Accessing member server prompts for credentials
Hi, I'm trying to join a server as an AD member but it isn't working. I do: kinit ADMINISTRATOR@DOMAIN1.CO.UK which prompts for the password and displays nothing else. Then I do: net ads join -U Administrator%XXXXX which returns: Using short domain name -- DOMAIN1 Joined 'SERVER1' to realm 'DOMAIN1.CO.UK' So all looks OK, but when I try to browse the shares on

File Lock Timeout
Hi, I've seen posts (but no answers) about clearing a file lock on a Samba share. Presumably this kind of thing happens when the program abnormally terminates and doesn't close its open files. I've got a file that smbstatus reports as: 1216 DENY_WRITE 0x20089 RDONLY NONE /shares/share1/Files/december.xls Fri Jan 12 12:51:30 2007 Trying to open this in Excel

Automount Windows home directory
Hi, Is there a way to connect to the Windows user home directory share from a Samba client automatically? At the moment I can manually connect to the share using "mount -t smb" using the usual hidden/protected credentials file. Obviously this needs editing every time my domain password changes (as enforced by policy). However, since getting the workstation to authenticate me from the

Mounting for non-root users
This has been asked before but the answers haven't worked for me.I upgraded from 2.2.7 to 3.0.0. I used to connect to Windows sharesusing smbmnt in .bash_profile as a non-root user having chmod 4755smbmnt. Now this doesn't work: - smbmount won't let non-root users run it (even after a chmod) - smbmnt says "Failed to find real path for mount point" - mount -t smbfs says

General note on help list...
R-Helpers I am just getting started with R and am learning the basics. I have 'Introductory Statistics with R' by Dalgaard and decided to join this help forum too. At present, I am receiving approx. 40 posts per day regarding R queries by various list members. Is there any way to turn that feature off such that I only receive responses to my questions? Once I learn the basics then I

Samba members in NT4.0 to AD upgrade
Hi, I've got an NT4.0 domain that I'm planning to upgrade to Active Directory. I've got a couple of Samba member servers in the domain, various versions above 3.0. So I have two questions: 1. Are there any gotchas with this scenario or will the Samba clients just keep working as NT4-esque clients. 2. Is it possible to "upgrade" a Samba member server to be an Active

Samba-3.0.23 problem
We had to power down all servers today for electrical maintenance in the building and for some reason I began having access problems related to the valid users lists when power was restored. The dialog from the 'Samba-3.0.23 broke my network' thread seemed as if it might be related even though I had not performed any software upgrade so I tried adding the group mappings as discussed in

locked files that shouldn't be
Running 3.0.4 on FreeBSD 5.2.1. Today there is a regular text file that appears to be locked. It is an ini file for an application. The file can be opened with notepad but if you try to save it an error message pops up... "The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file." smbstatus does not show this file as being open and it is mode 777.

Locked files that stay open after a PC crash
Hi, How should you deal, as an administrator/root, with locked files that stay open after a PC crash and the user can't access them any more. For example: The PC crashes and the user restart. MS-Outlook complains that it can't open its outlook.pst file, that is on a samba share, with the proper read/write access and the user can't get any mail. As root you do a smbstatus -u and you

Locked files stay locked - copy operation from XP to Samba fails
Hi, When trying to copy 5000+ files from a client PC to a Samba server I have the following problem. Halfway during the operation it hangs on always the same file. Windows XP (SP1) gives: Unable to copy file [filename]. Specified network name is no longer available. (I had to translate this from Dutch, so it is not the exact message). When checking with smbstatus I get this:

Spoof server name to redirect calls to another server?
Hi, I've got an ageing NT4 server on our NT4 domain. The hardware is getting unreliable and few people use it. Unfortunately/predicatably the few people who use it are senior staff and they have some (important, naturally) Excel spreadsheets which link to files on this server by name. As I haven't been entirely successful in weening them off this server I've been keeping it ticking

Pre-compiled OS X binaries?
Stephen F. Booth, the author of a number of audio progs for OS X (sbooth.org), is a subscriber to this list too and he might be able to provide an OS X build of FLAC 1.3.0. However, I can understand the Xiph policy of only supplying officially blessed versions compiled by themselves. I guess we'll have to wait for 1.3.1... WINS names intermittently unregister after 5 days
Hi, (I posted this question about 6 months ago and never really got anywhere with it so I thought I'd try again.) We're using Samba as a WINS server. Windows servers appear to correctly register themselves and I can look them up e.g. with nmblookup. However some servers lose their registration after 5 days. And it's the same servers, about 4 (of about 25 servers and 200

Then, if user2 attempts to open the file from another workstation the following message is displayed: "file1 is locked for editing by ''" Problem: *user1* is not displayed between the single quotes.
