Repository for debuginfo (CentOS 5.1)
It has been suggested (elsewhere) that, to track down the nautilus problem I reported a while back, I need to install the nautilus debuginfo rpm. However, my yum can't find it. The only repositories I have set up on my machine are these: CentOS-Base.repo CentOS-Media.repo kbs-CentOS-Extras.repo mirrors-rpmforge rpmforge.repo Do I need another one for debuginfo rpms? Thanks. mhr

CentOS 5.2 - Nautilus - file types are not associated with an action and icons are not displayed
Hi all, I use CentOS 5.2 as a desktop and the Gnome Nautilus doesn't display icons related to the file types and all associated actions ("open with") are lost. It is so bad, that the desktop shortcuts are displayed as ordinary files "Filesystem.desktop" or "openoffice.org-1.9-calc.desktop", and when I click on them, the Nautilus wants to know what it should

Startup programs in specific workspaces
I have a specific method of using my five GNOME workspaces to perform certain categories of tasks when I log in on a machine, so I just had a thought. Is there a way to specify, say from a login script, for an application to start up in a particular workspace, preferably with a specific "screen" location? Or is this a gnome question? Thanks. mhr

Curiosity when installing CentOS 5.1 in addition to W98 & WXP
I got half way through an installation of CentOS on a box that has Window$ 98 in the first partition and Window$ XP in the second, where CentOS was designated for partitions 3 (/boot - 128MB) and 4 (/) and had some strange results. During the install, I changed the default OS to boot to Window$ (because I rarely use this machine, but others who don't have a clue use Wxx), but then while the

Flaky graphics - need help nailing down the cause
This morning I noticed that my (new in July) monitor was behaving strangely. At first, it was odd parts of web page graphics that didn't show up unless I scrolled up and down in the window, and then they weren't displayed with any consistency. Then I noticed that the screensaver failed to appear (computer was locked, but graphics never showed on the monitor). I tried running mplayer to

Can't print PDFs or PSs in CentOS 5.0
For some reason, when I try to print any graphic PDF (or a PS file made from said graphic), it kills my Minolta 1100 laser printer, and I have to cancel the job, disable the printer and turn the printer off and on as many times as it takes to clear its buffer of the trash. I'm running CentOS 5.0 and have tried Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 for Linux; I have also tried printing the pdf to a file

Problems logging out....
I just started having some trouble logging out from my CentOS 5.1 system. For some reason, when I try to log out, the log out program hangs. This happens whether I click on the "Log Out" button or wait for the timeout. When I looked, I somehow (I forget how) found out that the clock applet would not go away. However, when I separately killed the clock applet, the session still refused

Can't print a pdf?
I just had a strange occurrence. I was printing out some PDFs and I pulled one down off the web (my wireless bill) and tried to print page 1. My browser properly fired up AR9, but nothing printed. I tried agian, still nothing. I saved the file, opened it with the Document Viewer and it can't print the file either. I tried opening it with GIMP, and it gets this error: Opening

Lost file associations, too - urgent
I just returned from a week's vacation and brought my CentOS 5.0 system back up, updated it, and somehow it has lost all the .doc file associations. These used to be associated with the OpenOffice writer, but that's now gone. ACtually, all the "open with" associations are gone (rtf's now think they should be opened by the text editor!). I'm not sure exactly what the

Volume keys don't work
A side effect that I just noticed is that the volume up/down controls keys no longer seem to function at all. I reset the keyboard shortcuts to use them, but even with the whole volume control panel enabled, they don't do a thing. What did I break? I don't remember seeing this one before.... mhr

Firewall for virtual machines
I realize I'm not getting a lot of questions answered here lately, and I'm going to presume that this is for legitimate reasons (i.e., people don't know or are too busy to think about it), not because they seem stupid (if they do, please tell me, on the list or privately). I run Windows as a VMWare guest on top of my CentOS host, and I generally have not used a firewall on the guest.

Understanding iptables
In following up on the rsh "problem" I was having earlier, I decided to try out the suggestion Felipe sent about using system-config-securitylevel-tui to open up ports 513 and 514, but that doesn't seem to do the job, either. # iptables -L Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination RH-Firewall-1-INPUT all -- anywhere anywhere

POSIX semaphores in CentOS 5.1?
According to the man pages for sem_wait, etc., POSIX semaphores are available in Linux 2.6 (with the right NTPL threading in glibc). However, I have a program that compiles just fine but won't link because it can't find the library for the semaphore operations. What am I missing? I ran a find and grep through all the libc's on the system and they turned up nothing: $ find /lib

ntfs-3g question
This is probably a dumb question, but I've looked around and I can't find anything on this. I'm using ntfs-3g now, from rpmforge, to access my M$ Window$ disks for offline backup and other such menial tasks, and I noticed that the ntfs file systems are not mounted automatically, but I have to mount them manually as ntfs-3g devices. I _thought_ when I installed the whole dkms-fuse and
