winbind: group name doesn't map to a SID, but gid does
I'm using winbind v3.0.22 on Debian Linux as a source for nss info.
I have a group that was once known by winbind, but is no more:
------ beging shell except ------
# ls -ld ./
drwxrws--- 10 root $MND000-TT227MV5K24I 4096 2006-05-10 15:41 ./

------ end shell except ------
It must have been known, as I was the one who chgrp'ed the dir
originally.
I know what the group name is

winbind can see some groups but not others
Hello,
I followed the steps at
http://www.enterprisenetworkingplanet.com/netos/article.php/3487081
for adding a v3.0.21a samba and winbindd server to a MsAD domain and
configuring nsswitch.conf to find passwd and group info from winbind.
This seems to have worked out fine, except that I can't 'see' or
'recognize' certain groups via getent or via wbinfo -g.
E.g. I can see the

winbind nss info = sfu is not so much working
with samba 3.0.22, I'm trying to integrate a linux box with Microsoft AD
by using winbind for authentication as well as for the source of nss info.
When winbind is configured to use its own local id maps, everything
works fine.
But when i configure winbind to use 'ad' as the source of nss info,
authentication fails, 'getent' commands return no results, and
'wbinfo -r

win2k domain-less client failing to authenticate when securit y=domain
Hi Jonathan,
Yep, samba sends the domain name as well as the username to the domain
controller, and what I think happens is the NT controller sees that the
domainname passed is NOT his domain, checks his list of trusted domains,
doesn't find it, and says sayonara buddy... I am assuming that 'SATURN' is
the netbios name of the win2k client machine? I'm not real clear on how

how to make 'winbind nss info = sfu' work in v >= 3.0.26a
There is an instance of Ms.Active Directory that has had the 'Services
For Unix' applied.
I use winbind v3.0.24 to get user/group info from that Ms.Active directory
instance like so:
-------- begin smb.conf snippet: ------------
security = ADS
realm = mydomain.com
workgroup = MYDOMAIN
winbind enum groups = yes
winbind enum users = yes
winbind nested groups = yes
winbind nss info = sfu

winbind can get uid and gid from sfu, but not homedir or loginshell
I have winbind v3.0.26a running on ubuntu server v7.10 (gutsy).
I intend to get user & group info from MsActiveDirectory.
However, when I type:
getent passwd somerandomuser
I get the uid and gid for the user, as recorded in the msad schema by
virtue of sfu, but the homedir and loginshell that are returned are like
what "winbind nss info = template" would return by default:

smb.conf(5) manpage suggestion re. idmap backend
suggestion for minor improvement of the smb.conf manpage in the context
of the 'idmap backend' parameter. At least as of v3.0.22 the manpage says:
Finally, using the idmap_ad module, the UID and GID can directly be
retrieved from an Active Directory LDAP Server that supports an
RFC2307 compliant LDAP schema. idmap_ad supports "Services for Unix"

problem using 'winbind nss info =' statement
When winbind is configured without the 'winbind nss info =' statement
(i.e. such that winbind maintains its own local map of SIDs -> UID/GIDs),
the following works fine:
# cd ~detertj
# getent passwd detertj
detertj:x:10008:10000:detertj:/home/MSOE/detertj:/bin/bash
but when i try to make winbind use sfu for the mapping of SID ->
UID/GID, username lookups are

winbind nss info : how does it handle multiple values?
It looks to me like the 'winbind nss info' parameter is designed to be a
space-separated list of values. I say this because:
1) i gave it two values, separated by spaces, and testparm(1) did not
complain;
2) the man page
( http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man5/smb.conf.5.html ) gives an
example of two values.
Assuming that's true, how do the multiple values work together? Is

Too many open files, Bug 3342
We submitted bug 3342 on Dec. 20th, Too many open files. It has not
moved from the new state. So lets try here.
We have Dell Quad Xeon server that we end up rebooting about every 2-3
weeks when the number of open samba files sky rockets. The system is a
ClearCase server system. We have been monitoring this system for a few
months now and are not able to pin down a cause to this issue. The
system

replication problems in samba4 ad domain
I started with one dc, 'dc1', running samba v4.0.21, in subnet1.
I successfully added two more dc's, 'dc2' and 'dc3', both running samba v4.0.24, both in subnet2.
There are several firewalls between subnets 1 & 2.
I continued to make firewall holes on behalf of msad after I added dc's 2 & 3. I.e. when they were added, there were patterns of communication

ADS valid users can't map a share to 3.0.21
I've got samba v3.0.21 on server 'RELIANT' with security=ADS
I want MsWin XP clients, that have logged into Microsoft AD domain
'MYDOMAIN' to be able to map a drive to 'RELIANT', and to do so without
having to authenticate again. I haven't been able to do so. Here's
what happens:
the XP client doesn't prompt for authentication (which is good,

winbind fails "getent passwd eknuds"
Now I'm trying to make it so the Samba accounts can be used for user
logins as well. Unfortunately I'm having a bit of trouble with winbind.
Whenever I try to do a "getent passwd eknuds", it find the entry in the
ldap sam, but the winbind log for my domain comes up with this and the
getent displays nothing:

many servers and mobile users - "always use the most fresh user profile" - ideas?
I have a situation like below:
Samba servers in many cities; one "backup" server in the central
location that fetches user profiles each night (changes really with rsync).
Users work in many locations; sometimes one user can work in city A, and
a day later he can work in city B.
This means that they have problems with their profiles - user profile
for city A will be different from

Can one set limits on new core dump?
Hi all,
Is there anyway to limit the new core dumping panics?
Can't find anything on it. (If I'd only looked in that ...)
Was my mistake, but winbindd filled up an entire volume
and froze out every process writing to that drive.
I started it from a shell and my soft limit is
already zero. (ulimit -S -c 0)

Managed to make some progress, stuck again.
Hi,
An update on my work to integrate my Linux server (CentOS 4.3) in AD
2003.
Sorry about the long post :)
Found this page
(http://www.enterprisenetworkingplanet.com/netos/article.php/3487081)
and followed the instructions on it.
First, I made sure that the Samba installation is supporting Kerberos,
LDAP, AD and Windbind. That was OK.
I made sure that /etc/hosts contain the name of the AD

Problem with 3.0.23 upgrade from 3.0.22 with rfc2307 patch
I have upgraded one of my servers from a 3.0.22 implementation using the
rfc2307 patch I supplied some months ago to the 3.0.23 release. I am now
getting some unexplaned failures and would like some pointers as to
where to start looking.
I am getting the following logged in the samba logs when trying to start
the servers.
