tripplite_usb interrupt errs
I keep getting this kind of stuff in /var/log/messages Jan 18 17:45:03 bulldog tripplite_usb[9979]: libusb_get_interrupt() returned -110 instead of 8 Should I be worried about it? upsc seems to work fine... I tried building the 2.0.5 but none of the included spec files seemed to work with opensuse 10.2 and adapting their 2.0.4 spec file didn't seem to work out well either. Building from

SNMP/management front-ends
Hi, I've been using TrippLite's PowerAlert software with my RM2200XL2U rack system and my APC BackUPS desktop systems. Unfortunately it doesn't work with openSUSE 10.2 (the software has problems with the serial port and UPS interfaces on openSUSE 10.2), so I've been looking at other options. I see that openSUSE 10.2 includes NUT, and it appears to work with my TrippLite UPS via

question on user auth
Is user authentication ever needed for just querying variables? My cacti script seems to be cooked, and I'm just wondering if I need to mess with username/password stuff. Not hard but if it's not needed then why bother... Thanks -- Eric A. Hall http://www.ehsco.com/ Internet Core Protocols http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/coreprot/

USRMGR group problems
I'm having some odd problems with USRMGR and Samba group accounts. USRMGR seems to work fine for user accounts, and it also correctly displays the list of group objects (these are all stored in LDAP btw). This can be seen in http://www.ehsco.com/misc/samba/umgr-main.gif Two of the groups can be managed while the other two cannot. For example, http://www.ehsco.com/misc/samba/umgr-admins.gif

policies primer posted
After trying to get all the policy stuff nailed down I figured I'd save others the trouble, so I wrote up a primer and posted it on my site at http://www.ehsco.com/reading/20051031.html Hoepfully that will save others some trouble -- Eric A. roll-yer-own ldapadd operations for scipt options?
I'm currently using the suse ldapsmb utility for all the script operations, but I want to do some custom script work for creating user and machine accounts. For example, I want to manipulate the default object classes and directory placement for new machines--putting them into ou=Devices instead of ou=Users, and giving them the parent objectClasses of account and ipHost [for NIS and DHCP

does PXE have a BIOS device addr?
I noticed in isolinux that I could use -1 to specify the last boot device, which is my PXE here (I've got it setup to get called after nothing else works). I'm wondering, is there a standard address reference for PXE? Like, floppies are usually addressed as 0x00 and first HD is usually addressed as 0x80, is there a standard for PXE? It'd be great to have a reliable "boot from

what's the best filesystem
Curious what folks think the best choice of filesystem is, specifically when used for Samba and regular Unix users (SMB+NFS access). I'm using Reiser now but its slow and doesn't work good XP attributes. I've also used XFS (a couple of years ago) and liked it but had some troubles with cross-platform Unix and the extended ACLs. What's the preference today? Thanks -- Eric A.

suggestions for eventlog feature
Also been playing with the event logging stuff, and it's really nice in conjunction with the svcctl feature. It's kind of weird on implementation though. Couple of thoughts here. First, the eventlog daemon should have a command-line switch to read in single-line logfiles directly. Right now there is a three-stage conversion process where single-line text has to be converted to multi-line

fault report
I just moved a server to another machine, and everything seems to be working. But when I tried to browse the users and groups with the NT User Manager for Domains tool I got errors. This showed up in log.smbd: [2006/12/29 23:14:28, 0] lib/fault.c:fault_report(42) INTERNAL ERROR: Signal 6 in pid 23302 (3.0.23d-6-1083-SUSE-SL10.2) Please read the Trouble-Shooting section of the Samba3-HOWTO

smbpasswd and machine accounts
I'm using samba-3.0.23d-19 on openSUSE 10.2 with an LDAP PDC arrangement I'm trying to sort out some problems with adding a trust relationship. Specifically, smbpasswd is failing when I try to create/modify the domain account. Further investigation shows that it is also failing to modify workstation accounts. However it is able to modify user accounts fine. The big difference here seems

winbind / trust questions and issues
I have two domains, one called CORP (which is 2003 AD) and the other is called LABS (which is running Samba 3.5.4-5.1.2). I have established bi-directional trust between them and most of the basic tests show apparent success. However there are a couple of issues left that I am trying to chase down. First issue is that I would like to filter out the local (LABS) users and groups in winbind if

Mapping all members of an AD group to a single unix username?
Hello all I've tried various permutations in the smbusers file ( referenced by username map ), to get all members of a Windows AD group to be able to authenticate to a Samba Share, mainly along the lines of DOMAIN\GroupName, but I can't figure out a way to get this to work. What I need is for any member of the DOMAIN\SambaGroup to authenticate to the Samba server as the unix user

"Wbinfo -u" get user account sucessfully but "getent passwd" fails
Hi everybody, I got a problem here with my Samba ADS member server. It functions as a file server and works for a long time. A few weeks ago our Active Directory domain controller failed due to power outage. We fixed it and now an employee reports that he could not use the samba file server any more. I restarted samba service and did the following testing: 1) getent passwd <thisUser>

POLEDIT replacement?
I've been reading about policies and the documentation says to grab poledit.exe from the NT SP6a file. There are many policy settings that are not available via this tool. Isn't there something newer that could be used to create the .pol file needed by samba to implement policies? Or will this only be available with samba4?

Testing subnets with samba[Scanned]
OK before i start, this was something i was just testing while everyone was in training this afternoon. I have never had to deal with subnets before as we only have a few users, but decided to do a little bit of messing around to gain some experience. Basically we have one server (mandriva 2006) running samba, it has two 4 port ethernet cards in it but only utilitising one port from each card.
