Help With File transfer of files named "Apple*" + Lacie 5Big RAID
Hello Rsync Community,
I have been using rsync for several years to backup servers across an
array of different areas.
I have run into a new problem that I cannot find an answer for.
We just recently purchased a Lacie 5Big Network RAID: http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=1596257
for one organization.
We set up a test server to start backing up to this RAID via AFP. The

accented characters in filenames mangled when rsyncing to a samba share
Hi folks,
I am having a problem rsyncing files with accents in the names. I've
seen similar problems reported a few times before in the archives but
they didn't seem to be referring to exactly the same problem as what I
have, and I'm not good enough at Linux to solve my problem by
generalising from the information there: sorry.
Anyway, my specific details are this. I am running rsync

hi.
i'm hitting a wall each time i try to format a 3 terabyte partition. i'm
able to create the partition using parted but whenever i try to create a
3 terabyte xfs or jfs or ext3 filesystem, the mounted filesystem created
is only 1 terabyte. i tried centos x86 and x86_64 4.0 but i always hit a
1 terabyte limit. please help.

rsync time machine backup permissions
Dear rsync users,
I'm trying to copy my Time Machine Backup from my old USB hard drive to a new one. I got error messages, because rsync don't create group and other permissions.
I use rsync 3.1.3.
Did I use the correct parameters? Who has an idea, what mistake?
Thanks!
Best, André

Rsync via ssh hangs on same file repeatedly
Hi all,
I'm having problems with an rsync via ssh process hanging during transfer.
The basic problem, (gory details to follow):
I've set up a machine on my LAN to act as the receiver and have two
(soon to be more) remote servers transferring files via a script.
It seems as if certain files are causing the transfer to hang. These
are different files on each of the sending machines,

smbpasswd fails with unix password sync enabled
Hello again,
I would like to thank Giant Wang and Miquel Bonastre for their responses
to my query in "Samba Digest 1734" regarding simultaneous passwd changing for
users via Samba. Their comments were helpful, but have not solved the
problem.
For those who do not have a back log of the Digests, the problem is that
with unix password sync=yes, users are not able to change their own

OT: Replacing Venerable NAS
I have an original-label Infrant (now NetGear) ReadyNAS storage
appliance that's been running for 8+ years. Except for replacing its
power supply, it has not skipped a beat in all this time.
I use it primarily as a backup device (via NFS) for a couple of Linux
machines, (via SMB) for a couple of Windows PC's, and (via ftp) for web
sites at my hosting provider.

guest share on a " security = user" server
Hello,
our samba server runs in security = user mode.
Now I need a share people can connect to, even if they are not in the domain.
I tried this configuration
[open]
comment = Fuer Scripte die via Mcafee gestartet werden
guest only = yes
#security = share
path = /san/san-lacie/abteilungen/allgemein/mcafee
read only = no
writable = no
printable = no
Browseable = No
but it does not work.

Can I use direct attached storage as a shared filesystem in Xen
I have a quad core server in which I want to run 4 virtual servers. On this
server I have a 1/2 terabyte raid 1 I have split between the 4 members that
have the OS on it. I have raid 5 10 terabyte internal storage running on a
3ware 9690a card. I want to share this storage between the servers without
partitioning it. Is this possible?

OT: Extracting Subject Lines from IMAP Mailbox
Looking for a command-line way to extract only the Subject lines from my
mailbox on my ISP's IMAP server, without actually downloading/modifying
the contents of the mailbox. Sort of the remote equivalent of locally
doing:
$ grep ^Subject /var/spool/mail/mymailbox > subjectlistfile
Thanks.

Building 3.0.21x on AIX 5.2
I've followed the instructions in the README at
http://us4.samba.org/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/AIX/ for building 3.0.21x on AIX
5.2 ('oslevel -r' reports '5200-07').
The last version I was able to build on the system was 3.0.14a.
3.0.21c's configure completes with no errors, but the make immediately bombs
with:
# make

EXT3 performance on Large (multi-TeraByte) RAID
Has anyone experienced a significant degradation in ext3 performance when using it on a Multi-TeraByte RAID? As part of an experimental setup, I hooked up three 300GB drives and made an EXT3 RAID5 out of them, using the entire space one each drive, and started throwing a large number of files in the size-range 3KB to 50 KB. Then, I deleted the raid, and created a new one, but this time, I used

Replacing Multiple Servers with One
We are replacing four servers, running mail, web, ftp, and dns,
respectively, with a single server to run all four services.
The new server will have a new IP address.
It seems fairly straightforward to redirect mail, web, and ftp services
to the new server via DNS CNAMES, but I'm not quite sure about how to do
the change for the DNS service itself.
Is there a need to maintain the old

CD Baby using FLAC to archive 40,000 CDs
Hey FLAC gang -
Just thought you'd like to know CD Baby has switched to FLAC for archiving the 40,000 CDs we have in stock.
Luckily HD space is down below $1/gig so we got a 6-terabyte RAID-5 box set up for about $7000.
Got the FreeBSD boxes churning away night and day, ripping and archiving.
I'll do a more formal press release for ya in a couple months as we're further along, but

Interesting, I thought that XFS was fairly safe for use. What would
you recommend for filesystems in the 50-500 terabyte range?

test, and H/W
Hi, folks,
This is a test post; to make it of interest, here's an issue you might
want to be aware of, those with not brand new hardware. We've got a few
Dell PE R415s. A 2TB b/u drive on one was getting full, so I went to
replace it with a 3TB drive (a WD Red, not that it matters.) We got the
system in '11.
I built the drive - a GPT, 1 3TB partition, on an R320, from '12.

Can anyone make a suggestion to a good USB2 PCI card for centos?
