file-attr-restore and dollar signs
Hi All, I've been using the great file-attr-restore script with rsync to get around problems with uid's on a portable hard drive... It's the perfect solution for me. (for those that haven't seen it,you can get it here: http://samba.org/ftp/unpacked/rsync/support/file-attr-restore ) Anyway, I found a small bug in the script. file-attr-restore fails for file names with dollar

smbclient's tar_re_search broken?
Hi all, My old and stable backup script don't work anymore. It's based on smbclient's tar command using crX parameters for creating archive, excluding files based on basic regular expressions. The box is running Fedora core 2, fully updated: kernel-2.6.8-1.521 samba-common-3.0.7-2.FC2 samba-client-3.0.7-2.FC2 The error is easily reproducible: smbclient //ntpdc/share -A credfile \ -c

How to read NTFS ADS (alternate data steams) using libsmbclient?
Hi Samba team, We have a Windows SMB share which contains some files with ADS (alternate data streams). In our client C/C++ code that runs on a Linux client, we want to retrieve the list of ADS of a file and download all the streams, similar to what is provided by smbclient's interactive session (allinfo, get). But as we evaluate libsmbclient (as we'd like to do above in code), we

winpopup and Domain auth?
OK, yesterday I was asked abut moving an existing Python program from an NT machine to a Unix machine. This involves sending a message to winpopup. So, after some digging I found smbclient's -M option. Well, it works fine when I send it to a machine that is not part of the site domain. When I send it to a machine that is logged in to the domain, I get "session request invalid". Any

3.0.20 documentation bug
3.0.20 documentation bug: The smbclient's printmode command (which didn't actually do anything) has been removed in samba 3.0.20 but is still documented in the smbclient man page. -- Roger Cornelius rac@tenzing.org

Getting 8.3 samba short filenames in linux
From a windows client it is easy and fast to obtain from a samba share both the long filenames and the short 8.3 names by using DIR /x. Is there a way for a Linux client to obtain this same information swiftly for a large directory listing - or indeed for the samba server to show this information? The only way I have found is using smbclient's altname function but I seem to have to call

How to dynamically replace the text behind dollar sign: '$'
Dear ALL, I need a function that takes character string as argument value and replaces corresponding argument( which is behind dollar sign "$") in function body with its value. For example: function(dataframe, argument="ANYTHING I WANT") { return(dataframe$argument) } Even though I know there must be lots of possible alternative ways to do this, I

SMB signing broken? 3.0.7 -> 3.0.8
Hi all. I originally suspected this problem was with netbios (which I have disabled by default) and Jerry has helped me out a bit with but I've been doing some more digging and I think the problem lies back further than I expected. I was trying to upgrade from 3.0.7 to 3.0.11 so I've recompiled all versions back from 3.0.11 and the problem first occured in 3.0.8. The issue is with

Converting dollar value (factors) to numeric
Hi, I'm trying to read in a bunch of CSV files into R where many columns are coded like $111.11. When reading them in they are treated as factors. I'm wondering if there is an easy way to convert them into numeric in R (as I don't want to modify the source data)? I've done some searches and can't seem to find an easy way to do this. I apologise if this is a trivial

Useradd doesn't accept dollar sign ($) and "add machine script" doesn't work
Hi, I have set up a Fedora Core 3 machine with Samba 3.0.9 to act as a PDC file and print server. Everything works fine but I am having problems adding new machine accounts. When I try to add them manually using "/usr/sbin/useradd -g machines -d /dev/null -c "Spruce" -s /bin/false SPRUCE$", I get the error message: "invalid user name 'SPRUCE$'". I can add
