1 byte writes
After migrating a particular W2K file service to Samba 3.0.21c on SuSE
9.3 Pro (a DMS with winbindd against a W2K3 ADS), the W2K clients are
suffering performance issues (in a switched LAN).
Looking at the traffic with Ethereal (latest SVN), it looks like the
client writes the data in *1 byte* pieces likes this (c=client, s=server):

Poor performance when accessing Linux from Windows XP because of too many QUERY_FILE_INFO requests
Dear all,
My question is described as follows.
Server: Linux
Samba-3.3.1
Client: Windows XP with SP3
Step1: connect to the samba server.
Step2: select a directory name ?test?. (The directory is created before testing.)
The client will send a lot of QUERY_FILE_INFO requests. According to data captured by Wireshark, I find the following phenomenon:
The client repeats exactly the same

Any chance to get 0.11.3 on windows soon ?
Hi,
I''m working on a Ferret-based application which indexes content in all
European languages. Thus, I have to deal with those funny European
characters.
After googling a bit, I decided to move on with a custom European
analyzer based on MappingFilter, as suggested in the Ferret rdoc.
Everything works fine with Ferret 0.11.3 on Mac OS X.
But this application needs to run on both

Poor performance getting lots of small files with WinXP/Win2k vs OS2
Hi,
We're doing some of performance tests with Linux Samba v3.
We're comparing WinXP/Win2k clients vs OS2 clients accessing a samba
server.
For one test, we're coping 10.000 small files.
Let's say, we run the command copy \\sambaserver\10000files\*.*
c:\data\10000files
With an OS2 client it takes 23 seconds to complete.
With an Windows client it takes 460 seconds to complete.

Many STATUS_INVALID_HANDLE
I'm in the process of trying to track down the cause of frequent Delayed
Write Failures on our network. Most seem to be from database-like files
(e.g. firefox/thunderbird sqlite files) that are stored in the users
Application Data directory. The AppData directory in our case is on a
mapped network drive and excluded from the set of files copied back and
forth as part of the roaming

strange issue with xerox printer: unable to configure driver
Hello list.
I've a strange issue with a samba 3.4.3 print server. Everything is fine
with most printers, meaning drivers are assigned on server side and
automatically distributed to the clients as expected. However, I fail to
configure a Xerox document center 7435 the same way.
When I attempt to assign a driver to the printer, from a windows client
with admin privileges, I get an

: Win XP Client does not remove directories
Hello mailinglist,
I have a strange problem, which occurs sometimes on some WinXP clients.
It is not 100% reproducable for me, but it returns regular.
The problem is, that somehow a user can't delete a directory. All files
in the directory will be removed successfully, but the directory itself
not.
Deleting with the Explorer or over the cmd-console returns in the same
result.

memory issues with samba 3.0.10
I'm still having problems with that memory issue using 3.0.10 with v.2
of the printing patch + the one line patch from Jerome Borsboom. My
production server has completely frozen a couple times in the past
couple weeks, and did so again this morning. This time before
restarting samba I removed the tdb files in /var/lib/samba/printing/*
as Jerry mentioned this might help the queue not

smb service response times + OpenVPN
Recently I had the chance to look at smb service response times over OpenVPN
using Wireshark/TShark. Here are 2 samples. In both samples a Win XP Pro
machine is connecting to a server running samba-3.3.7 and openvpn-2.0.6_9 on
FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE.

Friendly Reminder: Huge number of small files performance regression from 3.5.16 to 4.6.5 with identical smb.conf
Hello again, Jeremy and other Samba experts,
I'm sorry to be such a pain in your neck(s), but I still need your help
in looking for help trying to find out why SMB2/3.1.1 in Samba 4.6.5
performs so much worse than SMB/1.5 in Samba 3.6.15 in scenarios with a
huge number of small files.
As requested by Jeremy, I have done wireshark "pcapng" captures of the
four scenarios as

Samba Printing Extremely Slow from Windows XP
Hi,
I have setup samba server on my linux box (Fedora Core 4 with latest
samba, just updated via RHN) and has configured file sharing via samba
for this server and connecting to it from my windows xp box. So far,
everything works fine and it is very fast.
Then, I configured a printer, and shared it via samba. And, I can
see+connect to it from Windows XP and can even print. But, everything

smbd uses 10 to 15% CPU w/Vista client
For quite awhile I've noticed that smbd uses 10-15% of my CPU (Pentium
4) when nothing visible is going on. I have a couple of laptops on my
home network, and some experiments showing that powering on the Vista
laptop (other is OSX) is sufficient to raise useage from 0 to 10-15%.
The screen is locked, although 2 user accounts are logged in. Wireshark
seems to show a lot of chatter,

Long Delays Displaying Small Folders in Windows Explorer (samba-3.0.10-1 FC2)
Hi,
I'm trying to replace a windows fileserver server with a Fedora Core 2
samba server in our Windows 2000 ADS domain.
A performance problem occurs when accessing certain samba shares from
Windows Explorer on either an Windows XP or a W2K client machine. It
can take up to a minute for explorer to list files in a share folder
containing only a few files! It eventually does, but but reports
