If I made samba join to the test domain, do I able to take off from test domain and join to the real domain without re-install samba? Thanks, Jeffrey

NIS Authentication Help!
Hello, I have a question that I was wondering if someone could help me with. I am an admin at RIT and we have a large network base of Sun machines. We do authentication via NIS over NFS. We are about to receive a full lab of Windows boxes and need to set up a samba server to serve users' home directories to the Windows boxes. This initial configuration is relatively easy, but we want

Can't Join Domain "The User name cannot be found"
I have a small Samba installation, two servers and about 10 workstations. The hard drive on one of the Windows XP workstations failed. I cloned a drive a from an identical machine and replaced the defective drive. When it came up it had the name of the original machine (which was off). It worked fine. This group is small and fairly stable so I add machines to the domain manually. The server

To anyone successfully using NT ACLs with Samba
When you re-open the properties of an existing file or directory with ACLs set on it from a Windows workstation, do you see the usernames and group names properly? Or do you see SIDs in the dialog box as I do? Just gathering data. If you are seeing usernames and group names properly I'd love to see your smb.conf file. In my case, the Samba server is an AD domain member. -- Thomas Boutell

Can I recommend theora to my readers yet? Please?
Hi, I'm working on updates to the WWW FAQ (okay, it's a little much to use the singular in 2006, but it was the first!). Embedded multimedia has been a sore spot for a while. I've been recommending that people embed old-school MPEG, because it works in all players. But it's awful. Terrible bitrates. I'm on the verge of recommending SWF instead, even though it's a hideous

Understanding Samba 4's features and goals
Hi folks, I'm the co-author of "Windows and Linux Integration," a recent Sybex/Wiley title. So I'm very much interested in what's coming next in the Samba world. And I've been watching the Samba 4 'technology releases" with interest. One nifty feature that I like a lot: the old options that specified many confusing types of server behavior have been replaced

Problems joining existing domain W2K SP4 and Samba 2.2.8a
Hi all, I seem to be having some weird problems while trying to add a workstation to an existing domain. Samba 2.2.8a is running on FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE-p17 and all the clients have Windows 2000 Professional with SP4 installed. This particular workstaion was part of the domain until its hard drive went under. The drive had to be replaced with a new one, the OS was installed and now when I try to

Unable to set ACLs with Samba 3.0.11, near publication deadline
Hello, Jeremy and Jerry, I met both of you at LinuxWorld in Boston, where I learned tons and tons of great stuff from your presentations. I'm writing on deadline for publication and would really, really, really like to show off Samba's ability to map NT ACLs to POSIX ACLs. But right now, I can't make them work. I've spent some time on the Samba list trying to make this work, but

Linux Join Domain Problem
I have a Linux RedHat 7.2 system that I'm not able to get to rejoin our domain which is using a Solaris 8 system running Samba 2.2.5 system as a PDC. The Linux client is running Samba version 2.2.1a. When I try to join the client to the domain and I submit the computer name and the domain name in the computer identification control panel, I'm prompted for the root user and password on the server, so I enter root and the root password on our Samba server. I then get a message saying that it

Unix user rights to join domain
Hi, I recently joined a Samba server to a Samba PDC'd domain. It worked rather smoothly after I figured out that I had to create a root account with smbpasswd on the Samba PDC. Without it, I was stuck with the following error: > smbpasswd -j WHATEVER -r WHOCARES -Uname%password error setting trust account password: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED Unable to join domain WHATEVER I'd rather
