'add/change/delete share command'(s) in smb.conf
Hello.
I need to allow one of my users to add & delete shares on my Samba server
through the 'server manager' applet on his client .
This same user also writes some files to the same Samba server.
I don't want the files that he writes to be owned/written by 'root' .
The way I understand the 'add share command' currently, this is not
possible.
Am I missing

'multi-layered' authentication
I need to allow [read] access to a Samba server using both IP filtering &
UserIDs .
For a given list of IP subnets, any user should have access.
Outside these 'trusted' subnets, I need to do User authentication.
I can handle the User authentication OK in several ways.
However, I don't see any way to do the 'short circuit' allow for some IPs,
then use User authentication

hosting library (ie. PVCS) on Samba
Hello.
I believe that I've done my due diligence in researching what info. is
currently available on this issue.
I have been jacking with this for days, & believe that I have tried all
possible solutions.
I am basically trying to move a [Merant] PVCS installation from an OS/2
file server to a SuSE/Samba file server.
This installation consists of 'standard' source archives,

Free space/capacity displayed as garbage...
Dear,
I'm having some strange problems with Samba.
I have shared a linux folder on my samba and have mapped it to a drive letter in Windows XP (I also tried with Windows 2000).
When I right click my mapped drive and click on properties to view the free space and capacity, I get all garbage as can be seen
from the screenshot at:

WINS client 'ttl'
Hello.
So, my Samba server, as a WINS client, registers itself with the [Windows]
WINS server.
Then, when (how often) does it refresh its WINS registration ?
I have a problem in that the Windows WINS server is losing its WINS db,
then my customers can't find my Samba server.
Is there a way to instruct my Samba servers to re-register more often ?
Thanks.

Is there a maximum number of shares samba can serve?
I am being asked to determine the feasibility of serving hundreds
(300-400) of directories as individual shares instead of sharing a single
parent directory.
Personally, I don't think this is a good idea. Clients will go from
having a single connection to a single share to 50-300 connections to
multiple shares. That can't be good for performance or load.

'username map' --> password(s)
Hello.
One of the advertised uses of the 'username map' smb.conf parameter is:
'to map multiple users to a single username so that they can more easily
share files.'
This sounds great, & is what I've wanted to do more than once.
However, there is the issue of the username mapping taking place before
the authentication.
This requires the individual users to give a

deleting a file
Has anyone observed this behavior when deleting a file?
I had a user map a Samba share to his WIN2K machine and use the Windows
Explorer delete function to delete a rather large file (600M). Windows
prompted him in the usual manner: 'Are you sure you want to delete this
file?' (By the way it was the actual "delete" warning, not the recycle
bin warning.) In the Explorer window,

After Winbind Login, Mounting SMB Home Dirs?
Hi list,
How would I go about mounting samba home directories from a Windows file share after a user authenticates with winbind?
Here's my situation: I have a lab of 25 Linux boxes that currently use their own system for authentication on a campus that uses Windows Domain Controllers for student logins everywhere else. I have successfully set up domain logins using winbind on the Linux

POSTSCRIPT PRINTING THROUGH SAMBA AND LEXMARK Z22
Hi,
i have the lexmark Z22 printer. If I print a test page through RedHat's
printtool in .ps format it works fine, but not ascii.
So, i'm wondering how I can change samba so it prints it in a .ps format
through the share, I assume that's probably the problem.

Problems when using cupsaddsmb
Hi!
First of all, I have to admit that it is my first post on this list, so
please be lenied toward me, if I don't obey some of the rules ;-) I'll
try my best :-)
I am just trying to get my samba-server work as a print server by using
CUPS. The OS of the server is Gentoo Linux and I'm using samba-3.0.9-r1.
The clients are win 2k/xp home. I can already see my shares (files and

Printing Problems (Updated)
I have been struggling with samba and printing. My original post is at
http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/msg72613.html. I since then, I built a
2nd box, but this time it is a samba 3.0.0 box. The same thing happens on
the 3.0.0 box.
The update is that this occurs on the lexmark printer using the Lexmark
Z22/32 drivers. If I use a HP driver or a different driver, the job goes to

Linux vs. Windows SMB buffering
Hi all,
In our office we use a program that makes many small writes to a file. We
have been trying to use this program with our NAS, which hosts a Samba
share on the network. However, the performance of the program is
staggeringly slow on Window 7, 8.1, and 10.
To make the problem easily repeatable, I created a small C++ program to
just write 1 million lines to a file:

XP Pro / Redhat / Samba Printer Suggestions
I am looking at buying a new home office printer and wondered what you all
might suggest.
My current printer is a very inexpensive Canon BubbleJet, and I find it
clogs frequently, has very small ink tanks, and the Maintenance functions
from my XP clients does not work with samba, requiring I switch the printer
cable to an XP machine for maintenance.
My config is this:
