password authentication stops but can be restarted
I have several Sun Solaris systems that share directories via SAMBA. After
some period (I think 30 days, which the password expiration period) the
authentication stops with the following messages (all names changed to protect
the guilty):

migrating samba shares to a netapp filer?
Hello,
I'll soon have to migrate our samba shares to a netapp filer (not my
decision).
Currently the shares are on an xfs filesystem and served by samba 3.5.2,
which is also the domain controller (a role that it will maintain, only
the shares are being transferred) and sama/unix users are in ldap. The
filer is in the domain and uses ldap to map user ids and that seems to work.
Samba maps the

root ownership on some profile files cause login errors
Here's another question related to how to use masks --
In my PDC area I specify:
logon path = \\netapp\profiles\%u
This puts server-based (roaming) profiles on my Network Appliance (which
itself is an SMB/PDC client).
A previous admin here left this commented section:
#[profiles]
# path = /var/lib/samba/profiles # path = /netapp/profiles ???

samba,robocopy and gpfs problem
Hi all,
I am trying to do a robocopy from a windows box going from a netapp to a
samba box with a gpfs back end. When doing the robocopy it fails with
error 282 which states " "The mounted file system does not support
extended attributes". I have found that if you create the destination
directory first then issue the robocopy that the copy goes without a
hitch.

Bulk copy of files with owner info using Robocopy fails with error
Hello,
I'm trying to take a Samba-integrated file storage appliance with ZFS as the underlying file system (Nas4Free, in its latest incarnation, to be specific) into use and have gotten it Active Directory integrated just fine, and created shares on it. I can set the owner of the share to the domain Administrator, and I can alter ownership information from a Windows box just fine. ACL's

Permissions issue on domain member server (samba as an appliance)
Hi,
We have a rat's nest of windows servers all sharing little bits of
storage which I'm trying to consolidate on one biggish linux server. I've
install a fresh Ubuntu 22.04 and samba 4.15 that comes standard. I've also
joined the domain using autorid as the backend and users are getting UID
and GIDs correctly as evidenced by wbinfo -i USER and id USER. I've also

Postfix master-slave configuration howto
Hi guys.
I have mail loop problem. I have master server (CentOS 5.x) for domain
in question (lets call it *domainX.com* ). I used virtualmin to set it
up for that and several other domains. It is Bind SOA for the domain and
Postfix server. I will call this server *soa.domainX.com*
Now, I have added internal CentOS 6.x server to the company owner of the
domain. I have given it hostname

Permissions issue on domain member server (samba as an appliance)
These are my notes. I?d rather use xattr and configure shares from windows.
http://samba.bigbird.es/doku.php?id=samba:configuring-shares
Also, have you assigned privileges ?
http://samba.bigbird.es/doku.php?id=samba:server-privileges
Using autorid as the idmap backend has some limitations. I recommend using rid.
Regards.

Can a Samba server join multiple NT domain?
Hi,
Say if there are DomainX and DomainY, both are not in trusted
relationship. Can a Samba server join both DomainX and DomainY?
I can't find any related information on Internet. Your help would be
appreciated.
Thanks!

Permissions issue on domain member server (samba as an appliance)
OK I found an account with RID 500 but it has another username. I
inherited this AD from 15+ years ago. Everything looks fine, all the
computer management stuff works and I can manipulate permissions and
security BUT running robocopy still gives "Error 1314 Copying N

held by the client". I just noticed it does

Permissions issue on domain member server (samba as an appliance)
Hey Rowland,
Hmmm. I may have misunderstood. I don't believe it explicitly said to do
that but I took it as that. Should I create a local Administrator account
instead?
Thanks,
Greg

NetApp NFS vs. ZFS and NFS for Maildir
Hi,
I'm evaluating to switch from NetApp to a ZFS appliance (like Qsan). Our
setup is Dovecot, Maildir for email storage and NFS to share mailboxes
(more than 30k users) across POP/IMAP and MX servers.
NetApp NFS works fine also under high load but have some limitation for
inode numbers per Volume and is expensive (but recently their prices
have dropped).
ZFS, I read, suggest to create

Is it okay to use an NFS-mounted path in the [profiles] path statement?
2.
How do I make sure that owner & permissions don't get set to root on
certain profile files when the user profile is migrated to the PDC
'logon path' area?

permissions not transferred using robocopy, xxcopy, net share migrate shares
Hello:
I've been working for a few days on getting a FreeBSD 5.3 server up and
running as a samba data backup server.
My goal is to schedule periodic backups of our file server. After reading
recommendations (e.g. by Mr. Terpstra) I've focused my attempts aroung
robocopy, xxcopy, net rpc share migrate shares.
However, I'm running into stumbling blocks that seem to involve a problem

Copying (Samba -> WinXP SP2) MATLAB generated .jpg files very slow.
Greetings,
This is a interesting problem. One of our researchers uses MATLAB to
generate jpg files as part of his vision research. When he copies these
files from the file server, it is very slow. I tried 3.0.28a and I see the
same problem as we have with 3.0.28.
Here are some interesting stats.
1) MATLAB generated files:
command: robocopy Y:\23_1 C:\23_1 /e

NetApp Toaster w/ SMBCLIENT
The problem you describe below is fixed in Data NOTAP 5.3x. If you're on an
older version, you might want to upgrade.
There's another issue, though. The fix for which should be in the next
release of Data ONTAP, which isn't far off (sorry for being vague).
