Fstab mounting error
Hi all,
I've googled on this but no luck so far.
I'm using FC4. This works flawlessly:
Mount -t smbfs //host/share /var/mount/hostname/sharename -o
username=username,password=password,domain=DOMAIN,fmask=0777,dmask=0777
However, it fails in fstab when I do:
//host/share /var/mount/hostname/sharename smbfs
username=username,password=password,domain=DOMAIN,fmask=0777,dmask=0777 0 0

Strange file locking behaviour
Hi all,
Bit of a sticky situation - we use rsync to mirror files from a remote
staging server to our development server (both on Linux). The mirroring
works fine, however, while the rsync process is running, our apache service
on the destination system can't access the files. Is rsync locking the
destination file system while it checks the files or something? Anyone got
any idea how I

Trouble connecting to Samba shares set up under FC6
Hi list,
Having a problem connecting to a Samba server under Fedora Core 6. Every
time I try to connect, even from localhost, I get the message
NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME.
Samba config was done in the Redhat samba configuration tool (gnome).
I can connect with smbclient -L illuminatus -U <username> and get a list of
the shares. However when I try to connect with smbclient -U

Appleshare IP 6.2 and smbfs
Hi,
I'm having trouble connecting to an Appleshare IP 6.2 Mac that is
doing SMB file sharing from my RedHat Linux 7.2 box. I've looked and
looked and looked at many things and many SMB clients. I've tried
smbclient, smbmount, Sharity, and even just doing a mount -t smbfs. All
of them come back with something of this form:
Protocol Negotiation Failed
SMB connection failed.

Questions on connecting to AppleShare IP via Samba
Dear Support:
We have several Solaris 7 computers that need to be able to mount an
AppleShare IP server to their filemanagers. Since AppleShare IP support
SMB, I think that this is the best way to get these computers talking to
each other. To that end, I've tried to use SMB to network the two computers.
The Appleshare IP has two NICs connected to two different networks: One is

Network Trash Folder - how to do it?
Hello,I saw on Apple mashines connected to AppleShare Server that they had
something called 'Network Trash Folder'. That is if some is working on a
server volume and deletes a file from the volume, the file appears in user's
Trash on his Desktop (but?it is really placed on the server in volume's
special folder called 'Network Trash Folder'). So he can restore the file if

How to compile SSH on Jaguar (Mac OS X), technical question
Thanks to all the help I got in writing my HOW TO, im am getting closer
to isuue it.
I have just seen a file called:
/System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/sshHelper
I wonder what will break, if I disable Apples own OpenSSH
implementation. Would FileSharing not work anymore? Any workarounds
known?
Thanks for help,

Apple Share Client / NT Server Login Problems
I am wondering if anyone has seen this behavior with an AppleShare
Client 3.8.3 and an NT Server set up as a Macintosh File Server. I
am not sure of the specifics on the NT Server. After clients log onto
the server and enter their Username and passwords and then submit,
the log on procedure locks up. A force quit with Apple+Option+Esc
quits the client and then the share is mounted on the

some win2K machines get "incorrect username/password" error
A recent update was made to our "standard image" for new computers. It is for win2K.
These new computers cannot connect to a Samba 3 server running a simple smb.conf.
(Just for the sake of full disclosure, the same exact symptom is happening also with an old appleshare ip server offering SMB)
The slightly older win2K machines have no problem connecting.

Access Suddenly Cut Off to Samba Shares
Hi.
I'm hoping some samba genius has a clue about what's happening on my system.
I am using Mandrake 10 "Community Release". It comes with Samba 3.0.2. I have
been using it without problems for two weeks, and before that I had Mandrake
10 betas and Release Candidates running on the same machine.
Today, all of a sudden, I can't access any of my Samba shares over my

Massive confusion
I'm probably thinking way too hard on this... but I've already got a
headache.
I've setting up a VPN for a client between two sites. Someone had
recommended vtun, so I gave it a try. I was VERY put off by the lack of
decent documentation. I _think_ I got a VPN set up between the two sites,
but it wasn't working right and I gave up because the documentation sucked.
So, then I

Samba + Mac OS 9
Hi guys,
Is there anything out of the ordinary I have to do for an OS 9 Mac to be
able to talk to samba? When I try "connect to server" (or something
like that), it doesn't matter in what format I enter the IP address - I
simply cannot connect to it.
Thanks

FYI Appleshare IP 6.0 has SMB support
FYI There may soon be an alternative to running netatalk and samba to
allow users of Macs and PCs to access the same drive.
Anyone who wants to try a public beta can go to:
http://www.apple.com/appleshareip/text/downloads.html
Of course the Linux solution will probably run faster and on cheaper
hardware, but it's an alternative for those that might need it.

Massive difference in query times on OSX and Linux
I have a 1.7GB index with 440818 documents. Queries that take 0.23846
seconds on my MacBook pro take an indefinite period of time on a
Fedora Core 4 EC2 instance. Five minutes and counting...I''m using
Ferret 0.11.3. I don''t see any errors in the logs.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

an extended period of time for machine and software upgrades. During this
time mail to the lists will be bounced with a message stating the server
