Samba + LDAP over the WAN
Since we're on the subject of Samba over the WAN....
(BTW, I'm running three offices with a Samba 3.0.9 PDC and two Samba 3.0.9 BDCs over an FreeSwan based WAN and it works just fine. The WINS server is a must in my book though.)
Last Thursday and Friday, one of the remove office's WAN lines went down. While the outages were significant, nothing major happened because of it. But,

Hi,
i've just migrated from nt4 to samba 3.0.10-1.4E.9 with tdbsam, running

i am having trouble renaming computers in the domain.
If i try this from the windows workstation (XP Professional) i get
access denied. I use "root" or administrator which is

Xp Home hack + Domain join
Hello fellows,
Does anyone of you has found the hack to permit win xp home edition to
join a domain controller.
I found somewhere on the net a software that does this.
But it cost 145 $ US, so like the upgrade... ( the only difference in
that i will not give the money to Bill Gates)
My problem is with the password modification.
Every times someone does change his password, he has to go onto the

share with no authentication
Hello,
I got this problem:
I want to mount a directory without providing a login/password [indicaf$].
I thought that "guest ok = yes" would be sufficient.
But it not works.
What option is the right one to open a share to everyone without a login box in windows ?
Thanks.
This is my smb.conf (samab v3.0.7):

Openldap for PDC
I have been testing with openldap_2.2.13-2 and have experience on 2
occasions lockups where the ldap server does not respond (slapcat will
just hang). I have upgraded to openldap_2.2.13-4.
Is there a recommended version of openldap for SambaPDC?
Does anyone have a system in production using openldap_2.2.13-2 or
openldap_2.2.13-4?
I'm currently using samba3-20b any recommendations for a

How to prevent users from deleting users from domain via usrmgr.exe ???
hi,
weird thing:
i thought when commenting out "delete user script" and "ldap delete dn"
nobody is able to delete users from the domain.
what happens: users are deleted, to be more specific their samba
attributes are deleted but not their posix values.
i won't let our admins delete users from our domain becaus we have
another management to add/delete users to/from a

Winbind Understanding
I would like some clarification on Winbind's capabilities. I have winbind
up and fully functional. I can use wbinfo -g, wbinfo -u, etc..
I would like to use winbind to correlate sids to uid on filesystems
mounted with smbfs or cifs. In reading further I see lots of information
about doing this on EXT3 (or Linux filesystems that support ACL).
Perhaps, I had misunderstood the purpose of

Precedence of access parameters
hello all,
im trying to figure out the precedence of security parameters in
smb.conf. i know that settings in specific shares take precedence over
settings in global; 'invalid users' takes precidence over all other
security settings. but others im not so clear on, such as: does 'read
only' take precedence over 'write list'? or do later entries simply
overwrite earlier

Values for Create Mask?
We're running Samba 3.0.4.0 on AIX 5.2 and I am using the create mask
value in the smb.conf to try and set the default permissions but I can't
seem to get the values right.
I want the default permissions to be rwxrwx---
Setting the mask to 770 gets me rwxrw----
I've tried several options but can't seem to get the execute value on
the group.
If someone can either let me know

Default behavior of setting SUID bit in directories.
Hello.
In the Samba by Example book theres a section called "Effect of
Setting File and Directory SUID/SGID Permissions Explained", that shows
an example of the effect of SUID/SGID bits.
The SGID bit when setted in directories makes the files inherit the
group owner, but I couldn't make the SUID bit on directories work,
making files inherit the owner.

file locking question
Hi all,
If I have a linux server running samba for filesharing and I use NFS to
make these shares available on another linux server that also runs samba
to share the same shares will the locking still work properly?
I can use this to get around an issue with multiple authentication
domains and I suspect NFS is less chatty than SMB anyway so will mean a
peformance win as well across the WAN.

methods to synchronize tdb files between hosts
I use winbind+AD for single sign-on to many Linux machines,
and the Linux hosts automount home directories on one Linux file server.
I am faced with a need to synchronize the *.tdb files on the file server
with all the Linux machines for consistent UID-to-loginID mapping.
Has this been tried by sharing the /var/lib/samba/ over nfs with the
other servers? Are there any pitfalls?
Has this been

Logon script with Administrator rights
I am using a .bat logon script (the same for all users) and it avoids that I
have to configure each user manually. But now I have to run a command that
requires administrator rights on two files, and the command I write in the
.bat file doesn't work.
Do you know how to run the logon script as the local machine Administrator?
After all, the logon script is on the server and only me can

I have a Samba PDC on my Suse 9.3 machine serving up to 25 clients
with a OpenLdap backend. The samba user password also *sync's with the
LDAP Password and the Local User password*. All Samba users also have a
local user account which is used by IMAP Server Accounts & Cyrus
Authentication on the same machine. (So, One Password to email and samba

Samba 3.0.22: share be r/w for LDAP-authenticated users, r/o for anonymous
Hi there,
we need to implement the following scenario:
- Samba server 3.0.22 (NOT acting as a domain controller; we don't use
Windows networking domains)
- users use Linux and Windoze
- anonymous users accessing a certain share should be granted read-only
access
- successfully authenticated users should be given read-write access
- authentication should be performed against an LDAP that
