Problems with Word 200 and Samba 2.2.6 - RESOLVED
Found this issue in the list archives, with no resolution. I think I found
one.
We were having this exact problem, and we resolved it by removing
\*.doc\*.DOC\ from our smb.conf "veto oplocks" list, and adding
\*.tmp\*.TMP\. Leaving the *.tmp files out of the veto list was causing Word
2000 to say that a file was currently locked by 'another user', even when
the file was just

Issue with reshare shares
Hi there,
we have a customer with some old Windows 98 stuff. The
network has been migrated to a 2008 domain and Windows 98 won't
authenticate (and thus can not access shares, also all computer names
(DC's / fileservers) are longer than 8 characters).
Figured I would
mount the shares on the fileservers on a linux box (ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64
bit server) and then export them again through

Posix acls problem
I'd very much appreciate some help with a rather major problem I'm having.
I have a Dell 6450 quad Xeon Processor machine with 8GB of RAM and 1TB
of disk (RAIDed with an Adaptec 5400S RAID controller). It is running
samba (2.2.8) to server up files to around 2300 Windows 2000 machines.
The machine was originally installed and configured around September 2002.
It had been running

Resharing a Remotely Mounted CIFS share
Greetings.
I am attempting to configure a SAMBA server to act as a "gateway" server
and am having some issues. Any assistance or clarification would be
greatly appreciated.
Our company has need to connect to remote CIFS server, running SAMBA,
hosted by a remote company. To do this, I am attempting to mount the
remote share to a local server and then reshare this back out to our

Analysing Character Strings for subsequent frequency analysis
Hi
I'm trying to get to grips with R and establish R as a teaching medium
in my secondary school. I would like to use R to analyse text so I can
produce frequency analysis of the text for subsequent examination of
ciphers. I can produce code in VBA but I am struggling when writing in R
to examine each character. There must be a clear method using the
vectorised format of R. Furthermore,

Mounting a Samba Share in /etc/fstab
Hey all,
As most of you know, I've been having problems (hopefully solved by now, won't know until friend is
able to reshare his box) with SAMBA over the internet.
On my local area network, I am using SAMBA for a one way connection just fine. my question is as
follows.
Can I make an fstab entry so I can mount the XP share whenever I boot? The reason I ask is because

Connecting Solaris 10 + samba + Mac OS X Open Directory
Hi all,
I've recently run into a situation whereby I need samba to tackle a
task. It is complicated by multi-vendor infrastructure. I am hoping
that someone here has the knowledge and experience to say:
"been there, done that...here is how..."
To give some background to the architecture (slightly exotic)...

Samba File Locking Problem
Hi,
I have a situation in the office where I temporarily need to provide
additional clients access to a share on a Windows 2000 Professional box.
2000 Pro seems to only allow 5 clients to connect to a share and there is no
faclity to allow more as best I can tell. Upgrading isn't really an option
and as I said, this is a temporary need.
I have a linux box as a gateway so I decided to map the

RPC server not available when windows client attempts to join samba AD
I am installing a new Samba 4.2 Active Directory server on CentOS 7. I
followed the Wiki instructions on how to create the server. I am using
sernet-samba 4.2 binaries. Everything seems to be OK on the Linux side but
I cannot get any windows client to successfully join the domain. Each
attempt returns the following error message "RPC Server in not available".

net rpc vampire problems
I am trying to vampire the account database from my NT 4 DC (that has
SP6A installed). The DC's name is nemesis. The samba computer's name
is mjollnir.
The directions seem trivial:
1.) Join the Domain as a BDC with:
net rpc join -S nemesis -W WHSD -U Administrator
this worked fine and I can see the computer listed in server manager
with type "Windows NT Backup"
2.) Run

SMBMOUNT: process freezes on file copy
Thanks Urban. I am now convinced that this problem is being caused by the
reshare of the Novell drive. I have ended up copying the data (around 6Gb,
400,000 files) to the Windows 2000 server from the Novell server. I then
mounted the Windows 2000 share using smbmount. Copying this has been a
dream with no sign of any problems at all.
I think we will have to put this down to the MS Gateway

Installing Samba on Solaris
Hi,
Last time I wrote, I recieved a follow-up from someone who told me to "read
the manual". Since then I've discovered that we can't access the samba
system files from the MACs with samba on Solaris. I've explained this to
the supervisor and he feels nfs will be fine. (Although the file system is
mounted on to a Solaris system from an Xserver which means we'll have to

happens. It also appears that somewhere in steps 1 and 2 above Word sends
a request to turn off the read, write, and execute bits for the owner of the
file. When you look at this filesystem after the attempted save the
original file does indeed have these bits cleared (i.e. the user has no
read, write,or execute permissions on the file), and that I think is why
the error is being generated.

setuids mount option broke
Hello,
I'm trying to export a /home/ partition for multiple users, using
Samba and the setuids option. My goal is to deliver emails into
$HOME/.Maildir/ for each user. So I mount the share as user "root",
hoping that each user will be able to use their own home directory (just
like an NFS /home/ mount). (This feature depends on the Unix extensions.)
I have the

Centos 5.0 Printer Reshare
Hi,
I have a number of networked printers configured on my server. Some are
mounts from other SMB servers, some are directly connected via
socket://ip_address:9100.
I can't find how to allow other Unix/Linux machines to use these printers.
I need to re-share them for use by these other machines.
Any ideas or direction to look?
Best Regards,

Testing EXTERNAL AUTHENTICATION
Hi.
I'm trying to test EXTERNAL AUTHENTICATION in Dovecot. To do this I first
configured Thunderbird and Opera to use my server, neither of them were
successful. As a result I contacted both organisations to enquire if they
supported EXTERNAL AUTHENTICATION in their products. Thunderbird
responded and said yes. However, on closer inspection my contact at
Thunderbird identified

Working example of mount.cifs -o setuids
Hi.
How do I use the option 'setuids'?
Logic suggests that it's intended for root mounts (with the ability to
chown from client), but everal threads on this list say the opposite.
Anyway, I can't make it work with or without 'valid users = root' or
'admin users = foo' in smb.conf. I tried samba 3.6.9 and 4.2
Please can someone post a working example of smb.conf,
