RESOLVED: RE: compile time questions
Turns out it was a very simple fix - the perms on my dfsroot directories
were a tad too tight. Setting debug level to 5 and wading through the
logs showed me the answer.
Cheers,
Chris

XP Clients, Netbios aliases and msdfs
Greetings list,
I've looked high and low, and cannot find an instance of this
particular situation, and thought I might try leveraging the power of
the collective hive mind of the user community to solve this problem.
My setup is likely not at all common. I've created a bunch of
netbios aliases on a single linux box. Each alias has the same name as a
particular windows group, like hr

UTMP logging in Samba 3.0.1 does not have hostnames
Hi,
I was testing Samba 3.0.1 as a logon server on a Solaris 9 Sparc box.
I compiled Samba using gcc 3.3 with the following options:
configure --prefix=/local/samba-3.0.1 --enable-static --with-nis
--with-quotas --with-syslog --with-msdfs --with-utmp
I set utmp = yes in the smb.conf file
The samba server does create login entries but minus the hostname
entries. The following

Samba 2.2.8a with Solaris 8 & NIS
All,
The basic info is that I'm running Samba 2.2.8a on a Solaris 8 machine
with NIS. The hostname is altair and is a NIS slave. As a standard
practice every employee get's a NIS account and altair is their samba
home. NIS is set to compatibility mode in /etc/nsswitch.conf. Samba
security is set to server. It appears that for users to map to their
samba share, we need to have an

DFS not working from XP
Hi,
I'm am trying to configure our samba server to use dfs. It authenticates
against active directory but it gets the uid mappings from nis via the
local
nsswitch. I think I have configured dfs ok as smbclient[1] seems to work ok
with my minimal config[2]. However I can't access it from Windows XP[3],
I get

File versioning with Samba (on a Linux filesystem)?
Apologies if this question is answered somewhere obvious. I just spent a
couple of hours surfing around trying to find an answer.
I'd like to provide windows clients with access to files via samba and have
samba (or other) do file versioning. In the case that a user happens to
delete a file or we want to return to an earlier version, that should be
possible.
Is there a standard solution for

Password change problems
Dear Sir
I?m terribly confused about one problem in our environment. We have one
NIS+SAMBA environment, running in E450 with Solaris 7. Apparently, after
one system patch application, the password change is not working. Please
look this:
1) In the server, with root account:
# passwd user_test
New password:
Re-enter new password:
NIS passwd/attributes changed on server

Samba-3.0 and the --with-msdfs compile flag
Hi all,
First, I'm no longer on the list, so please CC me if you reply to the group. I've hunted around, but I cannot find anything about this. The --with-msdfs compile flag is not present in ./configure --help. Is dfs built now by default? OR - is it no longer supported?
Thanks,

MSDFS redirection WinXP SP2
I am currently having problems accesing our samba msdfs shares from
Windows XP SP2, Windows 2000 and WinXP SP1 seem unaffected. I have
attached the smb.conf and the exports files that define the shares.
Running ethereal on the different clients seems to point to the fact
that XP SP2 no longer seems to be using the netbios-ssn (139) port. for
GET_DFS_REFERRAL instead its using microsoft-ds

Extremely slow Samba3 performance with ArcView/WinXP
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi!
I have a user who is running a Samba server to store data
files for his ArcView 3.3 application. Client operating
system is Windows XP professional.
With Samba2 (2.2.8a) this was working quite fine, it usually
took less than a few seconds to load and render one of the
GIS presentations with ArcView.
We then did an upgrade to Samba3 (3.0.20b)

But we have a group of people which use windows 2000 and msoffice 2000.
They use only word with an addon which translates texts (these people are
translators).

problem with Too many open files
Hi Samba community,
Last year we upgraded from version 3.0.10 to 3.0.20b and at the same
time
switch from NT-domain controller membership to AD membership. After this
upgrade we began to experience that drives sometimes were not mapped.
We saw this both on our Citrix servers and on our XP PCs.
A couple of weeks back we then moved to 3.0.21b in the hope that this
misbehaviour would
