locked file that shouldn't be
Running 3.0.4 on FreeBSD 5.2.1. Today there is a regular text file that appears to be locked. It is an ini file for an application. The file can be opened with notepad but if you try to save it an error message pops up... "The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file." smbstatus does not show this file as being open and it is mode 777.

Locked files that stay open after a PC crash
Hi, How should you deal, as an administrator/root, with locked files that stay open after a PC crash and the user can't access them any more. For example: The PC crashes and the user restart. MS-Outlook complains that it can't open its outlook.pst file, that is on a samba share, with the proper read/write access and the user can't get any mail. As root you do a smbstatus -u and you

xls file locked for editing by unknown user
I'm not sure that this is the right place to ask about this, but one of my users is having a problem with her files, specifically excel files which she is editing with openoffice. I suspect that she is closing down her PC without logging out or something and so appears to be still logged in. She is using Vista and the server is a Debian Lenny box. Whenever she tries to access the files on

'document has been locked for editing by another user' - medium latency / limited bw connection issues?
Hi, I hope some of you have been in a similar situation and can shed some light on this: I have a VPN connection to a Samba 4.1.4 server and when I use Word 2010 on a W7 client to open an existing file I often get the following error: "document.docx has been locked for editing by another user." I should clarify that the document is not in use by anyone (confirmed by smbstatus), and

Locked files stay locked - copy operation from XP to Samba fails
Hi, When trying to copy 5000+ files from a client PC to a Samba server I have the following problem. Halfway during the operation it hangs on always the same file. Windows XP (SP1) gives: Unable to copy file [filename]. Specified network name is no longer available. (I had to translate this from Dutch, so it is not the exact message). When checking with smbstatus I get this:

File Locked
Hi, I've got a Word document on a Samba share that I can't rename, overwrite or open. Attempting to rename it gives: Cannot rename Filename: There has been a sharing violation. Attempting to open it gives: Filename.doc is locked for editing by 'another user'. This is on a NAS box so I can't say which Samba version it is. There are no temporary files in the share to show who

User not reported on file locked message
I have a very small problem. Thanks for any suggestions. Say user1 logs onto a Windows XP workstation and opens file1. Then, if user2 attempts to open the file from another workstation the following message is displayed: "file1 is locked for editing by ''" Problem: *user1* is not displayed between the single quotes. However, say user1 logs onto a Win98 workstation and

smbstatus -B segmentation fault
When using Samba 3.0.23b (slightly old, I know) on CentOS 4.4, smbstatus -B fails with a segmentation fault. smbstatus works, and tdbdump is able to dump brlock.tdb and locking.tdb without any errors (which is not what I expected). Here's the backtrace (non-ASCII characters replaced with 'X'): #0 0x0017fa2c in memcpy () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 #1 0x0029b19f in tdb_write

Removing printer drivers?
I have installed windows printer drivers and it worked but now I need to remove several. I have tried everything I can find but nothing will get rid of them. Using "remove" from a winxp machine in "server properties" won't work. It claims they are in use. I'm not sure what "in use" means. Nothing is printing and the drivers should be local. I've

File Locking
Hi, I'm running smbd 2.2.8. I'm a little green when it comes to file locking with samba. I have two users that access a single data file on a FreeBSD box. It's a moneydance data file and obviously it gets messed-up if two users are writing to it at the same time. Is there a way with samba to stop a second instance of the file from being opened, something like a "File In

Locked prf files within Roaming Profiles
Hello everybody, we have the following problem here: We've set up a complete samba domain (based on 3.0.20 now) which is running very fine including ldap backend. But we've still problems using roaming profiles (especially prf*tmp) files. We already tested the veto oplock directive with /prf*.tmp/ and even /*.tmp/ but these files remain always locked. Only "root" can delete

Smbstatus shows same share for same client several times - related to locking issues?
Hello, we frequently face locking issues with office applications and documents on samba shares. The office applications claim that the document is locked and hence no write access is possible. I can check on the samba server that there is no concurrent access/locking from other computers or users. It looks like the same user holds some lock and is denied to access the document because it?s
