The samba server (server12) is set up as a PDC for a WIndows domain with
XP clients. Samba is Version 3.0.26a-SerNet-RedHat. OS is Centos 3.9.
There is also a separate mail server (server56) running FC6 which uses
NIS for user validation.
NIS server is running on server12.
Generally speaking, everything is working and

window, samba and ldap passwords
Hi,
I recently migrated to a Samba3x domain. One issue that has been
reported to me is that XP users cannot change their password from
their PC. I have done some searching and I haven't seen a straight
forward answer to this.
My config is
ldap primary + Samba PDC on host A
ldap slave + samba BDC on host B
I see this error in the machine log when someone attempts to change
their password:

User Group SID behavior has changed from 21b to 23c
I am using LDAP as my backend. I have 6 PDC's running Samba 3.0.21b,
each domain has a different SID. I store all user, groups, and machine
accounts in one LDAP database. So that when I create a user once, all
domains can see the user. This keeps me from having to create a user
account on each domain for cross domain file sharing.
The behavior for Domains running Samba 3.0.21b is a follows.

Win XP Client password change nightmare.
Hello,
I have setup a Samba server with CentOS 5.2 and Samba 3.0.28-1.el5_2.1 (the
CentOS included versi?n).
I have configured Samba as a PDC following "Samba-3 by example" chapter 3,
"Secure Office Networking". No DNS or DHCP active, as far as for now this is
just a test environment.
Most of it works fine, but trying to change user passwords for a MS-Windows

LAN switches with PoE? PoE phones?
Hi all,
I'm looking for recommendations on ethernet switches for a new
install. Ideally would want switches with at least 24 ports,
ideally with a GE uplink, and that support PoE (power over
ethernet) on every port. I've seen lots of switches, and lots of
"power hubs", but the combination, which makes a lot of sense,
seems rare. What is out there? Do the switches need to be

VoIP dialtone?
Hi all,
While pondering my choices for local dial tone service via a
bunch of POTS lines or a T1, I began to wonder if perhaps there
is another way.
Are there VoIP dialtone providers? That is, could I use only my
internet connection for voice calls and not have a separate
T1/POTS bank for that?
I guess I am imagining a company that gateways between the PTSN
and the internet backbone.

'passwd chat' for Debian Woody password sync
what is the 'passwd chat' line for Samba 2.2.3a-12.3 on Debian Woody that enables
password synchronisation with Windows 2000 clients in a domain?
I currently have this in smb.conf but it doesn't work:
unix password sync = yes
passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
passwd chat = *Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:*

shadowLastChange not updated
Hello,
We have an otherwise working Samba PDC+LDAP setup but for one minor
detail. The shadowLastChange is not updated when the user sets his
password from a Windows workstation (all the necessary Samba*-fields as
well as userPassword is updated in LDAP).
We've enabled 'ldap passwd sync = Yes' in smb.conf.
slapd.conf contains the appropriate access rule for the said field.

Password Change from Windows machines ("You do not have permission to change your password")
Hello,
I just wasted several hours trying to figure out why I could not
change Samba passwords from Windows XP computers. I'm posting here so
that there is some form of documentation about this on the web.
My setup is basically this:
- Samba 3.3.2 (running under Ubuntu 9.04)
- OpenLDAP user database
- Full O.S. support for OpenLDAP auth, using nsswitch and PAM.

Users unable to change their passwords using 200/XP change password dialouge.
I've just found out today that my system won't let users (2000 and XP
clients) change their passwords.
>From their consoles they get permission denied messages.
Looking at the logs its clearly a Samba/PAM interaction issue but all looks
OK in the pam.d directory.
I've spent a few hours searching online but can't find anything that match's
this scenario.

LDAP BDC- Classic Domain
Hi Guys,
We're trying to add a BDC in Samb4 classic domain setup. The Samba 3 How -To and Samb3 by Example covers this but uses the old slapd.conf option, we are using the slapd.d config. I couldn't find a similar document for Samba4
Can you please advise that the following steps will work? LDAP in the existing PDC is working using the smbldap tools

Icecast2 / edcast Initial Setup Question
Hi,
I have setup Icecast2 and edcast (standalone) on an XPSP3 machine. The
basic setup works. I can speak into a microphone and hear my voice from
another PC on a LAN.
Now I want to "stream a file" such as an mp3 podcast I made or just a
song (mp3, acc etc.) or play a CD and don't know what to even search for
in the mail archives, forum or Google to get help.
I can't
