Speeding up Samba
I have a 3.2 GHz P4 Win XP Pro connected to a Fedora Core 4 server running on a 2 GHz Celeron. I get about 350 MB/s FTP transfer over a Gigabit Ethernet connection. Samba is very much slower between the same computers. Can Samba be sped up to where it approaches the FTP performance? -- Chuck Forsberg caf@omen.com www.omen.com 503-614-0430 Developer of Industrial ZMODEM(Tm) for Embedded

Rails PDF Documentation
hi, i''m falling in love with rails, but the main obstacle is digesting the huge amount of documetation for it... i''m getting dizzy flipping back and forth between my development and the online reference. i know rails is in a constant state of flux, but surely there is a pdf-ized version of the api reference out there somewhere. alas, google tells me there is no such animal.

User/Group HWM ignored when converting idmap from tdb to LDAP
Hi! I'm trying to convert my tdb-based idmap mapping to a LDAP-based one. This generally works as intended, with one exception - the highest uidNumber/gidNumber in use is not transferred, and this causes duplicate use of the same uid/gidNumber. Here's what I'm doing: 1) net idmap dump /var/cache/samba/winbindd_idmap.tdb > idmap.dump 2) Set idmap backend in smb.conf to

detecting blanks in read.table()
Hi everyone, I am trying to read in a tab delimited data file to R that has outliers marked by blank spaces. I would like to be able to tag those as "NA" when the data is read in. I cannot figure out how to do this using the read.table() options. Everything I have tried either puts all the NA on the end of the row when there are missing values instead of on their appropiate columns

Write/Display AR query as Grouped Results?
I''ve got a publications table that contains an author_id foreign key and a pubrole_id foreign key. What I want to do is query the DB using AR so that I can get a list of all publications that belong_to a particular author, and group the results by the pubrole.role_name (Author, Joint Author, Editor, etc.) so that the results look something like: Author book1 info book2 info etc.

Writing to a ReExported NFS Share With A MAC
I ran into this problem and was unable to find a solution here or in google. Thought I'd post it to the list so maybe it'll help someone out in the future. Gentoo Linux running 2.4.22 and Samba 2.2.8a. ReExporting an NFS mounted share on a NetAPP fileserver connected to eth1 via samba out eth0. All PCs are able to write fine but when writing to the share via a mac using OSX the

Multiple Clients, Winbind and idmap in LDAP, documentation incorrect?
Hi! I have a setup with several Linux machines running samba-3.0.22-10.1.17 (from SuSE 10 OSS), authenticating against an AD. Since one of the machines is exporting an NFS share mounted by the rest of the machines, I need SID <-> uid/gid mapping to be shared between all Linux machines, which led me into using an OpenLDAP server as idmap backend. My smb.conf is found at the end of this mail.

Migrate from an NFS storage to GlusterFS
Hi - I already have an NFS server in production which shares Web data for a 4-node Apache cluster. I'd like to switch to GlusterFS. Do I have to copy the files from the NFS storage to a GlusterFS one, or may it work if I just install GlusterFS on that server, configuring a GFS volume to the existing storage directory (assuming, of course, the NFS server is shuuted down and not used

Pokerstars
I have installed wine 1.1.13 on Debian 4.0. I can run the PokerStarsInstall.exe just fine. Poker Stars works fine but I do not get any icon. Then when I close out Poker Stars, the only way I can run it again is to run PokerStarsInstall.exe. No other .exe files do anything. Any suggestions would be great! Thank you!!

Vorbis suitable for PDAs?
As Linux is starting to apperar on handhelds the tought of having a portable Vorbis-player is everpresent in my mind. However, one things worries me... A user running linux on his (ipaq?) PDA reported skipping and halted playback using mpeg123. Apparently this was caused by lack of processor resources because mpeg123 was programmed for a FPU-enabled CPU. (Thus performing very poor on a

Migrating to new Samba - LDAP schema change
I'm working on upgrading a Samba server from Version 2.2.8a to Version 3.0.4. One of the things I've noticed is that the samba.schema has changed. I'll admit that I haven't done an exhaustive search yet, but in looking over the documentation I haven't seen any mention of anything that needs to be done to migrate an existing directory to the new schema. Are there any tools
