nss and pam with ssl and sarge debian
I'm working from the samba 3 how-to and creating my own how-to so that I get everything straight in my head. I'm trying to make an exchange replacement with samba + ldap + open-xchange + cyrus + postfix + postgresql etc etc. At the minute I'm trying to find out if Sarge has ssl already enabled in it's PAM and NSS packages, instead of me trying to compile it myself. Anyone know

Problems copying some files from windows to linux
Hi, This might not be entirely samba server related, but the problem I am experiencing is affecting a planned implementation of a new Samba Server, and from the smbmount man page, it appears that this is the recommended list to reqest help - so hopefully someone might be able to assist :-). I am running a Debian Linux machine (kernel 2.6.0) with Samba 3.0.1 which will soon be replacing an

Hi, I'm trying to use rsync from Windows to Unix. I've followed the directions on : http://optics.ph.unimelb.edu.au/help/rsync/rsync_pc1.html I can see ssh running on the windows machine, because I tested it using telnet localhost 22 and I can see the result "SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_3.4p1". But when I try "$ rsync -avz -e ssh user@windowsserver::/rsync/* ." from the Linux

Profile troubles with 2.x-3.x upgrade
Hello Samba people, My goal is to upgrade our Samba 2.2.9 PDC to 3.0.6. 2.2.9 was installed from an RPM, but 3.0.6 is compiled from source. No special options except --with-prefix and other location-specific ones. We are using the typical smbpasswd back-end. So I have compiled and installed 3.0.6. I have tweaked the smb.conf to reflect what I believe are the new values for 3.x. The

Transferring FSMO Roles to Server 2008 R2 DC
Hello, As far as I know, there is no Wiki article for transferring FSMO Roles to Server 2008 R2 DC. This article’s focus is on joining a Server 2012 DC to a Samba4 domain, but it touches on the subject: https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Joining_a_Windows_Server_2012_/_2012_R2_DC_to_a_Samba_AD <https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Joining_a_Windows_Server_2012_/_2012_R2_DC_to_a_Samba_AD> I would

Group membership
I am using Samba PDC with OpenLDAP2 and smbldap-tools. As part of my logon.bat, I call a script called ifmember.exe. This script can list out the groups a user is a member of. It is reporting that my root user is a member of the group 'engr.' I don't know if this is a bug with ifmember.exe or if it's an issue in Samba or in LDAP. Here is some relevant data:

Lies wide open ...!
Being as a Windows geek tho, I consider Linux as a more powerful server operating system than Windows. When I saw OS comparison at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/compare/linux/server-security.mspx I was shocked! Showed it to a friend and he felt like being brainwashed :D lol. What do you fellows think about this? Thanks. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was

Slow Samba
I am running a Snap 4200 fileserver, which is a network appliance that uses Samba to share files on a windows network. I've been experiencing slow performance on the Snap. The issue started suddenly 5 to 6 weeks ago, so I don't think it's a performance-related problem. I SSHed into the unit and noticed some odd errors in the samba event logs. They look something like this:

smb_proc_readdir_long - ls not showing files
Hello, We are getting a baffling problem with a samba mounted drive on Redhat, mounted from a windows box. We cannot always see files in the mounted directory with ls or perl. The directory has 237 files in it. We sometimes see 197 files with ls. Sometimes we see nothing. This can happen from one try to the next (i.e. run ls, see the files, immediately run ls again and see nothing). We have
