entries in /var/log/message
I am noticing the following entry in my /var/log/message file: Mar 5 04:03:31 dbserver1 nmbd[7317]: name_to_nstring: workgroup name MSHOME,DATABASESRV is too long. Truncating to MSHOME,DATABASE It is in there a lot. Is this something I should try to fix? Thanks Randy

nmbd error: workgroup name is too long
I found a similar thread in this mailing list from a few years ago, but it looks like there was never a clear resolution. (https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2015-February/189450.html). SAMBA 3.0.22 unusual nmbd spawning
Hi, we had upgraded our SAMBA PDC from 3.0.14 to 3.0.22 on a Gentoo system. Now we have problems with peculiar spwaning of too many "nmbd" processes. In smb.conf WINS support is activated, so I would expect two nmb processes. But as you can see in the process list, during SAMBA is running after some minutes another nmbd child is spawned. I tracked down the problem to one example: We

bind or samba configuration preventing browsing network
I have a networking problem where I am not certain if the problem is samba or bind. I am still pretty much a nb at linux. The machine in question is running openSuSE 10.2 and is named rd1. I had samba working fine before I started to make it a WINS server and DNS host. I have a small LAN with no real administration functionality. The network is used for simple file sharing and dial-up

XP can browse samba by IP, but not by name - NMB issues?
I have an XP home (falcon) and an XP pro (tatooine) machine, both behind a rh9 box (hoth) acting as firewall. I've been trying to get samba set up on the linux box. I think I have it mostly working except that the XP boxes won't list hoth under "My Network Places - Microsoft Windows Network - MSHOME", and I cannot access hoth by name at all from the XP-pro box (by IP, I can

virtual server configuration issues
Greetings, I've used samba for many years now on various platforms and its worked very well. I'm now trying to use 'virtual servers' to combine several smb servers on one machine and have been following the clear and simple instructions here: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch04_07.html (I've also cross-referenced these instructions with various posts to

Mshome "deactived" by samba?
Hi, I'm setting up openSuse samba on my home network (ethernet) so my linux and the two winXP machines can file share. The linux machine is also where all the backups for all the other pc's are stored. My workgroup is MSHOME. When I start up my winxp pc I can see the linux machine in My Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > MSHOME However, after a few

Mac can't connect to debian after upgrade to Samba 3.0.23
After upgrading my Debian box to Samba 3.0.23, I'm no longer able to connect to it from my Mac OS X 3.9 machine. I can still connect from the linux box TO the mac, but not the other way around. I need to be able to mount the linux volume on the mac. I've had to downgrade to samba 3.0.22 on linux to get it to work. My home network is a simple 2 machine setup with a wired connection. My

strange permission denied problem
I built an embedded box which uses mount.cifs to mount network shares. I've shipped several of these and all are working fine except for one, which gives me permission denied on certain files: root@Mnemosyne:~/mnt/bgrp1/c/Ballance Group Folders/Scully/Client Photos-Scully# cat "Office Pics 002.jpg" > /dev/null cat: Office Pics 002.jpg: Permission denied

XP Home and samba
I built a small embedded samba server based on Samba 3.0.26b. I tested it locally with XP Pro running in a vmware VM. All worked fine, so I shipped it. Turns out the person using it is running XP Home. Here's her note: I have restarted the computer and waited ten minutes and still nothing. All that comes up is the mshome under the Microsoft Windows Network. So it looks like all

openldap - samba
I am having a problem getting users that were added in smbldap-useradd to be able to login. After I add them they are visible, but you can see I get this error - pdb_get_group_sid: Failed to find Unix account for test10 I believe that this has something to do with nss_ldap. because doing a getent passwd, it doesn't display any smb info. Any debugging info or help would be amazing, I'm
