HOW TO: Migrating users' locally-stored profiles from one domain or workgroup to a new domain
Migrating Users Profiles When Changing Domain Affiliation: A Primer
I. Introduction
NOTE: This applies to Windows NT-based systems with locally-stored user
profiles. Windows 9x and Me do not manage user profiles in the same way.
Quite often we find the need to change a workstation's affiliation,
either from a workgroup (that is, the workstation is not in a domain
environment) to a domain,

Short delay when logging in an XP client to a Samba PDC
Hello everyone,
I'm using Samba 3.0.30 as PDC in my home-LAN, the clients are all XP Pro SP2.
Everything is working as it should, although I notice an annoying and quite
random login delay of 1-5 seconds for all user-machine combinations. The log
lines below (log-level 2) are for example what I got about an hour ago:
[2009/03/20 18:43:45, 3] smbd/open.c:open_file(240)

Python Hivex Assertion Failed
Good afternoon,
I am working with the hivex python bindings and having trouble with an
assertion failure.
The code I run is based on the blog post from 11/28/10 and is:
import hivex
h = hivex.Hivex("ntuser.dat")
r = h.root()
key = h.node_get_child(r)
The assert failure happens when I call any of the "node" functions,
even "node_name()".
The error message I get

Still mandatory profiles, every user same profile
Hi there,
again me, again similar question.
First of all, what is it, what I'd like to have:
1.) Every user in my System should use the same profile. In dsa.msc I
gave every user as profile-path \\samba4\profiles\stud
2.) The users should not be able to change anything in that profile (I
think changing ntuser.dat to ntuser.man should do the job, proposed i
got step one managed ;) )

who to copy a registry file between users?
Hi,
I wounder if someone else had this same problem that I have, and solved it.
So here it goes...
I have 15 WinXP Pro workstations, on a Domain controlled by a Samba 2.2.8.
The domain has 36 users, each with an independent roaming profile, on the
PDC.
Every machine have Adobe Premiere installed. However Premiere's
configuration is saved on each user's registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive.

roaming profile corruption with windows xp client and samba PDC
Hi,
I have roaming profile issue on my SAMBA PDC with an LDAP backend
running on FreeBSD 6.3. It seems that randomly, user's profile get
"corrupted" on windows XP. When that happens, the user log in as usual
(%userprofile% variable is set and all the share are properly
connected) but he gets a default desktop configuration (default

%LOGONSERVER% variable in netlogon/Default User folder redirection
Hi,
(This is taken form here :
http://samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/happy.html#redirfold )
I'm using folder redirection so I have a NTUSER.DAT file in the
"netlogon" directory on the logon server (the primary domain controler),
which I edited with regedit to set up some folders so that they point to
the logon server by using the %LOGONSERVER% variable, and it seems it

Windows 7 v. Samba: why is default network profile in 'NETLOGON/Default User.v2' not used?
Setup:
- Samba 3.5.6 (Debian Stable release, amd64);
- Testing Windows 7 client behaviour, specifically with regard to users
who don't yet have profiles.
The Windows docs state that a domain logon for a new user will cause the
default network profile to be used if available, if not then a default
local profile is used instead. The location for the default network
profile is

I think the only way to accomplish this correctly is to copy the user
profile to the Default User profile. Then, delete all of the profiles on
each machine and on the servers and have them rebuilt when the users log

User can only login as admin, group policy fails the logon otherwise
I have a Samba 3.5 server that services seven Windows 7 computers. When
the setup was originally installed, all workstations were independent
systems and so all users had local administrative privilege. I have
removed admin rights from all users but one. This user has a problem.
We'll call the user 'dmc' though that isn't his real username.
In any event, dmc is a member of the

ntuser.dat
What are the implications of locking the ntuser.dat file on the user's
server profile? That is, if I make the ntuser.dat file read-only, what
affects will that have on the client?

Netlogon
Hi,
I've just configure my Samba 3.0.7 as a PDC with an LDAP-based backend. Everthing seems fine except that my logon.bat is unable to execute when my users login to their XP. If I manually run //bilbo/netlogon/logon.bat on XP, the script will run without any problems. Is this purely a samba problem or it is due to my ldap configuration? Do I need to include ntconfig.POL in the netlogon

Samba 4.2.14 Group Policy (GPO) sync error
Hai,
Ive tested the following, i use static and dhcp ip here.
Everything on static ip works perfect on win7 and win10.
And at the domain join the a and ptr is created automaticly.
GPO works fine for both.
Dhcp ip.
Win 7 works fine, AD join A and PTR is created and updated when the ip is changes. GPO works fine.
Win 10 works, AD join A and PTR is created and but not updated when the ip is

Roaming profiles not roamin :(
Hello folks!
I have a "small" problem configuring samba-3.0.9 (on Debian, if that
matters). My samba server acts like primary domain controller, and my
users can log to the domain. But, their profiles are not roaming (yes,
those users have roaming profile selected on every workstation, that's
not it). That is - they are not created on samba machine, but instead,
on every workstation

'profiles' command with WinXP Profiles
Hi all,
I have gotten the 'profiles' command to work for NT and Win2K profiles very
well. In Windows XP, I am able to change the 'owner' but not the 'group'
SID. It gives no errors but it just doesn't change them. A snippet of the
profile in question is below:
furnsrv:/data/samba/profiles/jon # profiles NTUSER.DAT |grep S-1-5
Owner SID: S-1-5-32-544

Problem with Dovecot after upgrade to Debian 7.0 (stable)
Dear all,
few days ago I updated Debian to the latest stable and since then
Dovecot is not working. I use Dovecot as LDA for Postfix and also for
IMAP access. Also I used SASL and everything was ok before update. After
I updated to Dovecot 2.1.7 (it used to be 1.x before) it looks like that
e-mail delever is working but I can not configure IMAP access to work.
