CentOS 4 DNS Server not listening
I installed CentOS 4 on a new box to use as a DNS server. It is a basic
server install.
I configured named and it is all up and running fine. It just isn't
listening on Port 53. It also (obviously) does not respond to DNS
requests. Requests from the machine itself are processed just fine, so
the service is working. It just can't be used by other machines. Not
good for a public DNS

Samba/LDAP XP Authentication Weirdness
Samba 2.2.8a, RH7.3
I have successfully connected machines running XP to the samba controlled
domain.
There are 3 XP machines, each with only one user designated as a power user
(ie domain\username power user). Each can log into any of the three
machines without a problem.
Now I am trying to log a different person into any of these machines and I
get the message "System Could Not Log

USERMGR 'A device attached to the system is not functioning'
Hey everyone,
I've got a Samba server running with an LDAP backend, and for the most
part it works great. The only issue I'm having is that when I attempt
to use USERMGR.exe on the windows side I get this (typical Microsoft)
error:
"A device attached to the system is not functioning"
I'm running Samba 3.4.5, and OpenLDAP 2.4.21 on FreeBSD 8.0

Vim differences between C4 and C5
I have installed CentOS 4.5 and 5 on 2 separate machines, and both have
default installs of vim-enhanced on each of them.
I noticed that I can get syntax highlighting as a regular user, sudo and
as root in C4.5. In C5 I only get highlighting as a regular user.
I diff'ed my /etc/vimrc files between each install there is no changes
and neither root ~ has a .vimrc file.
I had put "# vim:

CentOS 5 dual boot with XP success
Hello. A happy, error-free report about my experiences last night. Only
one small inconvenience in the install.
I have an AMD Athlon64 3700+ in a MSI Neo2-F motherboard (Via K8T800 Pro
chipset), with a WD Raptor SATA drive and an older WD 80gig IDE drive.
The system has 1 gig of RAM and a CDROM (not DVD). The on-board network
is a Realtek 8169/8110 chip. My video is a 6800GT (AGP).

Help with user/domain Management fm Windows side
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Back-end is LDAP.
What are some good techniques for Domain management from the windows
side? I've got usermgr.exe and svrmgr.exe but:
1. I don't know what functions these tools are or are not supposed to be
able to perform on a Samba domain as yet.
2. I can delete users but I cannot seem to add them or modify them.

AW: W2K RAS Server in Samba 3.0.0 Domain
I patched samba to always return ACCESS_GRANTED for testing.
So I came to this:
IASSAM.LOG
[556] 23:23:53:671: Inserting attribute msNPAllowDialin.
[556] 23:23:53:671: Successfully retrieved per-user attributes.
Dialin now "only" fails with "Dialin not allowed for user", but I'm not able
to set it in UserMgr.
Is it difficult to map this attribute?

Sick and wrong!
Karanbir,
No one should ever have to go through that. I am sorry to hear that
someone has done that evil deed to you. May they be forgiven, but know the
pain that they have caused you and repent of their sins. And if there's
something I can do to help, please let me know.

Problem with sambaMunged Dial
I've had a problem since I had installed samba with ldap support.
It's impossible deleting and managing [ex.: add user to a group] the
user; only with smbldap-tools.
When I try to manage new user with usermgr.exe, who's added the log
tell me:

error: sambaMungedDial: value #0 invalid per syntax (Success)

NetBIOS Hostname
I was setting up Samba on an OpenSuSE 10.3 i386 computer.
At the last minute I decided to enter a NetBIOS Hostname, big mistake.
A message popped up warning me that entering a NetBIOS Hostname would
create a new UID and Clients may no longer be able to connect.
The Message was correct....
However, (Design Flaw) at that point there was no way for me to back out or
cancel, so the deed was done.

Password Aging/Expiration in Samba 3?
Is password aging/expiration a functional feature in
Samba 3? I have compiled and installed the alpha 12
release and while I can set password aging in the
account policies via NT's account manager, Samba 3
does not seem to be honoring it.

yum update for 5.0 ==> 5.1
I have read multipe messages here from people upgrading from 5.0 to 5.1,
presumably using "yum update" to do the deed.
When I do "yum update" on my (I think) fully updated Centos 5 system I get no updates.
Am I just being impatient (i.e., the updates haven't yet been pushed out) or am I
somehow missing them?
Thanks!

about ulimit -n 1M
Hi,
I noticed that the glusterfs client tries to set ulimit -n to 1M. When
I run booster with non-privileged user, the following line appears
several times in the log file:

WARNING: Failed to set 'ulimit -n 1M': Operation not permitted
When I run it with root, there's no such complaint even though

How can you capture the input and output of a serial port in wine
I'm curious about this. I'm trying to reverse-engineer a really neato-device that hooks up to the serial port and has Windows software. I've figured out the protocol the device sends; I'm just not sure how the device is initialized. So I'd love to capture the Windows software doing the dirty deed.. and WINE is IMHO just the tool. So, question is:
How do you capture serial

Confirmation of resource completeness.
Hi all,
I need to have some way of confirming that all manifests have run against
as chosen group of hosts. We are just about to use puppet to perform post
build configuration on nearly 200 machines and one final sanity check
requirement from the bosses is that we have an easy way of seeing that
puppet has done the deed on each server.
I have googled, read what I can find on the puppet web
