Samba 3.0.20, Active Directory, Debian: Username ... is invalid on this system
Hello List,
I have a strange problem:
I have successfully added my debian system to the local active directory
domain. Winbind works and gives me Users, Groups, and relations when I call
wbinfo. However, Users cannot connect to a share I prepared.
It makes no difference if there is no "valid user = " entry, or if I put an
correct entry with my test user.
All I get in log.winbindd is:

Automatically Join Domain after Reboot
FC4 Samba 3 joining Windows 2003 Domain.
I have to manually join the Domain after rebooting. If I set samba to
start when booting it doesn't join the domain. I have to smb stop, net
join ..., smb start from the command line and then it will join the
domain and work fine. Is there something in the smb.conf that I can set
to join the domain when smb starts?
Thanks,
Tommy

maximum share size?
Hello List,
We are having a NAS here with 4 TB (sic!) disc space and a samba server
as a file server (or better: as one of the file servers). Now the
vendor tells us: with samba you can't share more than 2 TB of that.
This is not enough.
Is that a restriction of Samba, Linux or of the vendor's system?
I never encountered this restriction...
Please help!

Author wanted for Dovecot article in Linux Magazine (Germany)
Hi list,
I am an editor at the German Linux Magazine and I am searching for an author or input on Dovecot,
its advantages and especially the recent features. I had organized some authors, but unfortunately
they don't have time right now. :-) Nevertheless I heard many positive comments on Dovecot.
I can write or help writing the article, but I would love to have some input from an

pam_winbind failure -- what did I do wrong?
Hello List,
I have successfully integrated samba 3 to ADS Domain, and now i want to
allow domain-users to access services on my linux box. For testing i
chose /etc/pam.d/login and tried to allow ADS Users access to the
console. But i always get the following errors:

samba 3.0, winbind is not updating userlist - only on restart
Hello List,
I have successfuly brought samba 3.0 on SuSE (8.1,8.2,9.0) to work
together with an Active Directory Server. I have (also successfully)
enabled squid to use winbind for authentication for internet access.
(I need winbind, because only members of a certain AD Group are allowed
to access the internet.)
Kerberos is running fine.
My Problem is:
After I add a new user to the AD:

Hello List,
has anybody got pam_winbind get to work under SuSE 9.0?
I try to set up a pam.d file to enable users auth'd against winbind to
access my mail server. I am testing with console login or ssd files at
the moment. I found some docs at samba.org (esp the winbind section),
but that didn#t work.
I used to manage with older versions, but i can't figure out what went

Kerberos Tickets renewal
Hello List,
I have successfully integrated samba to an Active Directory Domain, and
it is authenticating against the ADS, but only while the Kerberos
ticket is valid. After that period it seems to take only the user/group
list from its (winbind) cache.
By now i can get a kerberos ticket with "kinit Administrator" or any
other username that has administrative rights on ADS and all is

samba 3, ADS, kerberos, keytab problem - Additional pre-authentication required
Hello List,
I am (unsuccessfully) trying to automatically get a valid kerberos

- a suse linux 9.0 router with samba3.0.2.rc.1 and heimdal 0.6.-67.
- I am able to join the domain and get a valid ticket through kinit, if
I enter the Administrator's password or the

ADS mode - differences between W2K and 2003?
I'm having a bizarre problem doing authentication via winbind against a
Windows 2003 server.
Aside from changing the hostname information, etc. as appropriate for
krb5.conf and smb.conf, the configuration I'm using is one that I copied from
another server that is successfully authenticating against ads.
The two systems I'm having trouble with are running Suse Linux Enterprise

Hi guys;
I''m sure you are all bored of hearing the same story over and over...
but here it comes again. :) Yep, tomorrow I''m getting another ADSL

IMAP-Proxy and LDAP?
I am doing some research on Dovecots IMAP-Proxy features mentioned in
<http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/ImapProxy> and
<http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy>.
The docs only mention SQL as backend to hold required data. Is it also
possible to use LDAP?
TIA,

Linux, Samba and OS X 10.2
Hi,
I have a Linux machine as Samba Fileserver, authentication through
NT PDC, lots of W2K, NT and XP clients and some MAC clients running
under OS X 10.2.
People share documents on that server and for the M$ clients, it
works.
The OS X clients can read but not write.
The error messages are directory related (permission), and sometimes
we get the statement 'disk full'. But there are

Setting individual SSL/TLS settings with OpenLDAP
I am using OpenLDAP to read Dovecot User settings and want to use TLS for
user_attrs and pass_attrs queries.
So I set "tls = yes" and it kept failing until I told the OpenLDAP ldap client
in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf where the CA certificate can be found.
So far so good. Now just in case... could I tell dovecot to read the OpenLDAP
client settings from a non default configuration file e.g.

Unsuccessful POP sessions on dovecot-1.0.3-13_60
A Client runs a RAS network. Users access mailboxes using Outlook Express.
The server runs dovecot-1.0.3-13_60.
Almost a week ago users began to report that they can't retrieve their mail.
The session starts, they seem to retrieve messages, but then the client
reports a problem and the session is terminated.
Here's what I have in the log:

Calculate Index size for harddisk sizing
I need to get a hand on the 'usual size of an index' to do some hard disk
sizing. Is that possible at all? I know their size depends a lot on what the
clients index.
Those clients will mostly be Outlook and Thunderbird and they will be doing
more POP than IMAP if that helps to bring it down to some estimation.
TIA,

Out of the box: Thank you!
I've just enabled IMAP quota support on a LDAP userbase in about an hour.
In this hour I read the Dovecot documentation on quota support, extended the
customers LDAP schema, added a "mailQuota"-attribute and a value to all users,
enabled the plugin in dovecot.conf, added the attribute query in
dovecot-ldap.conf, reloaded the system and tested the functionality and ...
everything

Howto set mail_location for system users over LDAP?
In parallel to /etc/passwd I do have my system users in LDAP. I want to store
their messages in /srv/mail/state-of-mind/<username>.
Dovecot has been configured to retrieve the extra field mail to override the
mail_location setting. I can see in the log it retrieves the correct
information as long as I run Dovecot deliver as Postfix service 'dovecot' as

Konica Printer: Scan to File (Samba SMB share) fails
I am trying to let a Konica-Minolta Copy-Scanner-Printer store scanned stuff
to a file.
It works at once, if I let it send the file to a SMB share provided by a W2K
workstation that is part of a (Samba) domain.
It doesn't work, if I want it to store the messages on a share provided by the
Samba server.
So far I have verified that the user the scanner runs under is allowed to
mount the share
