Fwd: Re: Migrate NT domain 4 to samba
I tried "net lookup dc" and samba PDC did not show.
The NT machine we have has been shut down and not functional
anymore. Right now, we only have one linux box with gentoo running samba
and we want it to be the PDC.
Thanks,

Bad passwords from Vampire / NT migration
I just did a clean install of Fedora 9 onto a Pentium 4 machine. It is actually running SELinux enforcing, but I haven't found any errors related to that so far. It is running Samba 3.2.3-0.20. I am trying to migrate a Windows NT 4.0 domain with about 30 users and 30 computers onto a pure Samba setup, using Samba as the PDC and tdbsam.
I have read the HOWTO guide extensively, and

Help in performing a Half-Migration from NT to samba3.
I am currently planning "half a migration" (and half a new configuration)
from NT to Samba PDC, and I would like to have some help. I have read the
howto and I have understood something useful, but I also understood that I
don't know enough of Samba domain internals to be sure not to make
terrible mistakes.
I currently have a NT4 PDC that also shares files and

NT Migration Auth Problem with NIS & Samba3
Hello,
I have been working to migrate away from my failing NT PDC to Samba (3.0.23d)
on a Solaris 8 server running NIS. Passwords, etc.. are kept in
/etc/yp/passwd, and the passwd command is used to change passwords (not
yppasswd).
I have used the vampire command to migrate all user accounts from the NT
machine, while Samba acts as the BDC. This appears to work correctly, and

With a Samba 3 PDC, can I promote a Samba BDC to become new PDC?
I'm helping out a small office upgrade their NT 4 PDC to Samba. It's a small
office of 6 people, so tdbsam is being used. They keep having tape backup
issues
and other problems, so one of the reasons for the Samba migration is to allow
me
to SSH into their box and remotely administer it from home on
evenings/weekends.
Currently I'm testing the move using two dummy machines, and

but ofcoz' that doesn't work (NT error code 0x1c010002)

Migrate NT PDC to SAMBA PDC
Hi all,
I'm trying to migrate NT PDC server to Samba PDC.

Unable to update SID using pdbedit
Since I have had trouble getting the net rpc vampire command to
properly migrate passwords, I have been looking into stripping down
the net rpc samdump results into a smbpasswd backend file, then
importing from there into my tdbsam.
The first problem I ran into is that the samdump produces RID values
from the domain, whereas I need it to represent UIDs that already
exist. No problem, since my

Can not add a new NT Workstation to a new (vampired) samba domain
I am replacing an old NT4.0 Server with a debian 4.0R1 etch Linux server
(samba 3.0.24).
This was with a completely fresh install of debian.
My smb.conf is pretty simple:

workgroup = BUTLER
netbios name = STAR3
passdb backend = tdbsam
domain master = No
domain logons = Yes
os level = 33
add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -m '%u'

Samba will not start
Hi,
Right after I run "vampire" (net rpc vampire -S gia42c-1 -U Administrator)
command, samba would no longer start.
The samba server was installed on Gentoo linux and running behind a
firewall. The PDC which is Windows NT 4 server is on different subnet with
no firewall. Please check the log and smb.conf below and see if there's
anything I can do to make "samba"

migrating NT4 PDC net rpc vampire errors with capital letters
Hi,
I have searched for days on Google and can't find a clear answer to my
question. I have a NT4 PDC which I am migrating to Samba 3 (Version
3.4.2-47.fc12) on FC12 with kernel(2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686). I am using
tdbsam as my passdb backend.
I setup Samba as a BDC and then joined to NT4 Domain succesfully. When I go
to vampire the accounts I get lots of errors and some user accounts get

net rpc vampire
Ok folks, here goes:
We have an old NT4 machine that we wish to replace as the PDC on our network.
In it's place, we've got a dual xeon box with Mandrake LE2005 and Samba
3.0.13-2 and I'm currently trying to draw the accounts over with vampire. I'm
using tdbsam as a backend.
I've been through several readme's and howto's and have created all the UNIX
accounts,

net rpc vampire -> segmentation fault
Hi all,
I am trying to migrate NT4 domain to Samba-3 PDC, yet I stuck at
migrating NT4 PDC information using "net rpc vampire" -- giving
"segmentation fault".
Any help?
I use: Debian Linux, Samba 3.0.21a-Debian

"net rpc vampire" case sensitivity problem
We just migrated a small network from a Win2K PDC to Samba, using
"net rpc vampire" into a tdbsam backend on a Samba 3.0.2a Linux box.
One of the users, let's call him Jon Harker, had the NT username "JHarker".
When we ran "pdbedit -v jharker", we saw this:
Unix username: JHarker
NT username: JHarker
Well, that looks wrong - the NT

NT4-Samba Migration Test Results
John,
We previously corresponded on our testing of Samba 3.0.0 RC4. Since
then,
we have downloaded the Samba 3.0.0 Release version for testing with some
interesting results.

Major Networks: Solaris (NIS), Windows Native NT4 Domain
Our Test Plan
We are testing Samba 3.0 as a candidate for replacing the old NT4
Domain.
Being a complex production networking environment, we replicated

approximate net rpc vampire HOWTO, as promised
Hi Folks,
as promised, here's what I did to get net rpc vampire working. There's
a question at the bottom that someone might be able to answer for
me. If the detail below is sane, I'll tidy it up some and submit it as
a proper HOWTO. If not, please tell me where I'm being insane :)

Machine accounts, Samba 3, NT Domain migration
Greetings everyone
I finally succeeded in doing the seemingly most difficult thing, "following directions." I got my act together configuring the smb.conf and migrating using net rpc vampire into tdbsam. There are issues with this migration in which computer netbios names which are obviously all uppercase were not being created in /etc/passwd. I put my C cap on and converted the computer

BDC keeps taking over and not allowing logins from NT PDC
Hello, thanks for looking over my ramblings...
We have an NT4 PDC with and NT4 BDC on 192.168.132.X, these boxes are
very very old and overloaded. I am trying to replace them with a nice
shinny new Samba box. My problem is that while I am trying to test it
out to make sure it plays nice it keeps winning the elections.
I find this weird as I have set the box to domain master = no and turned

Resetting passwords using pdbedit?
[Environment: Samba 3.0.2a with "passdb backend = tdbsam" ]
I want to be able to reset user passwords from the command line
on the Unix server, without knowledge of the existing password.
If I was using an smbpasswd file, I could call the "smbpasswd"
command and it would edit the file. But with a backend, that's
not available to me.
The "pdbedit" command will
