sizing a print server for 10'000 users
Hi, I'm building a print-to-PDF queue system for a customer. A Samba queue pass jobs to Ghostscript. The PDF output is then provided back to the user (by email or web URL). My question is on server sizing. It will be on Linux (SLES 9) and will only host the print queue, nothing else. Samba will be joined in the ADS domain, so I can recognize the submitting user (%u). Every Windows client

IMAP4rev1 broken with evolution
Hi, I'm running 1.0rc6 on Solaris/SPARC, compiled myself against openssl. Client is Evolution 2.6.2 on my gentoo x86 laptop. As Dovecot is not yet productive, we run it parallel to UW-imap, on other ports. I use TLS. If I configure my evolution client with server-type IMAP, everything works fine. However, dovecot claims IMAP4rev1 support. However, when I set server-type to IMAP4rev1 in

Samba doesn't free network resource with XP clients
Hi all, We are having a difficult time with Samba 2.2.7a on AIX. Since XP clients appeared, we see growing leaked resources on our ATM network adapter buffers. Stopping Samba frees all leaked buffers. The short-term fix is to stop/start samba in a cron job. Hideous quirk at best. The local network admin traced the SMB exchanges, and found that some applications don't generate "SMB

staled connections between Samba and password server
Hi all, I'm progressing through an issue we have at a large customer site. We have slowly eliminated the basic issues, but the main problem remain : the Samba server stacks up staled connections/sockets up to max, until the service breaks. A restart flush the staled connections and Samba works again. platform : IBM 4-cpu server runing AIX 4.3 Samba : 2.2.7a compiled with gcc 2.95.3

not working : valid users = @"DOM+USER"
Hi, I have Samba 3.0.4 on Solaris 9, recent patches applied. Samba is integrated in domain (security = domain). I have compiled and configured winbind, but not pam and no ldap. Ncsd is stopped. Winbind works OK, I can connect to share and users get mapped on-the-fly to UNIX uids and gids in the ranges specified in smb.conf. My config is included below with some tweaks to protect the innocent.

"Wbinfo -u" get user account sucessfully but "getent passwd" fails
Hi everybody, I got a problem here with my Samba ADS member server. It functions as a file server and works for a long time. A few weeks ago our Active Directory domain controller failed due to power outage. We fixed it and now an employee reports that he could not use the samba file server any more. I restarted samba service and did the following testing: 1) getent passwd <thisUser>

Winbind being flakey
After some more screwing around with leaving and rejoining the ADS domain I was finally able to access a share with "valid users =" set to a domain group I was a member of. The _only_ change I made after this was to add yet another group to the valid users on the share and restart samba...after that I could no longer access the share. I removed the additional group, restarted samba and

Problems w/ winbind and AD group membership
Hello friends, I am using samba to join a linux box to an active directory domain to use as a file server. I would like to be able to control access to shares based on AD domain groups. However, even though winbind seems to be seeing the groups fine, samba is not granting access to users who are members of the group. I am able to successfully join the system to the domain and granting access to

Problem with authentification Samba 3.0.24
Dear listmembers, a few weeks ago i've installed a server based on openSUSE 10.0 and Samba 3.0.20 in addition to two existing Windows 2003 servers. My aim is to replace the Windows servers in medium term. The Samba server uses Kerberos v5 to authentificate the users against the W2003-Server. The W2003-Server ist the primary domain controller, the other W2K3-server is the "backup domain

Not getting new mail notification
Hey all, I'm having no luck getting new mail notification except in two mail folders (using maildir w/procmail delivery). I'm using three different clients (sylpheed-claws 1.9.14, Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 and a newer version of Horde). None of them are getting new mail in any except these two folders (inbox and 1 other). If I browse to the folders, still nothing. If I browse to the

High CPU load
Hello, I'm using dovecot-1.0.b9 on a FreeBSD 6.1 system. Usually we have 6 clients connected to dovecot through IMAPs. These clients are Thunderbird 1.5 programs. After some hours, one or two processed go up to 100% WCPU. As an example, this is what I see when I run 'top': last pid: 5111; load averages: 1.34, 1.82, 1.75 up 13+00:04:09 15:26:59 150 processes: 2 running,

Samba over SSH to Windows Vista
After having scoured the net for a way to do SMB over SSH with Windows, I've tried everything I have found and I still can't get it to work. I'm using Windows Vista as the client and FC6 with Samba 3.0.24-1 as the server. I have set up a share and can successfully connect to that share with no ssh tunnel. I would like to tunnel SMB over SSH, so here is what I have tried: 1.

Using parameters in lpq command conflicts with background lpq
I have an application than makes use of the "lpq command" and uses the %U parameter in the command string. The application returns a personalized queue list based on the value of %U. This technique worked well in older versions of Samba (circa RedHat 8), but I have run into some trouble with Samba 3. The issue appears to be twofold. 1) The lpq command is now run from the

Jobnames displayed by lpq: Fixed a bit
There has been some correspondence about getting the file names displayed with lpq instead of the smbXXXXX name. The -J option works, but, with some documents, notably Microsoft Word and Corel WP9, the application sends a long preamble, such that the file name is never seen in the queue when listed with lpq. eg: Microsoft Word - PRINT FILE NAME.doc So, to fix this up, at least for word documents,

Some users can connect and others can't
I have the following configuration on one of my file shares using 3.0.10. And I have found out that some users can get files off of the server and some cannot. The users that cannot connect get the error. "Incorrect password or unknown username" Connect as; Password: After playing around awhile I added one of the users to the computer with useradd. They were then able to
