users,

I''m sure that I had found (and printed out ...) a really good tutorial

seem to find it now.
Any pointers?

how to set valid allowed workstation logins
I'm having trouble setting the Workstations value on a tdbsam backend
using pdbedit. I can't seem to find the correct syntax to accomplish
this.
I found some references in an older version of the HOWTO where there
existed "Chapter 10. Account Information Databases". This whole chapter
is missing from the current HOWTO even though it is referenced in the
newest version (a
