Creating a PDC
I am working my way through "Samba-3 by Example". I have created all the
simple samba servers with ease as I have done them in the past with
trial and error... this book makes it easy now.
I'm stuck.
While on page 118 it says to not go further without validating.
Well, The server is there and when browsing the network I can see the
Samba server. When I try to connect it wants

Finding the UID of samba users
Hi Folks:
I am in the process of moving all of our users over to our new Samba
File server which runs FC3.
In order to properly secure the home folders, I need to chown them to
the UID of the individual user, and chgrp them to the domain users
group. I know the GID for the domain users, so no problem there. Is
there a way to find a list of the UID for all the users.
I know that I can do it

samba with NTLM *and* kerberos authentication
We have an existing samba server with many userids, using NTLM
authentication (stored in OpenLDAP). We would like to add many other
userids, which will authenticate against an existing MIT kerberos server.
Each of our customers will have either an NTLM-based userid/password, or
a kerberos-based userid/password, but never both.
We would like both kinds of userids to work with the same samba

oplocks, QuickBooks (Samba 3)
Hi there,
Can somebody please explain to me why Samba 3 requires 'oplocks = no' on
shares for programs like Quickbooks to operate properly with multiple
users, where Samba 2 didn't?
Without this option, Quickbooks will complain about file corruption when
a second user tries to open a file.
This option, however, makes the particular share that the option is
present in _very_ slow

Problem Connecting to Samba-OpenLDAP PDC
I have made some changes to try and get the PDC working and now I am
down to one thing where I believe the problem lies. All such
documents on the setup show that the addition of users to the PDC
should be added to passwd as well as LDAP but for my system that is
not the case. I am running the listed software:
Fedora Core 4
OpenLDAP 2.2.23
Samba 3.0.14a
This is what currently happens when I

what is the SID of the domain administrator?
Does the domain administrator SID always end with -1000?
I.e., if the SID for the domain is:
S-1-2-33-4444444444-555555555-6666666666
does this mean that the domain administrator's SID would be:
S-1-2-33-4444444444-555555555-6666666666-1000
?
How can I get the SID number for any given user?

Samba as a domain controller for Linux workstations?
I was wondering, if it's possible to set up Samba as a sort of a domain
controller for Linux workstations?
I'm thinking of benefits like roaming profiles, managing printers etc.
Or perhaps for Linux there are better choices than Samba, when it comes
to the office / school use (many users, many classrooms, many
workstations etc.)?

two way synchronization with rsync?
I have two offices in one city; employees work in both of them (once in
office A, the next or an hour later in office B etc.).
They would like to have the same profile (i.e., if they log off in
office A, they would like to have their documents, Desktop, emails etc.
in the profile in the office B when they arrive there an hour later).
Is it possible with rsync to construct such a "two way

Hi,
This is a little off-topic,but if someone has any info, it could help me
a LOT!,
I am building an asterisk pbx (1.0.9) on an IBM x306 SCSI machine,my
problem is that the BIOS assigns the same IRQ to the SCSI controller,
and the TDM400P, i have tried several options of making the bios change
the IRQ, but it will always move them together, anyone with some info
about my options ?

"dos filemode" parameter ineffective?
According to the smb.conf man page, the "dos filemode" parameter will allow a user who is not the owner of a file to affect permissions changes on a file or folder provided he has write access to that object. This does not appear to be the case. Users with write access via user or group ACEs receive an "Access denied" error when attempting to make ACL changes via windows,

wpkg for Samba
Hello List,
This is very much so Samba related but I'm sure there are several
people here this would relate to. wpkg is a nice add on to Samba that
allows you to mass install Windows software to Windows clients machines
as they log onto a Samba server.
Today's offerings.
I have made a simple binary rpm that installs all of the needed files
for both server and client. Thought this may

NTConfig.POL not working for Win 2000 (for XP working fine)?
I'm just exploring the Profile Editor, described on
http://www.pcc-services.com/custom_poledit.html - and policies saved to
NTConfig.pol file and copied to the netlogon share work great for
Windows XP machines.
However, with Windows 2000, they don't work at all. Winh XP machines -
policies are applied.
I see in Samba logs that the NTConfig.pol is copied from the server to
