Changing/fixing machine names
I think I found some of my cutover problems. I found a couple Win98 machines which had the same name for user and machine names. While it never seemed to be an issue in the Netware realm, under Samba, it appears to have undesirable results. Although the machines have been renamed, there still seem to be strange problems. Any ideas on where to fix/change/clean whatever to remove the machine

winbind auth using ADS with domain trusts
In reading the documentation I havn't found anything that covers the use of winbindd when authenticating against one domain (lets call it 'A') while also allowing users from a domain trusted by A (lets call it 'B'). My linux box is a member server in domain A which is a new domain we are working on transitioning to. We are not renaming because 2k server doesn't have that

AD domain with SDMS issues & LDAP Idmap backend
Hi, I have been trying to join a Samba Domain member server to the AD and use LDAP for IDMAP storage. I have run into many strange issues and I was hoping someone can please take time to clarify things for me. I have read quite a bit (I own both the Samba books by Terpstra) and done a lot of Google searching. I think part of my problem is the unusual setup I have, as all the examples in the

IPSec VPNs: to gif or not to gif
I will shortly be replacing a couple of proprietary VPN boxes with a FreeBSD solution. Section 10.10 of the Handbook has a detailed description of how to do this. However I remember a lot of discussion about a year ago about whether the gif interface was necessary to set up VPNs like this or whether it was just a convenience, for "getting the routing right". A number of people said

inner margins for lattice
I would like to control the inner margins of a lattice graph. The graph is a single superposed panel, but there is too much white space around the data for my liking. I've played around with some of the layout options, but so far have found only how to control outer margins. R version 2.7.1 (2008-06-23) MS Vista OS Thanks for any help. Todd Hatfield

IPFW: combining "divert natd" with "keep-state"
I've been using ipfw for a while to create a router with NAT and packet filtering, but have never combined it with stateful filtering, instead using things like "established" to accept incoming TCP packets which are part of a conversation initiated from the "inside". I'd like to move to using keep-state/check-state to get tighter filtering and also to allow outgoing

AD4Unix & Samba-3.0.20b+winbind (UPDATE)
The nss_ldap has some performance problems and doesn't have any caching features that windbind does. What I was aways wondering is does IDMAP write UID/GID derived from SID to the extended schema in AD? Can winbindd use this extended schema, instead of using nss_ldap? -----Original Message----- From: samba-bounces+letz_samba=realmspace.com@lists.samba.org

Pegasus - Crashes on Sending
I'm running Pegasus 4.31 via the latest version of Wine on Ubuntu's Breezy Badger version. I've looked at the Wine applications page for bugs etc and Pegasus crashing on sending mail is documented. It shows as bug 1611 and shows as resolved but I cannot fathom out what the resolution is. My Pegasus appears to run fine except when I press the send button whereupon pegasus

Tabulating using arbitrary numbers of factors
Dear R-help, First of all, thank you VERY much for any help you have time to offer. I greatly appreciate it. I would like to write a function that, given an arbitrary number of factors from a data frame, tabulates the number of occurrences of each unique combination of the factors. Cleary, this works: > table(horse, date, surface) <SNIP> , , surface = TURF

Beginner Question on Persp()
I recently downloaded R for Windows, running on Win XP. I'm trying to create a perspective plot but not having any luck after reading the R manual and several examples found on the Internet. I have a 100 x 100 matrix of Z data as a tab-delimited text file exported from Minitab. I read this in to R using read.delim; this seemed to go ok. I created X and Y using seq() to get 100 divisions

Ben Bolker's '‘emdbook’ Package , rbetabinom
Hello, I am using rbetabinom ( to generate beta binomial random variables) function available in the "emdbook"package written by Professor. Ben Bolker for my research study. I have no questions with this function. However, I am looking for the theoretical method/algorithm of the function "rbetabinom " . FreeBSD-Update + Sendmail
I have been updating my FreeBSD systems for many years by updating and building from source. For the FreeBSD 9.2 cycle, I decided to use freebsd-update for binary update instead. I use Sendmail + Cyrus-SASL and the freebsd-update process only installed a 'bare bones' binary. How do I compile just Sendmail from source so that it uses my /etc/make.conf for the smtp_auth components?

Rails and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA): any downsides?
Hey folks, I like what I''m reading about improved performance via Service Oriented Architecture for my Rails app. Stepping in that direction will require some code reorganization, though. Has anyone regretted the time invested in Rails SOA or suffered any other drawbacks that might -- from a business perspective -- have disinclined them from going SOA? Lille -- You received this
